Did anyone have it worse than Japanese soldiers during WW2?

>Overall, perhaps two thirds of all Japanese military dead (2.1 million) came not from combat, but from starvation and disease. In some cases this figure was potentially even higher, up to 80% in the Philippines and a staggering 97% in New Guinea.
Imagine being stranded in some jungle in the middle of the Pacific, knowing that there will be no support or resupply, subsisting on maggoty rice and muddy water, and slowly wasting away from malnutrition and tropical diseases. Most IJA soldiers were essentially killed by the US Navy.

How did they even hold those territories if they were starving?

The Allies just bypassed most of them. Japan still had a huge swath of Asia nominally under their control at the war's end.

        >Bonin Islands
Iirc those are islands where they speak an English Japanese creole language created by American whalers and Japanese fisherman intermingling.

Somehow I don't believe that. The Americans would have 100% demanded Hirohito's deposition or death if MacArthur hadn't been in charge of the occupation

That would have resulted in a lot of Jap chimpouts. Remember how smoothly removing Sadaam and not replacing him with any sort of continuity went for Iraq.

I am sorry that that happened to your grandfather. May he rest in peace. I’m curious, what country was he fighting for? And if you are able and willing, could you tell us more about your grandfather?

They created their own hell in New Guinea by abusing and murdering the locals instead of using the Aussie-American strategy of giving them free shiny baubles in exchange for food and help. Japs slaughtered the fuzzy-wuzzies instead of trying to form a symbiosis. They also fricked up the same way in the Philippines and in Burma.
