For me, it’d probably be $100~ 1TB microSD cards.

Crazy how gaming on Linux is as easy as running games on windows for like 90% of games.

While linux has come a long way with gaming, It has a long way to go. Games do work, but they each have there own annoyances, problems that don’t exist on windows 10 or they just don’t work at all. Off the top of my head of games that have problems/worse performance/don’t work. fallout new vegas, fallout 3, payday 2, arma 3, dayz, dead by daylight, RS6, apex legends, valorant. Even the cherry picked CSGO are disingenous because while you do get higher FPS, It’s more unstable and you have more frame drops and lower 0.1%’s on linux.

i think the steam deck will change these opinions as time goes on. they could have went with windows, but they decided to throw employees time (money) into developing a linux console. the proton github repo was only recently made at `2018-03-13T18:45:27Z’ and its affect on compatibility has been incredible since.

i think we’re only going up.

your points seem more like quirks than it seeming Linux isnt even half way there, which you are implying.
the largest vidya retailer, valve, made the steam deck, which wouldnt even be a dream if it really had a long way to go
like if Linux was still trash for games, then it would have elicited laughs if anyone proposed Arch Linux instead of Windows to build their own console. Yet it had millions upon millions of money invested, and got sold out several times

the most interesting part is I recently tried playing on xubuntu on a 2012 amd laptop and it generally worked, speed was ass but everything worked. Unity games work fine and almost without bugs. I tried out Oxygen Not Included and 7 Days to Die and the performance was surprisingly solid (wouldn’t play at those speeds though).
This could potentially get a little more juice out of old technology, which would be very cool because you could get 2016 laptops to play vidya in low to mid settings.

on paper, but unlike your scrotebrained CPU with its extremely long pipeline and extremely low bandwidth efficiency per core means that you’re not doing shit at real time, even if its faster for operations that only need really big numbers.

also a 5950x has nearly the same fp64 thoughput as 10980xe with less cores and it doesn’t even have 512bit FMAs hahahaha

Nothing. Under Capitalism all technology is only used to enslave us.
If we lived in an Anarchist society everything would be open and collaborative, not designed to make us click shit like dumb monkeys, scam our friends, and exhaust ourselves to make scum like Jeff Bezos go into Space once.

        1. Capitalism and Anarchy aren’t mutually exclusive, "an"commie. They are the fullest expressions of one another
        2. Who would make the semiconductors, and who would gather the materials for them for no financial incentive?
        3. There wouldn’t be more technology because you would basically get rid of consumerism. You really didn’t think that through.

can anybody explain to me read/write cycle limits on micro sds? if one has a 10,000 read cycle limit, does that mean i can only use an application 10,000 times before it shits the bed?

Flash memory usually has a write cycle limit, not read.
10000 write cycle limit => the entire capacity can be written over 10000 times
e.g. A 1TB SD card with 1000 cycle limit can basically be written with 1000TB worth of data until the flash memory wears out. However, since they’re so slow, most manufacturers don’t even bother mentioning this spec. SanDisk has a lifetime warranty on most of their consumer stuff.

Amazon blows my mind. The idea that all mom and pop stores including walmart are succumbing to the beast.

Social media would blow my mind and this "algorithm assisted personal computing." Also the insane censorship that comes along with it.

The idea of linux having taken over everything and dominated mobile will have been a shocker.

i remember back in high school ~ 2011 we struggled with facebook groups to communicate between class mates,
if it were to send files, that was an entire struggle all by itself, sms was limited in scope, video calls on phones were just not a thing

In the space of a 3.5" drives you could fit and easily cool 48TB of conventional M.2 NVMe drives… In RAID1 (so 96TB actual storage).
There’s 30TB 2.5" U.3 NVMe drives you can even order online these days. So 20TB HDD at 3.5" is nothing special.

      Greenpass
It was unimaginable to scan a qr-code to work and to access public services.
Modern techonlogy brought us the greenpass giving use hope to fight against this global pandemic.
If the global pandemic started in 2011 many more people would have died
Ah and also vaccines, they developed it pretty fast, but without the qr-code of the greenpass they are useless anyway. The greenpass is here to protect us. I’m so proud of showing my greenpass: I am protecting my self AND the others in this deadly global pandemic every time I show it

Internet penetration even for developing countries is close to 50% already, India being well above that at 65% and Russia being on par with the global average for developed countries at +85%, but I’m pretty sure he was referencing the Starlink program which plans to make internet available globally regardless of location, though it’s still behind a steep paywall.

Except they are fictional characters designed to play on a narrative, something that takes effort to write, voice and present. As opposed to a whore under a filter making a cute voice to lure some losers like you. It’s the equivalent of comparing a super hero movie/HQ to some scrotebrains on a convention.

        Yeah… yeah I guess that’s true…

I’m extremely lucky my intro to vtubers made me immune to getting sucked into this.
I started out watching a Japanese Mario streamer, oshige, who started out with a male Vtuber avatar, and a male voice. Then he switched to a female one and started using a voice changer software, but it was obvious in the early days (but he got better with his voice acting I guess and started fine tuning the software more).
Now I’m eternally cautious that I’m listening to a guy using a voice changing software.

If a Vtuber accidentally reveals their real face, and its a girl streamer, I might get sucked in tho.

          >If a Vtuber accidentally reveals their real face
Likely not to ever happen again since the software has gotten a lot better. The streaming softwares do not reference the webcam, they reference the program referencing the webcam. So if anything happens, alt-F4 or push a button on the streamdeck and avatar vanishes

Smartphones and especially smartphone cameras. 2011 was the age of the Galaxy S2 and iPhone 4s.

Laptop screens. In 2011, 1366×768 TN panels were running rampant.

Also VR. If you told me that in 10 years I will be able to buy a 300$ standalone headset that is actually good, i would’ve called bullshit. I know the quest 2 is subsidized by Facebook fuckery, but still, it’s impressive.

Why is a 1TB microSD card so small when an M2 SSD is like 15 times larger.
I know that m2 SSDs have RAM chips on it to make it very fast, but still, why do they need their own board when a microSD card can store as much on a little chip the size of a nail.

        Guest

        Because:
        1) a SSD using the same density as MicroSd card woud make it grossly expensive.

        2) SSDs are way more resilient to wear, physical damage and electric noise.

        3) MicroSds speeds (about 90 Mbps) are NOT in the same category even than SSDs m.k.1 (700-1000 Mbps), to m.k.2 (easily 7 Gbps) they are 2 orders of magnitude apart

        4) if microsds want to become faster they also need to have a longer read/write life wich in turn would make them bigger, ad then the power managment even bigger and so on

Majority of new SSDs slow the way fuck down after you exhaust the SLC cache, sometimes even slower than these SD Cards.

I’d be astounded that everyone in society has a pocket computer with as much power as my 2000s desktop computer. I would also be disturbed that everyone is constantly staring at their pocket computer when they are out and about, since that didn’t really start (by my recollection) until around 2013 or so. 2011 still had normal social interactions by comparison.

Incidentally, I knew someone who did peace corps around this time, and they were weirded out by that exact thing. It went from "oh yeah one person I know has an iphone" to "everyone is using and staring at a smartphone all of the time in public" pretty quickly (like 2011 to 2014).

10 years ago was 2011 so honestly, nothing. Nothing would impress me. Everything we have now was the same in 2011. Ok, 1TB microsd is cool, but not impressive. It’s like resolution on a monitor, its inevitable they’ll make something with more of x. I won’t be impressed in 10 more years when a microsd has 100TB or my monitor is 32K.
In fact I have extremely high expectations, so if we don’t have brain-interface devices in mass production or a colony on mars already I’ll be extremely let down. Technology is moving too slow for me to be impressed.

Surprised no one here is talking about blockchain tech. Every big tech company is at risk of a decentralized version coming up and rendering their most reputable obsolete. Facebook, Twitter, Uber, all of those could be recreated purely through smartcontracts and eliminate censorship and in Uber’s case, increase the salaries of drivers significantly since there’s no middleman to take their cut.

This thing is the single most impressive things to happen in 10 years.

The fact that not only it launched and succeeded, but the fact that it’s an actual, useful, driveable car, that it’s economically viable and that a lot of people are buying it. And I don’t mean just Tesla, I mean most EV that are produced now. If you said an all-electric vehicle would be viable in 2010, people would call it a fad and call you a looney and joke about having to pull a plug behind you. But here we are, every time I drive, I spot a lot of them in the wild.

Another impressive technology is wireless charging. Not that the tech itself is impressive – we knew about that for years, but the fact that it’s used in consumer applications is impressive.

USB Type-C is another impressive tech. Well, 2011 was a year before Lighning was introduced, but back then the only widespread symmetric connector was the TRS jack. To think that such a simple idea as having a cable you could plug any way was not made earlier actually impresses me.

Bitcoin and crypto price and popularity, too. Back when I heard of it, in my wildest dreams I thought it would reach the price of like 100-300$ and could be used as a universal currency, but as of now it’s a huge asset with 5-digit values, and there is a myriad of crypto trying to mimic it’s success.

Honestly the most interesting thing is cheap drones and actual VR headsets (of which I’ve never tried one because they are prohibitively expensive in my country).
Large monitors were already affordable in 2011 and cellphones peaked in 2015 just to become enormous bricks full of googleshit (yeah yeah rooting, whatever. You can’t root the 6.5" size out of the devices though).
I’d be kinda impressed at AMD’s performance, but that’s just an incremental update and it would be actually kind of underwhelming to see we’re still at something like 8 to 16 cores when 4 core CPUs were already the norm in 2008.

Those things won’t make you happy. You have so many opportunities and "fun" things like the internet, video games, porn, sex/prostitution, television, etc in this life, yet you’re still so unhappy. Maybe instead of filling the void in your life with these useless things that give you fleeting happiness, you should turn to Christ and experience true joy and happiness. He, both fully God and fully man, died on the cross for your sins so that you could have everlasting life with Him. He then came back to life 3 days later and ascended to Heaven. He loves you more than you can ever know, and the best part is, his gift is completely free. All you have to do is accept it and profess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe it in your heart that he died for your sins and that God rose him from the dead, and you’re saved.

You shouldn’t stop there, though. The more you walk with Jesus and try to follow in his footsteps, the happier you’ll become.

I would probably be having a nervous breakdown about the state of society and everyone’s expectations of me and panicking about that virus everyone seems to be talking about. I’d probably just be going along with everything even though it wouldn’t feel right, I don’t even know if I’d stop short of burning Trump supporters’ houses down because I’d be REALLY desperate to feel like I fit in SOMEWHERE.
Oh technology? Google runs everything now? Oh that’s just great, I liked chrome when I passed out, and I couldn’t imagine them doing any social engineering at all!

Impressive from 2011 to 2021? Probably nothing
Nice to have ? Gigabit internet access subscription possible in virtually all cities in my country, mobile internet speed evolution, Linux gaming, cheap 6+ cores CPUs, EVs and as in the OP, 2TB in a such small memory card.
Leaping from 2021 to 2031 would be another thing, I think humanity will face one of the biggest technological setbacks in many aspects by then.

If we are talking consumer technology only, unironically RTX hardware acceleration.

I can’t name a single other thing that’ 10 years ago did not exist at all or seemed unfeasible.
      >SSDs, smartphones, GPUs, CPUs, OLED
Did not undergo any major changes other than predictable price/performance shift.
      >Linux desktop/gaming
Optimistic expectations were actually better than reality turned out to be.

      CRISPR
we created a vaccine in under a year using CRISPR, it has sped up bio-tech by more than 2x
they’re talking about curing a whole host of other diseases using the same technology. it’s going to change how a lot of people live and ten years from now don’t be surprised if most of the major killers in 3rd world countries have disappeared

Gene therapy isn’t a vaccine, and it neither protects you from getting it nor protects you from spreading it. It also has a shitload of horrible and potentially deadly side effects.

they literally used CRISPR to design the vaccine. haven’t been very public about it probably because CRISPR is already a trigger word for anti-vaxtards

Well, don’t get me wrong, me from 2011 would be impressed by the speed of deployment of the current COVID vaccines, but you from now really need to understand that that is bad technology. Every single MRNA or MRNA-in-an-adenovirus shot causes capillary blood clotting and creates damage inflammatory that adds up, especially when you try and wipe out every disease on the planet with it or stick people on a mandatory schedule of getting booster shots every single year.

Even if they were some miracle cure instead of poison that’s slightly less bad for old people than the virus is, you can’t wipe out every virus this way. You can’t wipe out airborne viruses that have animal reservoirs. You can’t wipe out a virus that can still replicate in a part of the body the vaccine in question doesn’t affect. If you try and exterminate a respiratory virus with an injected vaccine people will keep getting infected and transmitting it, it’ll just be confined to their noses, because all the antibodies are in the lungs!
Not only that but it’s up to governments to buy the damn things. They aren’t free or cheap.

anyone talking shit about the vaccine is full of bull

not that I think it’s safe, we just don’t know a whole lot about it. you think it does x? really? we’ve been taking this shit for a whole 9 months now, that’s not enough time to know anything positive or negative

at least vaccinated people aren’t ending up in the hospital as frequently, but even that data is brand spanking new and barely means anything
the only not-scrotebrained anti-vax argument is that we don’t know enough about the side-effects yet. not like that’s stopping the world’s governments that need their citizens to go back to work asap and start making money for the elites again

It doesn’t take nine months to run d-dimer tests and understand that a loose spike protein can bind to cells much as any protein.
What we don’t know for sure is how often these things happen, although one doctor has found that over 60% of his patients who had taken a vaccine showed recent signs of clotting.
If you want to see side effects that these shots are known to cause, just go to openvaers.com. The reports in VAERS are very thorough and require a lot of information which pretty much only a doctor can provide, if you see one, you can be very certain that a vaccine was the cause of the adverse event.
And having already had more deaths than all other vaccines in VAERS history combined is a pretty good cause for alarm and a really, really, REALLY good reason not to make it mandatory.
That’s all I really care about. Just don’t make it mandatory, and hold big pharma responsible. Getting a viral infection is an act of God; you can’t blame someone for that besides yourself and even then it’s not all your fault. Getting a shot is an act of man, if you get a shot and it kills you, it’s the fault of whoever injected you with it and/or the manufacturer of that drug. Doing less harm than a virus otherwise would isn’t a good enough reason to make it mandatory with no liability.

        Open source vaccines when?
It costs less than $100 and a few weeks for a synthesizing company to create the genes for you.
Having these vaccines behind a money hungry capitalist company is what’s driving a lot of the distrust of the vaccines and healthcare in general.

That equipment is freaking expensive, and having the personality, videogame skill, and technical knowledge to pull it off is found in almost no one except men, who can’t become popular in that line of work. Equipment for vtubing is not that expensive.
-$30 for a 1080p webcam for face tracking
-$800 gaming PC with at least a 1060 and 6 cpu cores
          -$100 for a decent Mic
-$300 for a 2 monitors, a cheap one for monitoring chat
-$50 to $800 for a rigged Vtube model

You don’t have to deal with the video production costs of regular face cam streaming with expensive lighting and cameras and shit like that.

Oh, and lest I forget, trying to figure out how to game social media promotion algorithms is an industry in itself, although the secret is often just paying for promotion, which you can’t afford as an individual. Many of those faces with followings big enough to be given the obnoxious title of "influencer" (including the softcore porn stars) also are part of some ring that’s paying instagram or whoever for promotion.

there are plenty, they’re just smaller and you don’t know about them. why? well the typical v-tuber persona appeals to the kind of fanbase that are easily marketed to, so the big players are naturally dominant promotion companies. it helps that these companies have already been well established for many years in asia as part of idol shit and voice acting.

the concept of "v-tuber" has many more possibilities than you see in the typical stream characters. they don’t have to be anime for one. many people also use the tech for DnD type situations and VR stuff.

There’s tons of them. They just can’t compete against big corporations. Every single hoe-boive person has their own team doing their artwork, management, licensing, marketing, products, equipment procurement, etc. They just show up to work and it’s all done for them. The smaller ones have to do everything themselves, so smaller fanbase.

i can’t think of any technology that has dramatically changed my life that would wow me. Everything I used in 2010 I still use now, except they’re a bit better.

-i dont really need a smart phone. i just use it to browse the internet on my break at work. i was already doing that in 2010, just slower.
      -i drive a 2006 car
      -clothing/fashion hasn’t changed.
      -same foods
      -same music
      -same desktop. just better parts
-nothing is fully autonomous yet like everyone claimed.

home automation stuff is neat, but none of it is game changing. i have no problem getting rid of it all and going back to dumb tools.

i dont know. nothing innovative has really happened. sure things have improved, but that’s to be expected. If I woke up today after 10 years in a coma, i probably wouldn’t be able to tell even 6 months passed. maybe in 50 years we’ll see some real technological game changers.
