Based, SOVLpilled and Junglepilled.
Never forget what they took from us.
Speak English, retard.
why was everything so much more comfy
It was the pre-normie, pre-corporate takeover era where tech was made for geeks, by geeks. It was paradise
either you like or don't you can't deny people had a lot of creativity back then
now everything feels so dull
Tech art went from attempting to imitate reality to material and people with noodle arms and tiny heads. There are words to describe the styles and the phenomenon better but I'm retarded.
Point is the "soul" you're feeling is because of an art style. There's no more merit to art or soul making fucking super Mario skins compared to matte colors and abstract shapes. I can look at those skins and see they're analogous to Firefox themes of today. No drastical change to humanity's creativity, just a different era
Skeuomorphism had utility and direction.
The people that replaced the skeuomorphic UI designers struggled with visual/spacial reasoning and didn't understand why all these things were done. In addition software changed into a tool for projecting power onto its consumers rather than empowering them. This meant customization became a problem rather than a goal.
All of this happened at around the same time and was probably caused by the same thing.
>struggled with visual/spacial reasoning
Why are you so antisemetic?
>pre-corporate takeover era
>Microshart winblows
Lmao homosexual zoomer
teh rei
>it was pre normie
homosexual you were the normie
nobody that used computers for work went anywhere near these themes
>nobody that used computers for work went anywhere near these themes
LOL. How to tell me you're a zoomer without telling me you're a zoomer lmao. Office computers were full of customized shit, you stupid dumbass, go back to one of your shitty consumerist threads and stay there
>go back to one of your shitty consumerist threads
>this thread is about a shitty windows skin that came with microsoft plus, which had to be purchased
unfathomably retarded
You didn't live through it, how the fuck would you know? All you know is flat shit and soulless corporate UX
>an adfilled media player nobody used
lmao now I know you're trolling
Still looks a billion times better than your flatshit, homosexual zoomer
i always hated real player and always avoided it. start of streaming bs, it was
>pre-corporate takeover
80% of those skins are advertisements for some corporate product. The fact that idiots created those ads for free just makes it worse.
Mad samefag zoomer who will never ever know what true soulful software means
Is there a FOSS winamp replacement compatible with winamp skins?
Audacious
>pre-normie
>normie
You're both normalfags.
This.
I am tired of these motherfucking extended-summerfags on this motherfucking chan.
First, who (I mean real people, not invading normalfags) isn't?
Second, what's there to do about it? User moderation is no longer allowed, lack of visible sage makes it much harder anyway. Mods ARE those very normalfags who've come with the eternal summer, and there is no other venue to act as refuge.
>NOOOO I LIKED IT BETTER WHEN PEOPLE SHUNNED ME AND THOUGHT I WAS A FAG AND A LOSER FOR BEING ONLINE ALL DAY
wish granted
Normalfag.
UI research aimed to make the most usable UI rather than scam users
Computers not connected to the internet at all times. Creativity ran wild instead of the whim of common society dictating thought patterns. The primary use of an OS was not to open a browser
you were a child
A tempting explanation. But for many childhood experiences, adults of various ages agree with me that it was not only better than now, but superior to their own childhoods.
No one knew what "worked" yet and there were no ideas about nebulous things like "best practice". As a result people just did whatever they thought was right rather than doing what a book told them was correct. I won't deny that it was comfy, it was: but it was a lot less user friendly.
People seem to have this idea that normies ruined computing. That's not the case at all: nerds ruined computing by making it normie friendly, because if there's one thing nerds can't fucking help themselves from doing, it's desperately trying to get people into their hobbies.
Dumbest zoomer post itt
I'm not a zoomer and I'm not wrong. Kys.
Gotta admit, that's a good joke.
>No one knew what "worked" yet
nope, the complete opposite is true. UIs had been extensively researched and tested by that time. for some reason the industry collectively forgot this vast body of knowledge as soon as people started using iphones.

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/IBM_Common_User_Access
>why was everything so much more comfy
ikr?
>No one knew what "worked" yet
Bullshit. We'd had decades of HCI research by then (no, it's not called "UX", go take that homosexualry elsewhere) and every major OS had converged on proven solutions and UI standards.
>nerds ruined computing by making it normie friendly
Essentially true, but:
1) All of this has been driven by managers and other idiots, not the techies told to implement it,
2) Making things normie-friendly isn't always bad... the problem is the way ((they)) achieve this.
The right way:
- Having a relatively simple UI, but an "Advanced" option for power users to turn it into the full UI,
- Adhering to your platform's UI standards/guidelines (e.g. common hotkey conventions for actions like Open/Save, menu options with ellipsis to indicate they trigger a dialolg...) so that user knowledge is transferable from other applications to yours.
The wrong way:
- Butchering programs and removing every feature and button until you're left with a full-screen "app" with just one or two controls so that even a literal monkey can use it.
Because white people still controlled the world. When hardware and software was outsourced to 3rd worlders we lost everything. They don’t have the brain capacity for any kind of imagination or creativity in the work they do.
Depends where the pajeet is raised.
Those raised in India are genuinely lacking in competence because of the stagnated industry cultures there.
Those raised in the west were generally the smarter bunch at school and in organisations.
The academic award winners at my school were always full of indians, because they had a rough ancestral background and then were raised in a good studying/work culture.
But that might change as the worlds cultures become nagger tier.
Very good joke. I bet some people will think you're serious though.
It isn't thirdies who're directing the awful hci of nowadays
It's all white people and israelites in first world countries, plenty of w*men too
You just miss your child hood

You don't need more.

the 90s and early 2000s were a magical time in which desktop customization was actually supported and embraced to some extent by soulless big tech megacorps like microshit. part of me doubts that we're ever getting it back

I fucking wish it was true for every one of them.
My library is too big to search through now even though it's well organized
Gotta either search 3tb worth of files or click through
>Queen
>Studio albums
>>1973. Queen
>1973. Queen - Queen (1986, EMI, UK, CD-FA 3040)
>Open Queen - Queen [CDP 7 46204 2].cue
>Find the track I want in player
Or open foobar search queen queue the album and click the track I want
>tech illiterate moron thinks you have to open a file to see its filename
Try getting your OS to go through a 3tb index and give you about 100 different versions of the same song (live in Reno, radio edit, extended mix, DNA remix, versions from the anime that have the character dialogue still in them)
for reference, this is what i get when i search for a song name and limit it to the band's folder
stop downloading the same song 15 times?
Your index is a few mb's big, cletus.
yeah my foobar library loads instantly but searching a mechanical hard drive in nautilus/explorer takes a minute
That's because it's not indexed, genius. locate does not have this problem.
dont have locate sorry
i do have foobar which makes things a lot easier though
i dont get this at all shit looks like every other fucking music player. Why didn't they just stick to the winamp style but also add features like foobar.
They got bought out
Eh, old Winamp still works fine on wine. I don't know about Windows. The team has always been full of retards chasing arbitrary "modernity", plus I think the whole brand has been bought by Chinamen. If you want something "modern", I suggest looking in to WACUP. Even though it's almost been 2 years since its last public release, it's still neat.
AIMP is the real Winamp successor. It has skins, visualization, customizability and plug-ins.
Will it do milkdrop? If not I’m not interested

All of this software still exists, you can just install and use it, but you won't.
yawn
part of the magic comes from the knowledge that others like you are first exploring computers and the internet and they're all on there waiting for you. there's no magic because there's nothing there to explore anymore. we have to look forward and find some new uncharted territory, as much as the 90s still to this day feels like home to us.
I have an old thinkpad running xp that I'm using for word processing only and it's great. I wish I knew where or how to get old software on to it
How old is it? No USB at all?
got this screenshot with the album i downloaded off soulseek
Is this the OS they use in the jungles of Africa or something?
>most-used os in the world
surely there are still third-party desktop themes or skins or icon packs, right?
i used to rock it on 98SE
how do get this on windows 11?
>how do get this on windows 11?
Extract the theme and manually add wallpaper, sound effects, font, icons, etc
wouldn't be surprised if it works with uxtheme patched or some shit
yeah i'll try that. i look around the settings to replace windows sounds and cursor but got depressed by the way things are buried now
the plus themes still mostly work if you're the classic theme, but a lot of things don't automatically get applied anymore, like the desktop wallpaper or the custom explorer icons
sure, it was kitschy corporate garbage even back then, but nostalgia is a powerful thing so go fuck yourself
What the fuck, the themes still work?
This blows my mind right now. A part of me wants to setup a Windows PC now, to play around with that.
tl;dr, the "windows classic" theme as we all know it is really just windows without the msstyles theming engine introduced in xp. microshit never got rid of it and they physically can't without overhauling low level parts of the os (https://www.geoffchappell.com/studies/windows/shell/index.htm), all they've really done is bury the hell out of it
> microshit never got rid of it and they physically can't without overhauling low level parts of the os
Yes, and instead of getting rid of it they just decided to try and render it inoperable. Go ahead, turn on the Windows Classic theme and then try to right click in any folder in explorer.exe
just let people have their boomer theme, fucking why do that
explorerpatcher fixes the right click context menu in win10 1809(?) and up, but yes, it's fucking stupid and i fully expect them to continue "accidentally" breaking the classic theme in the future. even in its current state it's pretty janky, retrobar doesn't quite do it for me as a taskbar replacement for example and everything else sucks, which is part of the reason why i'm still clinging onto win7
hah, these days you need windowblinds just to get aero glass or theme windows properly at all and it's STILL a bloated piece of shit that doesn't work half the time. windows ricing peaked on xp and it's only been getting worse for the last 15 years, everyone just gave up on it and i hate it
> explorerpatcher fixes the right click context menu in win10 1809(?) and up
Holy shit thanks anon, I've been looking for something like that for so long and it seemed as if there was no fix for this.
>windows ricing peaked on xp and it's only been getting worse for the last 15 years, everyone just gave up on it and i hate it
the worst part is for work reasons* I was forced to update to W10
it is not bad but I can feel that part of the soul missing, and it keeps getting worse. I dread when I will have to update to W11, can you move the taskbar to the sides yet there?
*the reason being W7 not being supported anymore officially by some libraries, and that cascading into other software** from which I have dependencies on not working in W7 at all no matter the hacks I try
**fuck node.js
I kinda like windows 11s ui but I like gnome
>msstyles
ah, the time of using WindowBlinds themes unofficially, just with a patched up .dll
Amazing.
Haven't touched Windows in years and I only come to these Windows threads for nostalgia homosexualry. But if I can apply these old themes and still have a working computer, I might built a shitbox to play around with that. Just to remind myself of the good old days.
Thank you very much anon.
https://winclassic.boards.net/thread/990/windows-classic-theme-on-1903
you're not going to break anything as long as you disable autoupdates and make a backup (unless you have no idea what you're doing and accidentally delete system32 or some shit), there's some general wonkiness you just kinda have to accept like win32 message boxes having a smaller font size for some reason and i remember having issues booting into safe mode, but i managed to work around it by starting explorer.exe manually? it's worth fucking around with in a vm at least, 8/8.1 and earlier versions of 10 handle the classic theme a little better but those are getting fucked over in terms of software support now
idk if explorerpatcher breaks with every monthly update like it does on win11 and i haven't tried any of the newer versions, but it does a perfect job of fixing the stupid context menu. be warned that the native win10 taskbar doesn't work well even if you use explorerpatcher to fix it (some of the right click context menus look broken, always combining taskbar buttons doesn't work, etc.) so you'll probably want to use retrobar
>baseddev javascript crap
lol
there are plenty of third-party alternatives for getting a vertical taskbar on win11 (explorerpatcher, startallback, start11, retrobar, third-party shells like cairo and xoblite, etc.), i sincerely doubt m$ will ever add it back in because the windows shell division is full of diversity hires and sociopaths that use macbooks and hate anything resembling functional ui design. maybe if they start getting extraordinarily bad press on something and they need to pull a pr stunt out of their ass they'll do it, but even then i doubt it
Thanks, I give it a shot.
I'm so unused to Windows now, it might take a few tries. Let's see how much I'm going to break.
>baseddev javascript crap
Don't blame me, blame the Heroku CLI depending on node.js to the point merely git-ting up a new version needs an OS node.js supports just to login
fuck node.js
anyways, thanks
> idk if explorerpatcher breaks with every monthly update like it does on win11
It's ok, I'm on LTSC 1809 with autoupdates disabled.
And yeah, I'm using retrobar.
>I want to maximize security holes and zero days
based homosexual I hope you use that machine to write word documents and nothing else
Which zoomzoom infl*encer told you to say this?
please give me your ip range so I can get port scanning
we can talk about your favorite zoomers in the mean time uwu
>MUST UPDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT
I never said I don't update shit at all you dumb nagger. I do it when I'm sure none of the shit I have installed will break.

1809 with no updates is what, 9 years old?
you're either malicious or retarded
You're an unthinking automaton.
>with no updates

Not only you are a dumb nagger, you are also a blind nagger.

youre certainly welcome to download my library and figure it out yourself though
i used the warcraft one when it came out. the file folders were runecloth bags
meanwhile every windows version after xp CANT REMEBER MY FILE SORT BY OPTIONS REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. YOU MICRO naggerS HAVENT FIXED IT IN ALMOST 15 YEARS
Ah man, reminds me of a time when I used to fuck with the themes of our home pc and my family members used to get mad.
Good times.
98, ME and XP had absolutely insane amounts of customizable potential
So does 10 and 11, but nobody knows how it works because the devs put so many workarounds for things like pinned apps to prevent users and app makers from automatically configuring stuff.
https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20030903-00/?p=42673
There's a reason for that.
It's a huge security risk. Hell notifications are so fucking dangerous. Even the desktop can be dangerous in this regard.
The future is strangely - terminal UI.
Until people master the terminal UI, we have no hope as a species.
pls gib waifu pape
>Ricochet Xtreme
For me it's Science, still use a similar KDE theme
All I ask for, windows, is consolidate the Windows API into ONE API. Not COM+WIN32+.NET+CIM+HIVAIDS.
And please for the love of god keep it better documented.
The bugs are pure cancer.
Based. Now just add this screen saver and it's perfect.
Thank you for posting this OP, you just brought me good memories from my childhood
You were free to use pic related if you wanted and most people did, for about two minutes and then it stopped being funny and they went to something a bit easier on the eyes, like the 'Black Leather Jacket' theme.
shit like this is no longer """""""SOVL"""" because the yesteturwebz zoomies are obsessed with it and they even made their whole larpy online persona around it, while also injecting their current day degeneracy like tranny/furry shit. newsflash kiddo: back in the 90's, being gay is actually illegal even in the west. and furries still doesnt exist.
it was only soul when millenials or gen x are actually using them unironically when they first came out.
you're no less of a mindrotten spastic
