Medusa Magazine‘s satirical feminist op-eds kept getting scooped by the actual liberal media.
The website shut down this week after its creator revealed in a blog post. “I am shutting it down because Feminist stupidity has surpassed satire,” wrote the author, who remains anonymous.
Describing himself as the owner of Age of Shitlords, an anti-social justice blog, the author says that he and his (or her) “fellow shitposters” published pieces on the website prided themselves “on writing fairly believable satire with just enough retardation to keep our readers in constant doubt.”
“This has been fun, but all good things have to come to an end,” wrote the anonymous creator. “I am shutting down this website because recent events have proven to us that it is no longer possible to satirize the Feminist left.”
Since it launched in 2016, the website has been cited by numerous publications across the political spectrum. Its creator took pride in pranking a Russian website that cited a Medusa article on “white abortions” as proof of the creep of political correctness in the West. Websites like InfoWars and Gateway Pundit lambasted the same article.
The creator described the website as “the ultimate Social Experiment” and cited a post from May 2016 as proof of his claims that the website was indeed satirical. He wanted “to see how long it will take the Feminists who follow us and the anti-Feminists who oppose us to realize its all a big joke.” [sic]
The content hosted on Medusa was none too different than anything one might find on Everyday Feminism, Mic, the Mary Sue, and Affinity Magazine, which have published similar articles with headlines as absurd as the content of their body, including “I’m An Activist. Am I Allowed to Unplug From the Internet?”, and “A Beginner’s Guide To Being A Feminist Killjoy.”
Despite Medusa’s similarities with the other verticals, not everyone fell for Medusa’s ruse. According to Medusa’s founder, users from Reddit’s GamerGate-oriented subreddit KotakuInAction were quick to discern that the website was indeed run by the writers behind Age of Shitlords.
Following the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal in Hollywood, the authors at Medusa published a satirical piece titled “Why we should believe women who accuse right wingers of rape more than those who accuse liberals.”
The founder described the piece as a “total caricature intended to be as ridiculous as possible,” but realized how days later, the Washington Post ran an article by actual feminist Kate Harding who called on her allies on the left to defend Al Franken despite the allegations against him.
“We thought no one in the world could possibly hold views as ridiculous as that, so we wrote it as satire and published it,” Medusa’s founder wrote, concluding that the site will be shut down because “there is no point in operating a caricature website of Feminism anymore when real life Feminists are now more insane than any caricature we could ever dream up.”
Medusa’s creator says that its readers (who undoubtedly hate-followed it) can just look to any legitimate feminist blog or follow one of the many “obnoxious feminists” on Twitter for similar content, minus the irony.
“Feminists are now more insane than any caricature we could ever dream up,” the founder wrote.
