Just keep it outside of your window just like an A/C unit.
That way you don't have to bother with the diesel smell.
Its actually more efficient the higher the burn rate. However, just keeping the fan on low and the heat on low so the unit itself gets to its peak temp inside the burn chamber, keeps it clean so you don't have to take it apart and clean the burn chamber every couple of months.
You can use some of that automotive Carbon cleaner, but your best off just taking it apart if you are handy, and cleaning it yourself when it gets clogged up and looses efficiency/Peak heat output.

I'm on year two of homeless SUV sleeping. Personally, I have a blanket folded four times in my trunk which I sleep on. On top of that, I have a broken zipper 10 degree sleeping bag I sleep on top of as well. I then put a 30 degree bag in a 35 degree bag, and that's the set up. Moisture management means I have to leave the windows cracked or the environment gets too wet to stay warm.
