Found picrel at a good price, might buy. Heard good things about Mazdas and reliability, still concerned with higher mileage. Might also tune it, so I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I want to hear what DA thinks.

I've heard terrible things about mazdas. They blow up prematurely. Stay far away.

Myth, the only ones that blew were Mazdaspeed3s with the turbos, and those only threw rods when people turned up the boost to unsafe levels or never maintained them.

The MZR engines are very robust, Ford literally uses variants of those engines in their Ecoboost lineup to this day.

they're good cars but they're prone to rust
the amount of money you would spend "tuning" it would be better spent on a car where you get better gains for your money, which would be a Mazdaspeed3

    Lol, lmao
I bought a 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 for $6500 (130k mi). Replaced the engine and turbo, added aluminum flywheel and a couple bolt ons. Still only in it 13k. and I have a spare motor to tinker with now.

Yeah, it's a bullshit price. Mazda3 at that age is a $3k car at most.

Dream on, you won't even find a running one at that price in the current market.

        >Might also tune it, so I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I want to hear what DA thinks.
Get a MazdaSpeed3 if you want fast Mazda. good luck finding one that isn't thrashed to death.

MazdaSpeed 3 is unreliable torque steer-ey shit. The skyactivs aren't fast but they handle really well for not being a purpose-built sports car.

I've heard terrible things about mazdas. They blow up prematurely. Stay far away.

RX-7s, maybe. Mazda is always right under Toyota at the top of Consumer Reports reliability rankings, it's the most underrated car out there in terms of reliability. They curb stomp Honda despite the constant beating drum of "muh Honda reliability". The Skyactiv in particular is all-Mazda and no Ford and is known for lasting an insanely long time.

Stop living in states that get snow.

There are also virtually no performance parts even available for the Skyactiv, not even an intake or K&N filter. It's not worth it anyway, the engine isn't built for having power added, it's designed top to bottom to be lightweight for good MPG and is perfectly fine and reliable if left stock.

Torque steer is a non issue at stock power levels. You have to have good tires tho

I have basically this exact car minus some of the upper end package and with over 200k miles, but I paid $4500 for mine (in about $7k total with a lot of preventative maintenance and some overdue stuff like motor mounts, brakes/rotors, tires, etc). This has less than half the miles, is in great shape, and appears loaded, but IMO isn't worth more than $10k for my money. If these were all city miles, it may not even drive better than mine, which was mostly highway based on the location of previous owners (always in commuter suburbs in California and Texas).

Go on FB Marketplace and find a good mechanic to do an inspection if you don't know enough. Even nice ones on there rarely go for more than $8-$9k.

I see a lot of people mentioning how much cheaper they can find the cars, I just don’t see any within 150 miles at that price. I mean, if 85k miles isn’t going to result in pricy repairs in the near future, I might just knock them down a grand and call it there. It’s a nice hatch. Also regarding modding, it’s not the end of the world for me. I wouldn’t mind tweaking the suspension for some bumpier terrain, but 155HP seems pretty solid.

I got this in New York for less than that thing. It’s a Mazdaspeed 3, makes 310 whp, and has a huge aftermarket community. Manual transmission too. If you’re an enthusiast and want a fast Mazda this is literally the peak of ot

And yes it is an enthusiast car, 6 speed manual, mod friendly, easily makes upwards of 400 whp with bolt ons, multi link rear suspension, spacious, fun to drive, raw. What’s not to appreciate?

I could never justify buying a mazda. For the same price you could buy a honda or toyota and get a vehicle that last 3x as long. Shit ever an e90 is more reliable than these.

The car I posted has been reliable ever since I’ve owned it. No engine issues, nothing. The reliability issues people speak of have been nonexistent for me. No grenading, turbo still makes 21 psi of boost, no knocking. Whatever myth about them being unreliable isn’t there

            Anonymous

What im saying is that Honda has a history and reputation of making quality automobiles while mazda on the other hand is know for its excessive rust and premature engine failure.

            Anonymous

I have never ever heard anything about Mazda and engine failures being synonymous. And rust? That’s about as much of a Mazda issue as it is a Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and any other Japanese car being in the rust belt. They all rust to pieces, they aren’t salt treated

            So your point is moot

            Anonymous

Not moot. You haven't heard of it because you are an arrogant mazda owner that refuses to see the faults within the car you own. Also please dont compare Honda and Toyota with Subaru. It's embarrassing.

            Anonymous

No, I haven’t because the few instances of engine failure are few and far between, even on the mazdaspeed platforms they’re incredibly uncommon. Modern Mazda engines aren’t even fords anymore

I have a 2014 mazda 3. My family used to own a protégé and own a cx30 now. Mazda makes good cars and I would recommend them. They're not fast but they're fun to drive and handle well. 14 grand seems steep for a 13. I remember our protégé rusted pretty bad near the end but my mazda 3 has no rust on it and I live in canada. They've definitely fixed the rust issues but again you should look into that for the model year you're looking at.
