The Empire’s primary goal was always economic – providing goods (and a market) to boost England and then Britain’s wealth. By the 1940’s it was no longer doing that, and the amount spent on keeping control/the peace in those territories was getting out of control. You also had the problems of idiots comparing it to the third reich – because oversimplification has always been an annoyingly huge part of politics. Then you have America stabbing Britain in the back after the war, combined with the cost of rebuilding their cities from piles of rubble.
