We are local/municipal police. Most, if not all of us live in the city we work in, so we don't really go "undercover" in the sense of having a false identity and working it. We do assist in a lot of Federal and State investigations however that do involve officers/detectives who are UC, but it's usually for short periods until there's enough evidence to make a bust.
The most "undercover" we do is just blending into the crowd and following people.

Actually not being able to conduct controlled buys makes building enough evidence to make a case significantly harder.
The downside is that we have to buy drugs, and the money we use to buy drugs generally goes towards the dealers and back into the illicit money flow.
The department's new method of simply arranging a buy somewhere, waiting for the plug to show up and staging a traffic stop actually make it much more dangerous for the informants.
