they're actually getting better, but better in this case means sounding like avril lavigne

Absolutely blatant and unashamed trend chasers. All style, no substance.

I have to ask genuinely, what trend were they chasing with Television Romance?

The 1975 were at the peak of their popularity around then. Their record label, Dirty Hit, signed Pale Waves to try and capitalize further on that sound. Television Romance sounds like a dead ringer for a The 1975 song, but without any of the songwriting chops.

I see, I never learned any of that type of stuff because I just listen to music I like and don't really give much thought to the artist beyond, "Who sings/performs this?"

Okay, but I was a huge fan of The 1975 back then, and when I first heard Television Romance (without knowing any of that information) I thought "wow, this sounds like a soulless The 1975 ripoff". Lo and behold...

So you are saying like what happened in this video basically happened? They got a female to play what they wanted? Would a record label do that, just try to capitalize off females?

                Yes

Television Romance is literally just this but with a female lead

                Exactly

What do you think literally means?

It's literally that but with a female lead

No, it is very similar, but it isn't literally the same song with a female lead. When I hear that I expect a word for word beat for beat recreation.
