Depends a lot on which particular army you were part of. Best case scenario for you would be if you were in a Commonwealth or American unit, in which case you would be court martialled for cowardice and reassigned to hard labour for the rest of the war (without pay). If you were in Wehrmacht then odds are you’d end up in a prison camp somewhere praying your camp would be liberated by the allies before you starved. If you were in the IJA then you’re probably shot or decapitated on the spot. If you’re unlucky enough to be a Soviet then you either get executed on the spot (if the commissar is feeling excitable at the moment) or reassigned to a penal unit and used to clear minefields by being marched straight across them. All in all, not great results.

If you were in the Soviet army you would be shot. You would also be shot if you injured yourself in order to get out of fighting, or even if someone thought you did. You’d also be shot for whispering about not wanting to die to a comrade or for writing your doubts down in a letter to your wife. You’d also be gulaged and then likely shot if you had the gall to be caught prisoner and returned when the area you were being held prisoner in is liberated.

If I was your squad leader, I’d tell you that you don’t have to die as long as you’re not a candy ass and kill the enemy first. Then, you’d probably still act like a freaking coward, and then get some sort of administrative action against you in an attempt to get you back to combat, and if you still refused to work or do anything of what you were told, you’d be put in prison for this. It’s all in the UCMJ, senpai. -

Desertion in Europe was fairly easy to do and not rare. My grandmother’s cousin went MIA in France and a guy from his unit told her family he was pretty sure he actually deserted. He probably married a French girl and happily lived out his life there under an assumed name.
