Why are there no good FOSS alternatives to Spotify, especially on phones?
I don’t want to download music in 2021 nor do I want to use something as scrotebrained as NewPipe.

If you don’t want to download anything, use freezer. It’s Deezer but no ads, and free downloads. I think it can still stream at 320kbps, but it can only download at 128kbps now. If you do need to download, you can get a free month of Deezer premium and download your entire library.

freezer is dead anyway. just use spotify signup for the trial and cancel before it makes you pay, then signup again for premium rinse repeat

FOSS usually don’t have a marketing team & management. Spotify requires musician to use the service. You have to make sure you have exclusive music to you platform initially. You can’t get similar.

      > Why are there no good foss streaming?
Because the stuff you stream is all proprietary and copyrighted. So drm is compulsory, and someone has to pay the record labels. Spotify/Tidal/Apple music/etc pays (pennies to) the record labels and iplements drm as they want.

      > But I wanna stream drm free music on a foss platform!
Under the DMCA, you are entitled to one copy of a copyrighted work for backup. That means you can rip cds, or purchase flac online, (or use less than legal means of getting flacs), upload it to your VPS and stream to your phone. The caveat is that it requires a vps with tons of uplonk bandwidth and hdd space.

PiCorePlayer + LMS -> orange squeeze for offline on android or VPN into your LAN and stream directly, or god forbid expose ports.

you can expose 80 and 443 and put jellyfin or whatever behind nginx.
Or just expose wireguard and vpn in as you said. No need to open more than 80, 443, wireguard and maybe 22 if you need it open

yeah jellyfin is pretty good too, especially behind a reverse proxy

I use picoreplayer + LMS for dedicated local streaming and will just VPN to stream. I used to expose via traefik but trying out personal VPN

Would honestly like to see a libre app (and on f-droid) that is a clone of Spotify’s UI, but connects to Jellyfin for music.
I also wouldn’t be opposed to a libre Poweramp clone.

      >Why are there no good FOSS alternatives to Spotify, especially on phones?
because the reason Spotify is so cheap is because you CAN’T access the audio files directly. If you could pay $10/month to literally download as much FLACs as you like music labels would kill them.
So just buy the freaking album from Apple Music or wherever and extract the audio files you have actually bought.

Nope. I use version 8.6.0.830 and never encountered any problems. Might be the lite version but I’m not sure.
