Yes if you're playing fast competitive shooters like CS/valorant, or games that require high reaction speed like osu! You'll want ideally 240hz+ and a GPU that can output that many frames

No if you're just watching movies, or anime or viewing pictures. 60hz is enough for those.

Although not required you'll want around 144hz (best price/performance before diminishing returns) for a buttery smooth UI experience and non blurry scrolling on font while reading, or browsing the internet, or using various applications

Forgot to add, most AAA games are fine at 60hz, unless they're a first person shooter. Most games should be fine at 60hz unless there's alot of movement where the high refresh rate could help out

      >you're just watching movies, or anime or viewing pictures. 60hz is enough for those.
Wrong. You need 120hz so your player doesn't fuck with the frames
      120/24 = 5
60/24 = 2.5 (some frames lasts longer than they should)

or better still, a display that has a 23.976hz mode

You should add that 240 hz helps when you are already capable of clicking heads at 60hz
Trash players will stay trash even on 240hz
The investment makes sense only if you are already the 1% of good players. Otherwise it's placebo for trash players

lack of tearing is a benefit even trash players can appreciate though, i chased the hz dragon as high as 360 then switched to an ultrawide oled 175hz. wonder what that 1080p500 asus monitor is like

yes for esport and VR otherwise it's pretty disappointing and worthless.
I jumped from 60 to 180 and sure scrolling and games are smoother but it's not that impressive either.
triple the energy consumption for barely any gain...
I was in the framerate camp when I was on 60Hz projecting how 144+ would change my life as I've heard from the braindead coomsumers who jump on new tech as they're out but now I'm more into the display quality team and framerate above 60 does not matter one bit anymore.
once qd-oled are cheap enough I'll get one no matter the framerate.
and yes, i've checked the settings multiple times and 180Hz (lg 27GP850-B) with dp 1.4 and hdmi 2.0 cables, I also have a pixel 7 and 90Hz, while noticeable, is even more worhtless.
I also have perfect vision as of last month, last time I got my eyes checked.

This is basically the same as asking whether you need more than 128kbps AAC for music, it's going to vary wildy for everyone because we're not clones of each other. Most people unironically see flashing LEDs as continuous illumination sources which flicker on and off at 120Hz. The problem isn't in your eyes which can theoretically "see" at infinite FPS, it's in your brain which has to process electrical signals from your eyeballs before the information goes to your conscious self. That takes time and some people have brains which do this quickly or slowly.

protip: the LED lights in your house are probably turning on and off 120 times per second

Not unless you gayme. I've been rocking a 165Hz monitor for awhile now and 60Hz still looks fine. Obviously I can tell a difference but I'd be completely fine if I had to use a 60Hz screen. For anything besides gaming (productivity work or web browsing or whatever) it literally doesn't make a difference. Hence why I always lol at phones with high refresh rate screens.
