Choronzon is the you that you think you are. The voice in your head that tells you what to do.

No, gay sex was Crowley's real downfall
    >He and Neuberg were on their way down the mount when Crowley suddenly was seized with the inspiration to perform a homosexual magic ritual with Neuberg and dedicate it to the Greek god of nature, Pan. They went back to the top of the mount, inscribed in the sand a magic circle protected with names and words of power, and made a crude stone altar. Crowley took the submissive role in the sexual act as a way of eliminating ego. The ritual marked a turning point for him in his view of the importance of sex in magic; he now saw it as a beneficial sacrament.

Literally this, he wasn't possessed and turned into a dark brother. He was a sex degen drug addict and his actions caught up with him. He realized it was all bullshit but kept it up until he died

Choronzon/the abyss is just existential dread and that inner battle of "this is fake" when practicing magic

Maybe at the beginning. You should be getting over the “what if this is fake” hurdle early on, if you’re doing things right. Unless you have a tendency to lie to yourself about other things, in which case no matter how much proof of magic you experience, you have to fix that defect of the ego before attaining confidence in your spiritual practice.

he did not fail. those who fail against choronzon drown in the abyss and become desillusioned at best, insane at worst.

the abyss is filled with all your greatest fears and monstrosities. to cross the abyss is to let go of your fears and doubts.

it has a very tricky and double meaning. you realize that it is all part of you, that you create your reality and its magic. so it is at once disbelief and belief. it is fake objective reality. the true lie. the battle that is both lost and already won. a glimpse of nothingness. self-deceptive perception.

so, in that manner, Crowley beat choronzon and crossed the abyss, only to become a dark brother. logic nor feeling is useless here.

Do. The ritual clearly states that succumbing to the influence of Choronzon and stepping out of the magic circle or allowing him to penetrate it will result in your soul leaving your viscera to go on to become a tapeworm of the abyss. If he failed, we would never have heard from him again. The story would have been that Crowley and Neuberg must have gotten lost in the desert and likely died of dehydration or heat stroke.
