Depends on how dead the battery is. You might not even be able to start it. If you can, then you don't have to let it run overnight. You should learn how to use a multimeter. Takes the guesswork out of it.

I used a jump starter to start it, but it's not holding in the charge. I left it running for 45 min (but had the ac on), didn't work either. What do?

You can spend $100 on a new battery or you can have the seller knock $1000 off the price because the car won't start...

Because you murdered the battery by leaving it dead for months like a moron. it's completely fricked and the plates are sulfated.

Lead acid batteries get killed when you let them sit at a real low charge for an extended period of time. No amount of idling the car will ever bring it back.

        Anonymous

        >I used a jump starter to start it, but it's not holding in the charge.

When lead acid batteries drop below about 30%, the chance of sulfation increases based on temperature but light sulfation can be reversed because the thinly sulfated spots aren't much thicker than the less sulfated spots (recharge current competition). When it drops below 20% and the trickle current continues to use the battery along with its normal self-discharge, the sulfation gets too thick in most areas. Recharging won't reverse it since most of the recharge current flows through the few small thin spots and ignores flowing thru the thickly sulfated spots (competition). Since your battery capacity is based on the good spots not covered up, the battery feels like it no longer holds much of a charge.

Once a battery gets deeply sulfated, not even those digital chargers with their high-frequency reverse polarity pulses mixed with proper polarity pulses can knock off enough of the sulfate molecules in the thick spots. You need to replace the battery and not sulfate it again.

You need reliable people to recharge the battery once every 2 weeks with one of those cheap schumacher brand digital chargers from walmart. Not that you don't trust someone with access to the car, but in modern cars, you can set "Teen Driver Mode" via the PIN code and limit the car to a max speed of 85 MPH, zero radio volume, and of course turn its GPS route recording on to track the car's speed and wherever it went to.
        https://www.jdpower.com/cars/shopping-guides/what-is-teen-driver-technology

        https://gmauthority.com/blog/gm/general-motors-technology/gm-safety-technology/gm-active-safety-technology/general-motors-teen-driver-technology/

Teen Driver Mode generates a Report Card with map, so no one can lie about where/how the car was used. It even records panic stops, sloppy driving such as riding the line, how many times they tailgate, or how often they exceed a certain speed warning that you set.

Just get your battery tested at an autoparts store. They do it for free. Your alternator isn't actually designed to charge the battery from completely flat. It CAN do it, but slowly AF. If you have access to one, hook it up to a dedicated battery charger and then have it tested.

I don't have a charger, the tank is full but I am selling it tomorrow so what's the point of keeping the gas in?

I will try to get it tested today then. The main thing is my flight is tonight at 11pm and they are coming to pick up the car at 10am and don't have any other appointments for the rest of the day today

Walmart sells car batteries if you can get there. Jump that b***h and go drive it to Walmart right now, change the battery in the parking lot. Get the cheapest budget one they have that fits your car.

Or don’t worry about it. If you’re doing Carvana or something, I’m sure this isn’t the first time they needed to jump a car because the owner hasn’t used it in the past few months. Tow trucks always have jumper cables or a booster pack, As long as it runs fine with a jump, they shouldn’t beat you up unless there’s some gay clause in the agreement.

Do you really think so? It works just fine with after being jumped. It's 4:09am so walmart is closed rn, but the nearest walmart is 40 min drive for me

Yeah dude, call them and ask a little before, or frickin jump the car 30min before it shows up. It’s not uncommon to sell a car that hasn’t been driven in 3mos and now has a flat battery and the tow truck is always going to have a way to jump the thing if needed.

Yea I found this stupid post https://www.reddit.com/r/carvana/comments/mv3wru/selling_my_car_battery_down/

            >reddit

That’s probably some gay Carvana shit to stop people from selling a car with a bad alternator or other issues and claiming it’s just a flat battery.

If the battery isn’t 100% dead, maybe you can let it run for a couple hours in the morning and if you shut it off 5min before the tow truck pulls up, you may be able to start it again without a jump. Depends how dead the thing is.

I just went to check up on the car and idling seems to have worked for now. I turned if off and then the car started without having to jump it.

Should I buy another battery or just risk it and present the car lol?

            Anonymous

You're probably fine then... Start it 45 min before the truck comes and shut it off 5 minutes before it comes. It'll start long enough to load it up.

idling worked, the battery became fine again. I bought the car in 2020 for 17200 and sold today for 21600. Thanks for your help
