Still miles better than anything else. Protonmail is about the same. Mail is flawed by design and lazy users. Both ends need to encrypt. Tutanota is a grear alternative if you don't like to have companies spy on your data and sell it.

You picrels always post the same shit in psg.
SMTP is very insecure, and that's something no mail provider can fix for inter-domain emails.
It's nowhere near the levels of gmail, yahoo, etc.
The most secure option is the self host, with a computer you have _physical_ control over.

How hard is it to self host? People here talk about it like it’s the hardest thing in the world.

Don't fall for the self hosted mail meme, I fell for it 5 years ago and it was so fucking bad, first of all, all your sent emails will go directly into the spam folder.
You will have to constantly keep fixing errors, it was a fucking nightmare to keep it up, and if your server is down / your internet stops working when a mail is sent to you, you will never get it.
Nightmarish, anything but self hosted, don't fall for the meme like I did.

Why not put it on a vps?

What's the point of self hosting then if you don't even have physical control over your server? At that point just get a cock.li mail

Self hosting email can be pretty annoying at first, since many providers view my emails as spam (friends and family sometimes have to mark me as a trusted address). Reliability used to be an issue, but it gradually improved over time with lots of work.
It's flawed, but I like the control. I have even gotten some friends to use my service.
Self hosting other things, such as a website, or ftp server, is pretty easy.

What did you do to improve reliability

Mostly just setting up two other servers aside from the original one, although I had to use a service for that and gave up physical control.

      >Pfau also added that in June the Hannover Regional Court had struck down a lower district court's ruling that Tutanota was to be backdoored. While angry police workers reportedly threatened to attack Pfau, sending him menacing emails promising to abduct him from his home and throw him into "provisional detention" unless he obeyed their orders, the regional court dismissed the district court's ruling – leaving police powerless to follow through.

having an email provider separate from the big tech companies is a good idea, especially if you pay for it. at least it gives you more flexibility if you want to ditch any of the larger tech companies for any reason. feels good to not be tied down to google/gmail/googleshit now. later on if i change my mind on apple, i could always go back to android. or if i hate both of them, i could just use any android phone without logging into google, and just use the browser for everything.

Yeah, my phone is just a phone with maps, it is insane how much your day slows down without notifications and constant fiddling with small touch screens. You quickly realize how annoying and stressful the very presence of devices really is. I'm still thinking how and what to do with the workflow and setup. Currently shitposting with a shit tablet, and I guess other than listening to some pods and reading I do nothing on it. Is a Rasp pi a good setup?

Oh no delusions. It's more the feeling of not needing it to do more than just mail. Anyways 99% of the mail are just order and payment confirmations

I've been using runbox for going on 20 years now and this doesn't happen. Most web hosting plans also come with free email that's preset for you, which also allows you to receive mail at a vanity domain.
