>get that car itch again after happening upon some auctions on motortrend
>go looking for a silvia s13
>find one, its beautiful
>not turbo, auto, Q's, but low mileage, totally stock, and has the little spoiler
>pretty expensive, probably would end up costing me $25k at the end of it all
>but GOD is she pretty
what do I do? I'm also about to go back to school and need a new computer as well, but if I wait, it feels like all of them will be picked off/destroyed by the time I go looking again, not to mention the prices will probably just go up even more. I'm not one of those people that would rice it out either, would just like to have it as a daily/summer driver, maybe convert it to manual at a later point in time. I have enough money saved up, but it feels like this is my last shot to get something like this.

do I jump on it?

I'm not familiar with US prices but I'd imagine you could get a clean late-model V8 Camaro, Challenger or a Mustang for that price. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if you could score a C6 Vette for that kind of money.
25k for old n/a 4banger Nissan is way too much.

I do know it's a crazy number, but I'm not really sure what to do at this point. And that's the price after the shipment, fees, and such, not for what it's listed for.

The next two I'd most want are a 88-93 supra or a capuccino, at least the final one would be somewhat cheap.

I don't mean to talk shit, everyone has their preferences on cars and so on but 25k for old Nissan? 4banger n/a automatic?
You would be paying crazy premium for just the styling of the car really. There's better handling, more powerful, more luxurious, more practical, more basically everything cars in the market for the same price. Hopefully most of the homies here don't think car purchases solely on a rational level, but there has to be some bit of logical thinking in the mix in my opinion. Unless you really just have enough money that quarter of a 100k is nothing but chump change, I'd say pass on it.

I don't give a shit what it's the price after, it's just a fricking car. And one you'll probably never find parts for when you need it and it'll spend all it's time not leaving the garage while you talk about minor novelties about it to try to stave off putting a gun in your mouth because you dropped 25k on a car instead of 7 or 8 and dropping the rest into modding it.

          Anonymous

I don't want to mod it though, only thing I'd want to do is change it to manual one of these days.

Fact of the matter is you've missed the boat on these cars, if you want in now you are going to be paying a huge premium to do so.
That said if it's something you are really wanting it would probably be worth it because you'll enjoy having it around, it'll probably make you happy just looking at it when you can't get it out to drive.
Also writeups on manual conversions are everywhere for these cars

          >it would probably be worth it because you'll enjoy having it around, it'll probably make you happy just looking at it when you can't get it out to drive
Basically. And that's good to hear, zilvia and such should probably help me out, just gotta do the research.

That price seems sorta crazy, feels like even a manual K in similar condition would be less than that.

it's what I came here to get a gauge for, if a price like that is too high. I do agree that it's pricey, looked at quite a few other sold auctions that are much lower, but yeah.

    >mustang GT

Stupid price, but goddamn do these cars look very nice when stock. Worst car to rice out, it completely loses its character. I miss cars that had this modest, innocent look. Something reasonable and classy, but not gaudy or flashy, not boyracer or edgy.

I agree completely, that's why I'd want something stock. All it really needs is a swap out to the square headlights and it's golden.

Understood. Thanks for talking some sense into me. I hope I'll be able to grab one at a more sensible price later but.. who knows if that'll happen. Just have to be vigilant.

This is true. No offense to anon, he's more than right, but my heart is stupid and has more than complete control of my head.

Anon if you have 25k to drop just lurk some local importer pages. Duncan importers is a pretty large group and the have a ton of stock.
I was in the market for old Toyotas and the gentleman I spoke to actually steered me away from centuries because they're not easy to get parts for in the US. Something like a z20 soarer (my personal fave) is a lot different because the usdm mk3 supra is basically the same car. On that topic, you have to be aware you're potentially buying a car 3 decades removed from any aftermarket or factory support, except now you have to find the parts for it on the other side of the planet in a country with an entire different language and script. In that case it's good to consider cars with a USDM counterpart.
Just some things to be aware of.

This is true, but don't s13's and their brethren have quite the large aftermarket scene? And many parts from the 180sx/240sx group are pretty interchangeable. Obviously I'll get much better prices if I go through the nips, but there's a good amount of stuff in English-speaking places.

Prices will assuredly go up until gen X and millennials buying them up all die, like with the boomers. Even if the economy crashes these cars will be valued against everything else the same as before. If you're going to buy, the time is now, just make sure you pick the right car

And if Mecum and Barret-Jackson are anything to sneeze at, the boomers are still very much alive, although some of them were going for much less than I thought they would.

Have you seen how much those brick headlights go for now days? I remember waaay back in the early 2000s the bricks were the preferred option on the s13. After 30yrs they’re getting harder to find. I’d say there’s good reason why they’ve been swapped for projectors before sale.

bout a grand for a pair, the projectors are usually much cheaper

it's why im keeping mine stock outside, mods inside. am slowly building up parts for manual conversion, best thing is it's all bolt in, zero cutting or welding to the chassis needed due to foreign models getting manuals.
not an s13, but i just love the conservative styling. Every car now has to look sporty, aggressive, A N G E R Y with rubber band tyres.

If you're 100% sure that the prices will go up (taking into account the absolute shitshow the world is going through), buying it makes sense. Enjoy it for a while, look after it, and then move it to break even or perhaps for a small profit. As long as a car is in good shape and has done all its depreciation, it's almost impossible to lose money unless you drive it backwards into a hedge.

I wish I had a crystal ball, but unless someone gives me real reasons otherwise, I don't see them coming back down, they're only becoming rarer and more sought after over time. Those damn supply-demand curves.

        >I wish I had a crystal ball
Predictions within reason and taking into account market trends, of course. You don't even have to be certain it's going to appreciate, you just need to be reasonably confident prices won't plummet, or that the market is so minuscule you'll have to take a massive loss if you want to sell it down the line.
