injuries fucked us over in 2006. 2002-2004 squads came up against the best sides in the tournament in the qf.

Getting beaten twice by Baby CR7 must have hurt your players ego. Becks being regularly outshined by Zizou and Figo on major tournaments certainly broke the hype.

Why didn’t this guys win anything.
Guys like Raul, Hierro or Morientes were already dominating Europe with Real Madrid.

refballed by worst Korea, which had previously refballed Italy and Portugal.

Team would've reached sf against Germany (carried by Ballack, Kahn and Klose) and maybe reach and lose the final against insanely OP Brasil

2000-2004 we had stacked teams. Having players from Valencia that reached the CL final twice, + Real Madrid players that won it twice those years. Add to that good players like young Puyol and specially prime Valerón, a player equal to the likes of Riquelme or Zidane.

First and main problem was the coach, Camacho is a complete retard and Iñaki Saez was even worse. Having already great midfielders capable of controlling the pace of the game, they insisted on playing 2 or 3 strikers at the same time (I think once it was Morientes + Torres + Raul), since those were the stars according to the press. They couldn't play Mendieta consistently + Valerón + Albelda and Baraja, no. We had to add the meme second striker always and sometimes end the match with 3 (Alfonso? Urzaiz?). Plus Guardiola and Luis Enrique were shit those years already but kept playing for some reason.

Basically Raúl, Hierro and Madrid press in general used to have the NT kidnapped until Luis Aragonés decided to not select Raúl anymore and to put the best players without looking their clubs or name. Look at Luis Enrique, almost 15 years later he faced the same backlash and harrassing Aragonés had for not bringing a single Real Madrid player to the Euro last year. Sergio Ramos? Lol.

weakmind, poor managers and the illusion that you're doing well by being good enough to beat mid-ranking teams and the odd decent team every now and again but cannot put together a sustained tournament run against top teams

for some reason the FA love their England 'projects' and put a managerial type in that is too technical/pragmatic when that doesn't suit a national team with a limited player pool

The players play for top teams and are trained and coached daily, they don't need a technical coach to come in and waste the handful of training sessions telling them what they already know...

Eriksson, Capello, McLaren were all those types

      >that doesn't suit a national team with a limited player pool
england along with france have the deepest player pools, what are you on about?

as in you can't buy any player, you have to work with what you have not buy players to fit your limited style of play like you can at club level... essentially the core of the team in any generation picks itself due to what you have to work with

Should have stuck with venables or hoddle. Venables was a great man manager and motivator according to all his players and was tactically astute - (putting reknapp on v scotland and platt v spain in euro 96 - came withing a cunt hair of the final) and hoddle had a good forward thinking 3-5-2 system and unlike sven wasn't afraid to leave big names out.

    >2002
Choked in the group stage by drawing against Sweden and Nigeria, putting us up against Brazil's superior golden generation in the quarter finals. We'd probably still have been beaten by Brazil in the semi-final, but at least it would've been a more commendable result
    >2004
    Refballed by Portugal
    >2006
Injuries to our best players (who were played anyway) and disharmonious group of players torn apart even further by WAG drama and media scrutiny

A mix of refball, bad luck with penalty shootouts and spineless managers not being able to drop one of Lampard or Gerrard in favour of a more balanced team

The main issue was the midfield. You can't play both gerrard and lampard as CM's as they basically played as second strikers for their teams and are not playmakers. They were called "box to box" midfielders and that was it - they were either running forwards past a striker to score or running back to make a tackle that looked good for the cameras. Neither of them could control the midfield and together they were even worse - Lampard wrote how the players always complained they got over run in mid even against shit teams but sven always persisted. If they had to play a 4-4-2 the team should have been built round scholes and either butt/carrick/hargreaves beside him, beckham on the right and either cole or downing on the left. Gerrard and Lampard could not play in a mid 4 - they always played with 2 DM's behind them for their clubs and benitez himself said he wouldn't trust gerrard as a CM (proved right when he fucked up and lost liverpool the league).

McClaren did actually try a 4-3-3 several times with gerrard+lampard+a DM (usually Barry or Carrick) but this didn't work and the balance was wrong - gerrard and lamps would leave barry all by himself and the over run problem continued. England failed to qualify for euro 2008 doing this.

Capello was just as bad - he did recognise the problem but he persisted with a 4-4-2 and gerrard and lampard together with gerrard usually played on the right or left of a compact 4. This rigid 4-4-2 negated all of the positives that gerrard and lampard could bring - they were shackled to the system and not allowed to play with the freedom they got at their clubs.

England made a mistake sacking venables in 96 and hoddle in 2000. They both had a system and identity and wouldn't try to fit square pegs into round holes. Venables had a "christmas tree" formation of 4-3-2-1 which could have accomdated all of scholes, gerrard and lampard and hoddle played a modern 3-5-2 back in 98 which again could have used those players correctly

This, the meme answer to their failures has always been "muh club rivalry and ego" when in reality our midfielders were limited in their playstyle

I still can't believe Owen won that Ballon d'Or over Raul (CL and Liga top scorer), Kahn (CL and Bundes winner) or even Rivaldo, who basically carried a dead Barcelona and qualified Brasil for the World Cup they were about to miss. He wasn't even top-3 scorers neither in the 2000-2001 season nor the 2001-2002.

Owen won the ballon d'or because last year they gave it to Rivaldo the ballon d'or for winning nothing, over Beckham who won the treble.

Scholes, Lampard, and Gerrard not being played at their right position. Scholes always needed a DM to protect him. Gerrard/Lampard needs to be on rotation. Rooney/Owen must also switch between games.

Part of that is because they rigidly stuck to 4-4-2, if they played 3 at the back they could have played everyone in position.

Let their egos get the better of them.

In interviews and stuff they said they hated each other. Man united players refused to speak to chelsea players. How you supposed to win shit when you hate each other and wont even speak to each other.

Around this time in England and before it was super 'macho man' culture where they would rather sabotage their england career than to be seen 'bonding with the enemy'. They needed to grow the fuck up
