Why does IRC exist in current year? I see that every general thread has its own IRC chatroom, but I don’t understand why. I even saw some retard asking if certain Di*cord channel (TeamSpeak for zoomers) has its own IRC chat.
      1. While you can join many IRC chatrooms without registration, they are still not anonymous. Thus, IRC is inferior to imageboards in terms of careless shitposting.
      2. IRC doesn’t support rich text, newlines, images and encryption. Thus, it is inferior to XMPP.
      3. If you just joined a chatroom, you can’t see older messages. IRC encourages you to ask the same questions over and over again. Thus, IRC is inferior to phpBB forums in terms of discussing serious questions. (Or any other forums with archives.)
The only use for IRC today is… I don’t know. Book piracy? But we already have Libgen for that. So the only use for IRC today is temporary chatrooms for streaming services. I remember one pony streaming website having IRC channel for viewers to discuss the stream.
When will IRC die at last? Imageboards are so much better.

you just outed yourself as the biggest newfag.
IRC is THE place for open source projects to coordinate and provide user support, besides mailing lists.
      just look at this list:

The only problem with IRC is that it’s not anonymous. But everyone uses a VPN nowadays so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        > problem with IRC
It is not anonymous (you WILL bear a nickname and you WILL hold responsibility for what you say).
        No encryption
        No newlines.
        No text formatting.
No images, archives and other files.
You can’t see older messages that were posted before you joined.

I am always laughing at people thinking everyone is a bot. Same in games like world of tanks. From all the 10k games I played, about 4k has me reported as a bot for sure. People don’t get that humans are different. If you did send me a link I would too click it instantly. Like, you send the link and less than 10 seconds I would click it.
Reactions like "nice try, shill" or something alike "why should I click such a link xD?" are completely normal to me.
Sometimes I think posts like that in the picture are just bait-posts.

          >It is not anonymous
It can be, and there are servers with no names.
          >No encryption
You can use encryption, but it’s pointless in a public chat.
          >No newlines.
          Pointless.
          >No text formatting.
          Wrong.
          >No images, archives and other files.
Gay and dumb, but clients exist that display images. Hosting a file somewhere is not an issue.
          >You can’t see older messages that were posted before you joined.
Certain servers will replay messages that happened shortly before you came, but most don’t because it’s a shit feature.
If you want to see all of the messages, stay connected.

            >They do it not because IRC is so superior, but because they don’t know other ways.
            lmao wrong

IRC is inferior to forums in terms of providing tech-support. IRC forces users to ask the same questions over and over again.

And? If you want support information to be accessible, why would anyone use IRC?
That’s retarded. It’s like saying IRC is bad because if you want to use it to host a wiki on IRC but it sucks for wikis.

                > And? If you want support information to be accessible, why would anyone use IRC?
Because everyone else have used IRC for tech-support. So new developer comes and thinks: "Yeah, I want to answer same questions over and over again. Guess I’ll set up IRC chatroom like it’s gently caressing 1996".

                >IRC forces users to ask the same questions over and over again.
No, it doesn’t. Many channels for helping newbies have public logs and they are indexed by search engines/searchable.

                > Many channels
ALL forums have archives by default. These are also indexed by search engines.

I’m not some mouth breathing moron asking other faggots for tech support on IRC. Most IRC users are tech literate and absolutely do not need to do anything like that.
Why are you so insistent on IRC being a medium specifically for tech support? You do realize people use it for casual conversation, right?
It is used for all kinds of discussion.

Because it IS used for tech support in 2020 for some reason. While clearly forums are much better suited for that task.

Discord is used by gay furry transexual child groomers, so that’s all it can ever be used for. You’re probably a furry pedophile, aren’t you? Why else would you use discord?

Thankfully, no. There are many tech support forums, and all forums by default provide archives. So I can google my problem and find it was solved back in 2005.
What I am trying to say is that IRC is inferior to forums as tool for providing tech-support. Developerd set up their own IRC chatrooms because it’s a tradition nobody questions.

Mods and janitors can you gently caressing absolute mong therefore imgboards are not anonymous

if you get a permaban all your posts are deleted so regular users can see the deleted posts are yours + it’s all archived on rbt, you have to go back

Yeah, and? "Anonymous" in "anonymous image board" means that you are anonymous "against" other visitors, not mods and jannies. You have no name and I have no name. You, without access to mod panel, can’t see my posts on other threads or boards. You can’t even highlight all my posts ITT because LULZ has no IDs.
Actually, there are Tor-only imageboards. On these you are truly anonymous.

It literally has nothing to do with IRC. If people want to use it for help with things, there is nothing wrong with that.
Saying the protocol is bad because people use it for something you don’t like is retarded.
What if people want their retarded questions forgotten forever? Do you think they should post it on some obscure IRC, or stack overflow?

In a perfect world, where IRC isn’t used in 2020, thede people would:
                        A. Go to an anonymous imageboard and post their retarded questions in /fglt/.
                        B. Create new account on Stackoverflow and post their retarded question there.
                        C. Not ask retarded questions at all. Maybe they would use google to find the answers.
But sadly, IRC is still used in 2020.

Because monkey developers don’t think. They just see that their fellow monkeys use IRC and decide to set up their own channels. If they would think for just five minutes, they would come to conlusion that IRC is legacy garbage and that forums/boards are much better.

                      >Why do you use Discord in the first place?
Collaborating on something with people that refuse to abandon it. As well as marketing to the people that would never go on IRC/Matrix.

Also discord isn’t a teamspeak alternative, even though it was advertised that way. Discord is 95% a text chat application. Maybe 5% of people use it for voice at one time, at most.

But it does have some redeeming factors despite being botnet, the screenshare works pretty well for example.

It also has a few core concepts better designed than XMPP to begin with, such as distributed rooms. Active development also means that it’ll catch up to (and surpass) XMPP in the remaining areas sooner or later. It just seems like the superior choice to me.

frustrated? Just annoyed. As i’ve gotten older I no longer like the idea of being banned for just some random comment I made cause some OP tranny got mad. Discord is even worse.

Oh and don’t get me wrong if there is a channel strictly for helping people fix issues say gentoo channel then its fine. Its just when you are for casual discussion does it become a problem.

      irc is garbage

you can’t even join most channels without first creating an account..

and to even create an account, you must use some valid email, not a throwaway like cockli.. and even if you manage to do that, you can’t use some sort of vpn or it won’t let access the server

so you have to use your real IP, and not only that, expose it to the entire server since irc doesn’t mask your IP.

"Anonymous" doesn’t mean that your IP is hidden. It means that you can’t highlight all my posts ITT. I have no name and you have no name.
Most IRC chatrooms force you to wear nicknames. Thus, it is not anonymous.

IRC is very good for learning programming and leenox.
You get into your language chat, you start programming, as soon as you hit a roadblock you can immediately ask shit in the channel and get a response. Forums/githubs etc is slow as shit and you need to build a good documented case to get an answer if any. On IRC you just fire a dumb question and you will find a couple of helpful dudes chiming in. You keep that chat open all the day, casually browse what people are discussing and you will absorb tons of knowledge that slowly builds up
Easiest way to learn programming ever. You don’t need some dumb sicp book.
If you want to use IRC to chat with total randoms about literally nothing of value you are doing it wrong and it’s as shit as facebook

IRC has ONE fantastic benefit in 2021:
      Technical barrier to entry.

Any moron can create a discord, participate in a forum, join a chatroom, etc.

You have to have some basic technical savvy to participate
in IRC– it filters out the technically illiterate.

ever heard of webchat anon? you literally just enter name and channel and you’re in, it’s easier than discords or forums because those require you to login with email while irc does not
I’ve seen plenty of retards joining my channel, ask a question and then get mad that nobody replied to them after two minutes and leave, so it is still an excellent filter but saying it has any technical barriers is nonsense

Element UI is really close to Discord in most aspects and even has most of the features (@mentions, media sharing, emoji reactions, bots, etc.). Perhaps wait a month or 3 for Spaces (roughly equivalent to Discord guilds/groups) are finished, then it’s a complete replacement and even better in many ways, excluding inferior voice chat.

Sorry, if I wasn’t clear enough, I meant to say that "spaces" are an upcoming Element feature. I’ve heard people complain that current alternative to Discord guilds (Element "communities") are too limited and barebones, so that should bring it closer.

Ah that explains it, sorry for getting it wrong. Searching Spaces gave me a telegram alternative and a discontinued Google product. Thanks for making it clearer, downloading it right now to check features and whatnot. End to End encryption is really attractive.

Element is definitely a good idea, as matrix is open and federated, and element does e2e.
They have real servers, and a concept similar to servers in discord. I believe called "communities".
The "communities" experience isn’t quite ready yet, but is due in the first weeks of 2021. There’s UI for it visible in element already, which is a little silly.

Discord is all about trannies and gayness. IRC is all about downloading. IRC has gotten even better in 2020/21 because all the fags that would usually shit up channels with gay talk and games say JoIn oUR DiScORRd and the channels are just full of packlists and announces. Like the old prechannel days, but every channel is like that now. Beautiful, brilliant.

Reminder, to be a jannie here you are literally forced to use discord while the mods live it up on IRC.

Of course there is formatting you idiot trucking zoomers. IRC is and always will be THE way to communicate on the I ternet. Servers support SSL vhost and VPN so anonymity has been dealt with decades ago.

IRC has had utf-8 support for years…

Anonymity isn’t about hiding yoir IP address, you dumb retard. It is about having no name. On LULZ you have no name and so you are anonymous.

"Anonymous" in "anonymous imageboard" doesn’t mean hiding from government, glowdiverse folk, ISPs or mods. It is about having no name, so others posters can’t see which posts are mine. It is about having no responsibility for quality of my posts. It is about careless shitposting. I thought this was obvious. So sad that I have to explain shit like this.
(Or course, AIBs that exist in darknet allow you to hide from glowies, ISPs, governments etc.)
Most IRC chatrooms force you to wear a nickname, and so you are not anonymous. You have to take responsibility for what you say.

AIBs force anonymity by design. I’ll stick to AIBs – preferably in darknet.

Don’t use IRC. The less demand for IRC there is, the less supply of IRC there will be. IRC must die so XMPP could thrive.

best part about irc is the tight knit community so unless you’ve been part of one for years it’s not the same and I bet it’s very hard to fit in these days

Write it in a picture so no bot scrapes it from LULZ.

Or can IRC do private shit? How? When I opened IRC I can join all the servers no problem.

                  However I’m a IRC noob.

it’s private in a way that you can’t find that channel name anywhere on the internet anymore and you can only join if I give you the channel name, it used to be a discussion hub for a certain mod but now it’s just friends hanging around
as best your intentions maybe I really have doubts about letting it be known on LULZ and potentially destroying my home channel

Inertia combined with sekret club/hipster mentality given how niche it is now. It’s archaic yes but that’s more a feature than a drawback now.
