I'm pretty sure they're just looking at what people have in their checking account and aren't considering that most people have many thousands in savings to draw upon as well as stock/bond portfolios worth tens of thousands and upwards.
I live in Ausfailia, have $75k AUD in the bank in savings, and work a very average working class job. Most of my colleagues have a lot more stashed away than I do, so I can only deduce that these news articles that come out semi-frequently are either complete myths or clickbait. Likely both.
