How would one go about properly converting a Smarttv to a dumb tv, or better yet buying one? The fact that retailers sell only spyboxes designed to sell your data is... BULLSHIT.

don't add it to your network.
take the streamer/pc of your choice and connect it via hdmi.
I stopped buying TVs because of all the smart shit and the fact you could get a fantastic monitor instead. Helps that I don't watch terrestrial TV and only stream shit too.
Simply do not connect it to the internet. You can set up an offline server for your media using Kodi or jellyfin or a combo of both and not use anything internet relate.
If I am wrong, don't modern tvs now require an active network or they don't boot?
No, they don't, as far as I know. However, such a nightmarish scenario isn't far off. I think TCL has a unit that fits that description, IIRC.
Some recent TVs won't leave the "setup" page unless you add a streaming/tv account. You're effectively locked out of all controls, including choosing an input source.
Obviously this important bit is left out in all TV reviews because normies don't care about that shit.
The good news is that most smart TVs can be hacked and modded to install your own software and make it a Kodi/OSMC android TV with no spying/malware (maybe)
Do you have any guides on how to do this? Does it vary heavily by model / manufacturer?
Weeping Angel, made by the CIA and leaked out.
You are better off asking reddit, LULZ isn't buying new tvs every year but they are. Anything for goyslop consumerism, I go there.
It does vary by brand and model, but the more well known brands have more people trying to hack/mod them, just like with phones.
Usually the process involves copying some firmware files onto a USB and plugging it into the TV, then forcing the TV to boot/install a firmware update over USB.
Even if you don't connect it, they're spying and transmitting the data through radiowaved that are amplified by your other electronics
You mean through analog signals?
Don't give it internet access? It's a TV it still turns on if it doesn't have internet access. Although it might piss and moan about not having internet access.
A LCD monitor is a dumb TV
Take the projector pill
Most "smart" TVs have a setting buried in their options menu that lets them boot into the last input it was on. Turn that setting on, then never connect it to the internet and you've got a lobotomized TV.
I vaguely recall something about how tvs made for commercial purposes (like as display signs in a business) don't have all that crap but I don't know any specifics or if they are lacking other things
Same, not sure how to buy them.
Yeah but gaming monitors only go up to 32"
It's for a sunny living room.
commercial tvs
Most smart TVs are just 3 boards. Power, Main IO/display, and the wifi. Just tear the wifi out. Or just tear everything out but the power and replace it with one of those universal boards.
