Fun fact: most people don't give a shit about history.
Other fun fact: when I ask people about Constantine like a sperg most who do know something about him say he was a Holy Roman Emperor. Which in a way isn't wrong but...well I assume you can figure out why that isn't right.

He was only baptized on his deathbed

It's not a testament to his character but this is evidence that his belief was genuine more than it isn't imo. If it was all a lie and he was just doing it for reasons of gaining power...what's the point when you know you're going to die relatively soon?

it could still be political. it could all be heresy

            >Constantine might not have patronized Christianity alone. A triumphal arch was built in 315 to celebrate his victory in the Battle of the Milvian Bridge which was decorated with images of the goddess Victoria, and sacrifices were made to pagan gods at its dedication, including Apollo, Diana, and Hercules. Absent from the arch are any depictions of Christian symbolism.

Again, why? He had nothing to lose by not doing it, probably could even have created a rumor that he was too sick to. Or in case he was worried about his legacy that he was going to but death caught up too swiftly to him.

maybe he had a play involving some adopted heir that never panned out, who knows

It couldn't have been political. For comparison Constantine converting to Christianity for popular appeal would be like Macron converting to Islam. The Roman Empire had the same proportion of Christians as modern France does Muslims. It would not have been a popular move, it would be the exact opposite of politically motivated.

Then again maybe he saw the writing on the wall and knew Rome becoming a Christian state was just as inevitable as France becoming a Muslim one today.

His mother was Christian. At the time, was spreading like wildfire
But there was no central authority of any type, and Constantine was of questionable moral character
Besides being both pagan and Christian, poisoned his own son and boiled the step-mother to death
His mother wouldn't stop haranguing him about it until he died

that was intentional as when you are baptised all your sins are washed away so it makes sense to do it as late as possible

It’s kind of amazing. Christianity is the biggest religion in the world yet Constantine is hardly remembered (even by the average Christian) for helping it spread.

More amazing is that people can go their whole life without asking why something is the way it is. Have they never asked why Christianity became so widespread? How is that possible?

That film has nothing to do with Konstantinos ho Megas, it's about a comic book character who is named John Constantine.

I prefer Theodosius I, last good emperor from unified empire and officially making Christianity main religion.

There was a video asking TiK Tokers who Constantine is and nearly everyone thought of Constantine from the movie instead of the historical figure.
