can you even hand off just ~22GB of VRAM to it and still have a stable-ish system?

It's just a process with less privileges, it's not a virtual machine.

doesn't this at least give more resources via the kernel than a normal dummy account

It's just cgroups, the process is practically identical to any other you have on yoir machine

The why does it need a fucking daemon? Its trying to eat my init system.

It doesn't if you use podman

Because it was designed for servers. The daemon runs on the server and you issue RPC commands to start/stop containers on the server.

Sorta a one node precursor to K8s.

It's even worse because the docker daemon runs as root.
You could get pwn'd by mounting a wrong directory.

        it just werks
        it's fast
you don't have to spend hours installing dev shit with colliding dependencies on your system, just press enter, and it's all there, working flawlessly
it's also very well written and documented

i used gentoo for 4 months and i realized it's bullshit and for NEETs who browse the web and watch anime all day while not getting anything done
now i use debian + xmonad + emacs
and you say not a real linux user?
i know more about GNU/Linux systems than you ever will
it's not about lack of knowledge, it's about comfort and predictability

              i use debian too
i dont see why i should use this stupid shit bloat crap that always si downloading hundreds of gigs from some place i don't really trust that much

                i use docker for ai
do i want to install untrusted le data science packages to my host system? no
i wrote a script which sets up pytorch, opencv and all the ai shit and then use that as a base image for ai things
you don't trust it, that's the whole point to run in seperated, in a system
i press an enter on any system and boom, i'm ready to work on my AI project
                no installing anything, no bullshit
this retarded perspective is for NEETs
                >um no, pls don't install anything on my system, i don't trust them, I'll write my own instead
good luck writing your own nvidia driver, tensorflow, keras, pytorch, opencv, python, and many thousands of ml projects for a program that should be shipped in a month, because of LE TRUST and NO DOCKER autism

Ok i see your point maybe w.r.t. AI, python package Management is sheer cancer, but why not just a venv. Cuda binaries?
Does it really work out for that shit?

                Anonymous

idk you could use venv if you want, but i want it to not even see my system, to run completely seperated
also with venvs you can't use overlayfs so you would have to download the same file more than once and it's cancer
nvidia/cuda image is nice, it's ubuntu based, so it's easy to use and just werks also includes nvcc and cudnn
it worked for me, i enjoy using it, so i love it
                simple as

that is neat if i can move my stuff directly to some a100s for a few days or week as needed

i use it for development on my own pc too, yes
and yes, as you said the nice thing is that you can easily move it to the cloud, so no pain and wasted money
