Using your own SearX instance defeats the purpose. The anonymity of SearX comes from multiple people using the same instance.

DuckDuckGo for more general searches as it’s at least better than normie-tier Google. I also use from time to time SearX instances and back to DDG if I can’t find what I’m looking for with SearX.

Is search better than ddg? If so, why?

      • #124746

        Guest

It is in being more "trusted" if you will, as DDG has no way to prove that’s actually protecting your privacy, etc. Plus there’s a lot of political talk about the site being owned by a garden gnome or whatever, besides the point. Then more recently about some hiring nonsense with diversity. Overall from the first point I made, it’s all /poo/ driven stuff.

      • #124771

        Guest

Yes. Solely from an engine standpoint, DDG relies on Bing for its search results, while Brave has an independent index (that also brings better results, at least for me)

there are better options (searx, startpage, brave) though none are perfect

DuckDuckGo. I want to use searx, but no instances seem to index google searches by default so I don’t get very good results with it. And setting google indexing up with one won’t work for me because that saves a temporary cookie and I only use incognito.

You can disable cookies, and add exceptions. That said it won’t work if you only use incognito.

        Google sucks
        >intentionally breaks their image search
        >intentionally curates their search functions
        >intentionally breaks their reverse image search

It’s all curated by gatekeepers of internet nepotism. I just want something that crawls the internet without human intervention of fact checking, censorship and curating what you think I should see. Ill give you one instance: I write a free ware and google refuses to scrape it because im grey balled or something. Meanwhile I google Rad-140 and pajeets are able to hack the search engine and a bunch of spammed AI generated crap links are everywhere. But nobody can find my Freeware calculator I wrote so people can get free answers from the calculator, because everything is curated. You think the calculator would be integrated by google like a kg lbs conversion calculator is. But no. Its note even scraped and instead shadow banned. Google search is a broken system.

I recently switched to Brave Search and it’s quite good. Basically, you get the same privacy as DDG or Startpage, but it uses its own independent index (DDG = Bing, Startpage = Google).

      Bing.

I wanted to avoid Google so used DDG for about a year, since DDG is basically some kind of anon bing but DDG image search is worse than bings, not sure why, so instead I just use bing for everything.

I tried SearX, don’t find it particularly good or useful for search results and image search incredibly poor.

      Yandex

If it doesn’t give me what I’m looking for I scroll to the bottom of the results page and click the bing or google button and yandex takes me to their result pages for my search.

Yandex is really the only legitimate competition to google. Every other “privacy” search engine just uses proxied google or bing search results.

Just tried this too, search "tight teen pussy" on bing images and brave – both without safe search and the results are 95% in the same order. The results suck too compared to the same search on Yandex.

              results
              bing & google: 3
              bing: 3

            host your own instance.
then you can go to preferences and set it to crawl through startpage instead of straight from google and it will show google results without getting banned.
you still need to trust startpage of course but you can obfuscate your info.

Can Brave search really be trusted, the browser is decent but money making scam, it’s hard to trust them.

Best Search outside of Google seems to be Bing – at least they’re upfront about their privacy and shit.

Yandex, Bing, Brave… all better than SearX no contest…

but searx is more pleasant to look, why others do not have "compact" mode, very fat.

Just set searx up to use those search engines and you will have the same output.
Searx isnt a search engine, its a metasearch engine that fetches from whatever you want it to and then aggregates all the results.

DDG and startpage as a backup if I need it. I never liked searx much, both in terms of design and results.
