He is a great lyricist, a great poet, but not a great musician. I saw him play at a festival in the late 90s, and it was cool to see him, but he only deserves credit as a poet
For my 21st birthday, my mom bought me two lawn seat tickets to see the Grateful Dead play at Riverport Ampitheatre. It was the summer of 1994, and Western society was at its peak.
*shitty CIA-funded Bo Diddley beat starts playing*
WELL, I'M JUST A REDNECK DOWN FROM TENNESEE
*Bob Weir plays something completely unmusical on the guitar that will be discussed by fans for the next century*
GOT CAUGHT BY THEM PO-LEECE ON A COCAINE SPREE
*Jerry goes into a 45-minute pentatonic 'exploration'*
OH SUGAR DARLIN', LAWD HAVE MERCY ON ME
*the crowd erupts into 45 minutes of what may be applause or perhaps gruesome acts of cannibalism on the stadium grounds but nobody cares cause of all the drugs being sold out front*
Everything up to '72 is 10/10 killer. Not a fan of their jazz fusion stuff, myself, but they picked up again in the '80s. St Stephen –> The Eleven Jam –> Turn On Your Lovelight off of Live/Dead has to be the best thing they've ever done. I especially like their country blues sound like on Bear's Choice and Skull & Roses, which really peaks with American Beauty. There's lots to check out by them, even the official stuff.
I am a fan of Phil as well. My personal favorite Phil performance was Halloween night 1999, my brother and I drove all day to get to UIC Chicago to see Phil Lesh and Bob Dylan play. Phil had the guitarist and keyboardist from Phish with him.

Reddit is also filled with druggies and boomers -- for obvious reasons.
Go back homosexual
Rap is not music.
Said the man who played on a rap song...
I'm sure you mean Robert Hunter. He is the Grateful Dead.

He actually had a pretty good voice and could perform when he had Jerry's band backing him. I like this song and Promontory Rider.
MOST OF THE CATS THAT YOU MEET ON THE STREET SPEAK OF TRUE LOVE
MOST OF THE TIME, THEY'RE SITTIN' AN' CRYIN' AT HOME....

90-96 were peak years in America.
Touch of Grey and The Weight are their only good songs
fight me
The Weight isn't even a Grateful Dead song.
It was originally by The Band.
the greatest band there ever was and ever will be
They aren’t a band, they’re a Satanic cult. And anything not sung by Pigpen is clown shoes.

I see a fellow fan 🙂
09/15/74 Great show.

Why yes, yes I do.
I wish Jerry just told the Dead to fuck off and did this stuff exclusively after 91.
I think you meant to say PHIL LESH!

That's cool! I'm downloading that performance now hehehe

Thanks, friend.
Looks like an interesting set.
Dylan's performance from that evening exists someplace on YouTube
Viola Lee was the gem of the evening.
I live in Chicago and didn't know about that show.
Wish I had known.
I would've been there.
I think Workingman's Dead could've been 1000x better if they hadn't left this song off the album...
When they were truly at their best....
god those haircuts are awful
Well, it was the 1960s, and they were in their early 20s....
how do you replicate something like that? It's literally the peak. All downhill from here, back pain gets worse, knees go out, etc
>how do you replicate something like that?
heroin and cheeseburgers
Best Pigpen songs?
I always kinda liked this...
Operator isn’t just one of the best Pigpen songs, it’s one of the best songs of all time. Also check Mr. Charlie off Europe ‘72.
I listened to Dark star the other day
For me it's big railroad blues or Althea
One of my favorite GD performances and Jerry solos, they only played this song 3 times.
