The fact the then Queen Mother of the current Qajar Shah, and several other members of the Qajar extended family were involved in the removal and death of Amir-Kabir is a pretty major one. Amir-Kabir’s death due to Nasir being influenced by his mother claiming he would attempt to depose him and topple the Qajar dynasty is probably why the young Shah did it but the end result was the last great Persian before the Pahlavi founder would show up about 60-70 years later. All his pushes for reformation of the government, curbing the power of princes and members of the royal family, crushing and punishing corruption in the administration, pushing for using Westernization to keep Persia independent were badily handicapped by the incompetence and narcissism of the nepotistic Qajars.

The Mongols and timur absolutely destroyed Iran. I don’t think people understand the transformation and scale of decline that occured in this period. The safavids were able to scavenge the remains and build up an Iranian identity again, using what was left to hold their own and extract value but it was nothing compared to pre mongol iran. The collapse of the safavids and Nader shahs exploits crushed whatever sign of revival that survived. The qajar inherited a post apocalyptic landscape of centuries of destruction.
The ottomans were in a very different position amd held populus and relatively untouched regions like Egypt, syria, Anatolia, Greece, and the balkans-

You are half-right and half-wrong at the same time for different reasons, anon. For one, the Mongols did more more to kill Persians, other Iranian people or cull a swathe of them like with the descendants of the Sogdians. But most of this happened outside of Iran proper and more around the areas between Northern Afghanistan to Merv and Samarkand in Central Asia. As for the Timurids with Tamerlane, he did specifically cause wide scale massacres but in very localized parts of the Persian speaking country/lands. The Safavids would not have been able to recruit so many ethnic Persians, Kurds, and still somewhat Iranian Azeris if the claims of medieval Iranian historians are to be believed that almost 70% of the entire population of Persia was wiped out. The Safavids were able to largely field armies of similar size to the Ottomans even when not accounting for Ciracassian and Georgian or Quzilbashi.
