What commonly used programming language has only existed for a decade?
typescript
php
Well its certainly not in widespread use though it is kinda comfy.

php will always have retarded shit but the new versions are at least bearable.

55 yo, I posted my languages here:
Started programming in BASIC on my father's lab computer when I was seven, then C in my late teens. The rest is history.

They tried doing the same to me, but so far I've managed to keep some time reserved for programming each week so I don't lose my touch.

My subordinates do that. it's getting to the point where I don't actually do anything except read slides out loud in meetings. I wonder every day how I am actually contributing. there are worse ways to earn a wage I suppose

From the preface of "The C++ Programming Language" by the guy who invented C++.
It isn't technically a complete superset but trying to go "uhhhhhh ACTUALLY" about it is the type of pointless pedantry used by retards who want to impress people but don't know enough to do anything other than take issue with colloquial language usage from people who actually have a job.

How do you find Haskell? How long have you been using it?
I'm a mathfag who took compsci shit on the side and got employed doing software stuff, haskell was an interest to me after finding out about functional languages which happened after reading up on type theory and theorem provers on a whim ( Voevodsky is a big name in math which is how I ran into it ) so it was a hobby since then. I've never used it for anything serious or professionally, just interesting stuff in its own right at least at the moment.
Oh yeah, I still find the type theory stuff very interesting. Stopped writing software in Haskell though.

Yes
The BEAM and OTP are the coolest part about Erlang/OTP.
There are many languages that run on the BEAM (for example LFE), so if you're into lisps, you can go with it instead.

I did a PhD years ago which was basically "take this algorithm, extend it to 3d, and implement it in Fortran 90 on a giant Silicon Graphics cluster". Ended up with a bitching fast OpenMP/MPI hybrid implementation for certain stellar physics simulations
Favourite moment in tech was when it finally worked correctly and I had hundreds of cores (back when that meant something) in dozens of blades all working together in sync. everything since has been a bit lame
>OpenSCAD
>PHP
>PHP & JavaScript
There are a few annoying things about PHP but overall I find it comfy and undeserving of its bad reputation. Maybe the newer versions are better than it used to be.
The OpenSCAD was because I used to be in music and learned it to prototype a musical instrument.
Old PHP (1990s - mid 2010s) was absolute dogshit. It has improved. The world has moved on. I tried django recently and can't decide if it sucks more or less than my neolithic blog system I set up around 1999
PHP has improved sure, but is there any reason to use it anymore when Python 3 and Django exist?
Imagine moter boating those titties every day, god damn.

What's so good about it over the usual C book?
if by "the usual C book" you mean K&R's book then it's far superior to that for people who are beginners to low level languages. K&Rs book is brutal for most average programmer zoomer brainlets and it's also sort of outdated as much as outdated a C book can be.
Just pickup the new Tiny C Projects book it's good.

C# and C++
GML was a first for me too. I also love C#, but I love Typescript these days too.
I went:
GML -> C (failing at it, even installing a compiler as a kid was hard in the early 00's) -> GML -> C (this time I was ~15 and actually managed to make progress) -> C++ -> a little x86 asm -> mix of java, python, c for school/uni -> graduated -> C# -> JavaScript -> Typescript.
My programming style has changed a lot over the years. Coding professionally really taught me that most of OO design pattern enterprise arch stuff is bullshit and shouldn't be used 99% of the time.
I'm glad I learnt C first (after GML) because it taught me how fast computers can be, but god I couldn't be bothered with how tedious it is to do simple things in it.
>even installing a compiler as a kid was hard in the early 00's
why are you lying? it was one package on loonix
on windows, it came with the pirated vs, turbo c or if you were a masochist, there was that delphi ide thing that bundled a compiler
it might have been hard for idiots, but people who reach at least 3 digits iq were perfectly capable of installing a compiler
