i've only listened to three of their albums so far and i like Are We Not Men and Freedom of Choice quite a bit. however, Oh No, It's Devo is pretty aggressively mediocre (perfectly parodied by "dare to be stupid" by weird al, by the way).
their goofy wardrobe aside, where have the chips fallen on the devo question? i have to admit there is a charm to their early 80s dweebwave aesthetic so maybe that's where my confusion lies.
i love Oh No! It's Devo personally. more than their early post-punk stuff even.
(i also kinda enjoy the late 80's/early 90's Enigma stuff but that's another argument for another day)
>OMG DEVO!!!!!!!!! IT WAS ABSOLUTELY FUNKO POP AND SZECHUAN SAUCE TIER EPIC WHEN THEY MADE ONIONSROCK AND STALE SYNTHPOP FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME!!!!!! FUCK PERE UBU!!! I’M A HECKIN JOCKO HOMO XD
i normally hate wojak posts but shoutout to Pere Ubu.
Listen to Duty Now, the Hardcore Volumes, Devo Live: The Mongoloid Years, and probably Hardcore Live as well
Scower soulseek for old pre-1980 live recordings if you want more
listen to these posters
hardcore devo vol 1+2 and their debut album are god tier
i like egg punk but Devo kind of sucks
This album totally mogs all of their studio output and is probably the best representation of their original creative vision, along with the demos, short films and live footage from the early years.
wait does this have the one where they pretended to be a Bad Company cover band so they could open for Sun Ra and completely disrupt the show by playing for way too long?
Yes, it's wonderful
it's great catchy weird pop music, at least until Shout (more like Shit)
Oh No also would've been better if they included Part Of You, Find Out and Faster and Faster
I also combine the best songs from Something (Else) for Everybody into one good 40 minute album
is mind games one of the good tracks from SFE in your opinion?
yeah, I'm trying to remember the songs, it's been a while
fresh, watch us work it, on the inside, monsterman, human rocket, throw money at the problem
yeah it's been a while
oh yeah and this is the only good song from shout
sounds like crash bandicoot music
He did compose the PS1 Crash games after all
They’re both. Now Oingo Boingo, that is pure cringe.
early devo >>>>> all of oingo boingo any day of the week
People from Akron Ohio are obsessed. There's even a Devo exhibit at the Rock Hall of Fame
they have a fan convention called the DEVOtional in Cleveland every year. I considered going this year but I passed on it.
Why is so wrong for bands too be goofy and don't take themselves seriously
I used to get them confused with Duran Duran, then I realize Duran Duran is actually good.
They're dangerously based
Hating devo just means you didn't get it
Same as Pixies, I prefer their later works to their more lauded earlier works.
New Traditionalists is my favorite of theirs. Oh no and Shout are good too. You can take the best songs from Total Devo and Smooth Noodle Maps and make one great album. Something for everybody is the same, you can take the best songs from that with the best songs from the Something else for everybody album and make one great album.
Freedom of Choice was their creative peak and Oh No its DEVO was their musical peak. Shout is unlistenable, Total Devo has its moments, and Smooth Noodle Maps has its moments.
>Freedom OF choice is what you got...Freedom FROM choice is what you want.....
How do you get into Shout? I honestly cant stand the fairlight cmi sounds and the pitch-shift sampling that shows up on every single track
i'm into stuff with fairlight like ryuichi sakamoto, etc. so hearing it on shout is fine to my ears.
Beautiful World is criminally underrated. Limo libs RATM covered it poorly. Chris Cornell covered Girl U Want. DEVO is legit
>ugly dudes with stained teeth in their late 30s playing punk
Certainly cringe and I hate this new wave sound and the type of city-dwelling weasel that enjoys it with passion
if you think devo is cringe you just don't understand how many levels of irony they're on...
Great wired pop band with a brilliant message about de-evolution.
