Driving cars short distances in winter

This winter i’ll be driving my ‘98 camry a half mile to work everyday. Temps will get to -20 degrees fahrenheit. How fricked will my car be?

-20 turns everything into a chore, specially with how needing to layer up restricts free movement.
Also lol welcome to being sick all the time.

Do yourself a favor and get a block heater. Will save your engine from accelerated wear, you’ll have heat in the car sooner and be easier on your starter/battery. If you can’t do that, maybe once you’re off work go for a longer drive to get everything up to operating temp.

      >block heater
is good advice for any temp consistently below ~15F

Change your oil very often despite using the best synthetic and a nice extended life filter, clean oil is best oil, and it's cheaper than a motor.

      >change oil very often
      Not necessary.

It will wear approximately the same amount in that half mile as it would if you were driving 50 miles. Longer drives also have a cold start period so it's not like the short distance is hurting it. Make sure you use a thin enough oil.

The only difference is that vehicle usage is normally tracked by miles, and you're going through many more cold starts per mile. Maybe shorten the life expectancy as measured in miles, but not as measured in number of days.

Also, shouldn't a Camry that old be pretty much considered disposable by now? Use it as long as you can but don't fret over "abuse" as long as it gets the job done.

      >in that half mile as 50
      lmfao

While it's true that the first mile causes as much wear as the next five,
All you need is block heater like anon said, or just let the lil fricker warm for at least 3 minutes.

And if you're really scared about the oil, look up Pfarm's oil reviews, not for any scientific purpose, but just to see how below-freezing 5- and 10- w grades function at those temps.
It's really not a serious killer, a block heater solves all of those problems, and letting the car idle for 3-5 solves most of it.

Facts not fiction people. We have big frickoff smaet parts in our brain. Facts not fears.

Champ if someone is talking about a half mile they aren't talking about celsius. -20C would be -4f, which for the human body (or a bloodoil machine) is a different world

          >i wear a hoody and shorts all year in temps lower than that
Walking around like that in -20 is the furthest thing from comfort or tolerability, gtfo you mind parasite.

I knew you were using F... -20f is still not cold and is actually comfy as long as the humidity and wind are low. -40f is still comfy in shorts and a hoodie once you train your body to handle it. I used to work outside most of the day in that shit.

the pair of you are both wronr about temperature/clothing. no one is wearing fricking shorts in -20 (f or C), and if they are, they're expending an obscene amount of energy keeping themselves warm, and yet are still moronic to risk frostbite. the only person "restricted" by layers doesn't know how to fit clothing properly and thinks their down parka is supposed to be fitted over a tshirt. -20f is perfectly bearable if you're dressed correctly and are moving somewhat consistently. the only annoyance would be shuffling through several feet of snow the whole way, which is more tiresome than impossible

        t. lives somewhere that's regularly -30c and had lots of wind

I went to Alaska a couple weeks ago for work and so many vehicles had block heaters it was crazy. I'm used to only seeing that on diesel trucks. Not having one in negative 20 degree weather is moronic.

I got to experience my 7.3 not wanting start when I was up in Wyoming. It was 0 or just below, it might have started if I cranked longer but I could hear the batteries getting weak. Plugged it in for a couple of hours and it spun right over. I totally get block heaters for all vehicles in those temps

coolant temp isn't the same as what's going on in your crankcase and galleys, but ye a big fat iron block motor needs some coaxing. Our company mech reminds people every year to let the telehandlers idle for 5 minutes when it gets below 50 and 5-10min when it's in the low 40s high 30s.

            >coolant temp isn't the same as what's going on in your crankcase and galleys
If I went by that I'd never go anywhere in the winter. I put an oil pressure gauge in mine since dodge uses a dummy switch.

            Anonymous

Oh yeah it takes a while to get up to temp even in the 40s like you mentioned. It does have the exhaust back pressure valve on the hot side of the turbo to help the engine warm up quicker but it’s more of a pain in the ass because it chokes the engine basically. It closes up at idle and under part throttle restricting the exhaust if the oil/coolant is under a certain temp, truck feels line a dog when it’s closed.

reduce oil weight to a 0w30 or 0w20

viscosity becomes your enemy at these low ambient temperatures and if you're not even reaching operating temperature then you should run even lower viscosity.

block heaters are bae and they even make magnetic ones that go onto your oil pan instead of the typical casting plug style that could be expensive to install, there are also really dumb ones that you can splice into your lower rad hose, but they seem they would be inefficient at warming the engine?

store it indoors or cover it if you can, ice is a bastard

that said its a fricking half mile. you're going to be sitting in your car waiting for it to defrost longer than youll be walking.

      OK BOOMER

Frick off with the "change oil every 3 seconds" meme. I've never changed an oil sooner than the recommended interval and have never had a major mechanical failure of an engine or transmission ever. In fact, the only failures I've ever had effectively amount to damaged wiring. Everything else has been normal wear parts like brake pads, tires, etc.

        Anonymous

Call me a boomer as well because the saying is quite true; oil is cheap, engines are not. If you’re going to be working your engine hard or doing short trips like op mentioned, it’s cheap insurance to change the oil sooner. To each their own really, but it’s usually recommended by manufacturers to change your oil sooner if you’re in extreme conditions or work your vehicle hard

an engine that sees daily use for longer than 15-30 mins would still last longer than one that does repeated short trips + italian tune up.

Explain how driving for 2 minutes hurts the car more than driving for 20 minutes. The first 2 minutes of the 20 minute drive are the same as if that was the entire distance.

        Anonymous

Oil is designed to retain moisture with the condensation inside the engine.
As the engine warms up, the moisture is burned away in the hot oil.

If your engine never gets up to temp, the moisture keeps building up. Then you get into internal corrosion issues and increased bearing wear.

Yes which is exactly the point I'm making. Engines take longer to warm up in the winter, meaning that water will never be expunged and will collect in the oil, crankcase, and exhaust system and basically destroy the entire thing.

Engine never gets up to temp, moisture builds up in the oil, oil degrades and stops lubricating properly, everything that spins begins to wear prematurely. Cold starts at super low temps are murder on engines. That’s even before captain kangaroo here decides to immediately throw it in drive and get up to highway speed for half a mile before shutting it down.

Theres no good reasons to drive car that short distance, only total idiots avoid walking like plague. You must walk occasionally every week to prevent prematurely destroying your own body condition and making yourself physically weaker than average 70 year old guy before you reach 40+ year old age. I would understand driving if walking everyday takes more time than 17 minutes.

Whatever you need to tell yourself to feel like a real man for not having a car you can drive at will. Imagine being this furious about other people not wanting to scale 12 foot mountains of snow in the winter, burning up a large portion of what little daylight there is during that time of year.
I'm just gonna drive, I hope this absolutely infuriates you. Now I'm gonna start doing it more in the warmer parts of the year as well because I know that you are ripping your hair out over someone using their own property how they like.

The only way it won't be downright destructive to your engine is if you use a block heater and heat up the car prior to driving it and when you leave work you drive around for a bit longer before going home
