Considering they don't directly pay a tax on fuel, you have to do something to fund road repair.

5% clearly isn't enough for the powers that be. Thought they would have waited a little longer for uptake before pulling the rug though, like diesel.

tax should be directly proportionate to car weight

This for real, would be so beneficial for pretty much everything if the kei style cars were a thing in europe. Cheaper to do business and most people dont need more than a 50hp 4 seater anyway

That would just mean trucks end up paying almost all of the road tax, which is pretty based

Bigger cars pay more registestion because they do more damage to roads

That already comes from your taxes whether you're a road user or not. It even comes out of the cost for registering your car.

Last winter, I was hell bent on buying an EV. Shills had me for a second, then I started following EV channels on social media, I wanted to learn as much as I can before I pull the trigger. Once I realized each one of these influencer homosexuals is slowly starting to lose their optimism in regards to electrification and probably regretting some decisions, I let go of the idea and I'm glad I did. And don't get me started on the fact that each EV expert is deeply invested in EV companies and basically acts as salesman/lobbyist (you can read their posts on this board every day).

Instead of giving unnecessary subsidies, they just stopped taxing EVs.

Everyone should have done that and it would have been better off from an accounting perspective.

A big reason why people like EVs is not having to go to gas stations at all and minimizing trips to mechanics (new tires mostly)
And if you don't live in a shithole like Germany the cost to driver per km is significantly cheaper than gas. Someone buying or leasing a new car will look at total cost of ownership

          Anonymous

German here, the problem with ev is, that you need a garage with a charhing point which many people do not have. Also many "long range" ev are so big they don't fit in many garages.
Also electricity prices just got raised by another 100% so frick my life

            >2. strange mix of fast chargers and trickle chargers
            >3. actually expensive to charge (I saw prives up to 60ct a KWh some months ago, probably more expensive now
            >4. lacking place and cable infrastructure to build more than a handful of chargers per street, some places have cables so old that fast chargers can not be build at all
            >5. ice cars and ev which are not currently charging are not allowed to park on charging places making the scarcity for parking spaces in inner cities worse
            >6. the advent of swappable batteries might make the charging infrastructure obsolete
            >7. Bavaria plans to create a hydrogen network making chargers obsolete
            But worst is
            >8. you are only allowed to stay on a charging place during the process of charging. Then you have to leave. Have fun to wake up at 3 am when your car finished charging and now you have to find an actual parking space (see point 5)

            Anonymous

Can you please elaborate, since no I don't drive an ev. I looked into it, but there are no small ev with a decent range and the reduction in servicing and fueling cost would not break even for a long time.
If you think that 60 ct a KWh was an exaggeration or it was the cost of a super-hyper-charger, it wasn't. These are regular rates in Europe. Earlier this year I paid 35ct a kWh for my household. Starting this months my rates got increased to 70ct a kWh.

            Anonymous

Those are rates for fast charging which people only really use on road trips. They charge cars in 20 minutes at 400-800v pushing anywhere between 100kw to 350kw
They use external inverters the size of cars, bypassing the car's on board inverter, and also have idling fees

Street chargers are regular 240v outlets and you often need a permit from the city to use them, same as street parking so people who don't live on the street can't use them
They charge at 3kw to 7kw overnight, typically cost you standard utility rates, and don't have idling fees

            Anonymous

I looked up more current prices, it's 45ct for normal charging and 70ct for fast charging. Article was a week old.

That chart is missing a row-- city bus

According to a study for the American Public Transportation Association, loaded weights of 40 foot, two axle transit buses range between 30,000 to 44,000 pounds.

Using the formula from the chart, a bus that weights 40,000 lbs loaded, does as much damage to the road as 10,000 cars.

Sure, but not even the most dedicated public transportation guy suggesta trains everywhere. Buses would still be needed for less used routes/smaller towns.

this was always going to happen. all the benefits that EV cucks use as selling points will fade away once the majority of the population is driving them, or in this case, still not even remotely an EIGHTH of it. for their next trick, anywhere that still has free EV charging will become paid, making them essentially gas stations where you "refuel" for an hour or more

It was to incentivize people to buy them. In Norway you didn't pay sales tax on them for some years, basically took out 50% of the cost. Probably why they are so popular there.
It's funny that many lefties supported it, as it's basically tax cuts for the richer people.

synthetic fuels use far more energy than EV and their batteries, it won't make sense for the average person to bother with them. And you lose the convenience of charging at home
synthetic fuels will only really be used by rich people to drive their old Porsches and Ferraris, because $20+ per gallon is nothing to them
