I’d compare the Princeton “Essential Goethe” version with the old Carlyle translation and see which you like best. Carlyle has a unique style and some people don’t like his translation. I think it’s great though. Carlyle and Goethe knew each other, and Carlyle loved the frick out of Goethe and it really shows, so if I were to pick I’d go with Carlyle.

sorry, but this meme has to stop. this board is too centered around burger or britbong literature.
and some people here behave like they have to defend a book as the highest form of human creativity, after reading their first foreign book.
many such cases here. for example Kafka gets shilled here just because most burgers read Die Verwandlung or soemthing and get their brains busted
I’m only saying Wilhem is great and better than Faust. I’d love to hear recommendations from you though

>after Lord Bristol confronted him with the social damage caused by his Werther, Goethe replied "How many thousands of victims are slaughtered for the English trading system? why shouldn't I have the right to consecrate some victims to my system?"

I read Egmont this past week and really liked it. I don’t have much to add except that I think Goethe as a man, as a whole, over shadows any individual work. He is a prime example of the whole being better than the sum of the parts
I agree, that is terrible, but also look at that powerful craftsman's thumb... The subtle thickness of it
Mogs my scribe's thumb, I concur.
They really did Goethe dirty with that cover.
Definitely some boomer Anglo who was seething about having to publish a German
Why? It pretty much sums up the book.
when young werther expressed his sorrows, I felt that
it's good. Werther if a homosexual though
Quite fit for a man who kills himself because of a woman.
NO NO NO NOOOOOOOO HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN GOETHEBROS AND WERTHERSISSIES.... WE GOT TOO wienerY.. MOMMY HELP MEEEEEEEEE AHHHHHHH
didnt read a single pixel. blocked, goodbye gay Black person from outer space
Werther? more like..... WORTHLESS!
/thread
hello, did anyone like my joke?
I did, good job
Fits the tone of Werther, tbh
Read Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship for actual Goethe
Avoid everything else
>not readinf Faust
you might as well just have a nice day
Faust would be his best work if Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship didn’t exist. unironically blows Faust out of the water.
t. schopenhauer
Any particular translation you'd recommend?

Very nice thumb.
>the "sorrows" of young werther: not getting pussy from some prostitute
Unironically really suits the novel. Terrible novel by the way, really embarrassing and juvenile.
