isn't it curious how chinese music apparently is that popular yet we never hear any of it here? >inb4 language barrier
this doesn't happen with japan or korea, plenty of music nerds know about 70s rock bands from germany, france, and brazilian music peaked in the 70s, but nothing about china, why is that?
There really isn't a conspiracy here.
China is very insular because of the great firewall. Generally very little information about the country slips out, not just when it comes to music. A huge event can take place in China and maybe some Western media reports on it months later.
The measure of how big the music market is, doesn't prove anything in regards to quality.
Chinese music is generally derivative and what is allowed to be accessible is deemed safe. There's simply not much interesting going on that you couldn't just find from the source in other countries.
The great firewall just stops Chinese citizens from accessing content from corporations who don't follow Chinese laws. It doesn't stop anyone from viewing Chinese content.
China just doesn't broadcast itself and it doesn't have much in the way of entry-level content like anime. They're a country of 1.4 billion so they can make content that's very much Chinese. China has more people than the entire Western world, so if their websites are impossible for an English-speaker to navigate, they don't give a shit because they're perfectly navigable by the larger Chinese audience they care about.
The West uses China as a boogie-man, setting up a predisposition to ignore anything about China that's not anti-Chinese propaganda.
I feel like Japan has a pretty big presence among noise rock fans, especially because of bands like Boredoms, Melt-Banana, Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, Guitar Wolf, MONO, and old noisy punk bands like GISM and Confuse. I know noise rock is a niche thing, but Japan left its mark on it.
Oh, also, the entire screamo/post-rock fusion that's getting bigger and bigger was kicked off and led by the Japanese band Envy.
