It’s interesting, this got doomsayed a lot but the Chinese managed to be good stewards of the brand for almost 20 years. It’s only recently that Thinkpads have started to become a progressively worse value. Wonder what happened.

I interviewed with Red Hat a few weeks ago and the guy basically said it hasnt made much difference. I’m not even sure red hat will be rebranded

IBM wants red hat to stay a separate entity. You may have also heard of IBMs GTS/GBS split into a new company called Kyndryl. Both RH and Kyndryl are self contained with their own leadership. IBM learned to not fuck up companies that are doing well by replacing existing employees/management with IBM employees/management after the cognos disaster…

Most large banks, airlines, etc rely on IBM mainframes. This is also how IBM shot themselves in the foot early on instead of investing in cloud. Now we are playing catch up…
