      Francis Bacon
      Isaac Newton
      Edward Jenner
      Charles Darwin
      George Stephenson
      Oliver Cromwell
      Aethelbert of Kent
      Alfred the Great
      Edmond Halley
      Robert Boyle
      John Locke
      David Hume
      Adam Smith
      John Stuart Mill
      John Wycliffe
      George Washington

Just a very small sample of names to consider.

It’s not just about geography, more about the fact that he unambiguously considered himself American and urged others to do so.

He’s still of English descent though, like, 100% English and we know exactly where his England-born ancestors were originally from (Hertfordshire, in Essex btw). If we’re talking about political citizenship, then more generally he was a British colonial citizen and not a citizen of the kingdom of England.

I’m almost purely English (little bit of Irish) but I still consider myself Australian before I’m anglo. Washington was born to American parents in America, lived all his life in America and considered himself Amercian. GTFO.

I sure as hell wouldn’t consider myself solely an American when a bunch of filthy freaking foreigners are considered just as "American" as I am because they were born here.

It’s not fair that Englishmen get both Darwin and Newton, the founders of biology and physics.

In 10,000 years where the glory of humanity is spread across the stars, children will still read about them and their ideas. Not fair.

How is this even a discussion, see pic. Although Nelson does deserve praise as probably the greatest naval commander of all time.

          >Tudors are… LE WELCH
The Tudors were a Welsh family but saying that either Henry VII or VIII are ‘Welsh’ is a meme, same as mutts larping as irish. Pretty sure the closest Welsh ancestor Henry VIII had was his great-grandfather Owen Tudor, who was the one to Anglicise his name. He was the one that married Henry Vs Queen consort Catherine of Valois, who was French, and their son Edmund, Earl of Richmond, father of Henry VII, married Margret Beaufort, the great-granddaughter of John of Gaunt who was son of Edward III. Henry was more French than Welsh.

Surprised nobody mentioned Churchill yet, the voted for "Greatest Briton".

not him, but the reason they were expelled by the king iirc was too steal their shit to further fund the wars, and to curry favor with the nobility who owed massive debts to the garden gnomes.

English doesn’t mean Anglo-Saxon. It means English-speaking descendant of the Anglo-Saxons and the Britons. There was a very clear mixing of the two peoples. Hell, the House of Wessex was more than likely founded by Brythonic-speakers.
Among King Arthur’s descendants, the majority probably considered themselves English by the time of the Norman Conquest.

It’s Newton and nobody comes even close.
Darwin, Isaambard, Cromwell, Tolkien (born in SA to two English parents, moved to England at age 3), Locke, Adam Smith, Turing, Hawking, Babbage, Alfred the great and Henry V can fight for the next positions.
Shakespeare and Nelson are massively overrated, though still great men.

Literally the prosperity and powerbase the English formed to build their Empire on was because of this man. Without him the English would have remained perpetually impoverished. Their scientific, military, logistical, engineering advancements that bloomed for the 300 odd years they were free allowed a level of prosperity unforeseen in Europe in the same timeframe. Even the renaissance of later centuries only made it possible for the rest of Western and Southern Europe to catch up, and still bound by their economic woes were unable to be overtaken anyway by a bog island of illiterate, pasty, sheep worriers. The English were able to muster and deploy at will during the 100 years war for this very reason, while the French were always infighting and only the top 10% of nobles were not poverty stricken outside of war tribute, ransoms etc. So the French like much of the continent were dependent on a warrior caste that lived off feudal labour but unlike say Rome, could not be brought to use in war and conquest since they were utterly incapable of the organisation, economic freedom, and legal backing to do so.

England, before Cromwell sold the country out went from being perpetually invaded with only short periods of rest in-between to a powerhouse that fuelled twice the centuries of global dominance its economic period of freedom existed.
