Japan was considered the most technologically advanced country back in the 1980s, but today they haven’t adapted as well to the digital age, software, etc. Why is that?

Japan has always been good at taking things other people did first and making them exquisite. No Chinese sword compares to an average katana.

Most of your comparisons are post war.
Is it really surprising that a country being occupied by another country would try to sell their culture and technology back to them to get by?

I’m a car geek and it’s silly that someone would even waste their time doing this much cherrypicking. Japanese cars are quite innovative, gratz on cherrypicking a few random superficial similarities.

Everyone knows Japan copied shit, in the 50s and 60s they made all the cheap crap that China and Korea did, but in the 70s and 80s they caught up and started making things that were as good or even better than the rest of the West. They copied, they learned, and they contributed.

but this is dumb, you can do this with any two countries that are close enough to exchange culture and yes usually the bigger ones have the "original" because that’s how statistics/finance work

Japanese culture is afraid of making any changes in any other area that doesn’t regard tentacles in buttholes. Sort of like China except that the Japanese did got America’s funding their asses after WWII.

More like Japan has a huge if it’s not broken don’t fix it.
They industrialized in the 19th century because they saw what happened to China and they considered the industrialized Americans a threat.
Imperial China was a very self centered country, 中国 in Chinese literally means the middle country or the country in the center, of the world, and they told the westerners to piss off, because they notably saw the Guntenberg printing press being such a huge deal in the west when it was basically a copy of Korean tech that was itself a copy of Chinese tech.
They didn’t want anything to do with anything that disturbed their local order and systems.
Nowadays China is far more important technologically than Japan because they followed the same path as post war Japan with the hindsight of imperial China failings.

They suck at programming for some reason.
Also they have shitty work ethic. Ironically this shitty work ethic is caused by their need to seem busy and hardworking. They work long hours but do jackshit because they’re culturally forced to work long hours.
This is why people are more efficient working from home.

        >They suck at programming for some reason.
Has to do with the part in their history that being a programmer was considered to be a worse job than a janitor. "Programmer" as a title you gave to useless fucks who you couldn’t fire for whatever reason.

Back in the day they made a ton of gambles that didn’t pan out, if I remember correctly.

When super computers were the rage they dumped a lot of resources into building one using Prolog of all languages.

They also fell behind in camera technology too (ironically Fujuitsu is active in the supercomputer space today).

Japanese tend to really enjoy the things they have, and if it works and is comfortable then they don’t really see the need to ‘progress’ for the sake of it.
They had a pretty big headstart, and other countries had to deal with the pressure of going up and beyond that high bar.

Prolog. They thought the Lisp Machines in the US were pointing the way to the future, but decided to be contrary so they used the other AI language Prolog, designed custom Prolog CPUs for everything from embedded up to mainframes, and got btfo by COTS CPUs and C the same way the Lisp Machines did.

The Bank of Japan was ratcheting down interest rates throughout the ’80s, making capital easy to get. At the same time, the Yen was allowed to appreciate against the dollar, making Japanese international purchasing power greater. While this was going on, MITI took it upon itself to guide Japanese businesses (historically risk-averse) into the emerging field of semiconductors, which proved to be a big success. Japan became an early leader in semiconductors and, flush with cash, pumped out tech at great pace. A similar story to what China is doing today.

On basically the first day of the ’90s, as a result of too-fast tapering off of low interest rates, the bubble popped, hard. The Japanese economy didn’t really start growing again until the 2010s. With capital flowing less freely, Japanese businesses retreated into their characteristic risk-aversion, and innovation in Japanese technology largely dried up.

Japan still is the most technologically advanced country, they’re products just don’t sell well internationally anymore due to people instead buying cheap chink and scroteshit

They didn’t really. They were known for tech because american products were made in Japan, when Japan was cheap foreign labor, they caught up and became not cheap labor so now like any first world country they have a few big companies and college researchers. They still create and develop a lot, just things aren’t made there.

Looking at some of the stuff Panasonic, NEC, and Sony has for sale over there, I’d say Japan is still high-tech. Shit even fax machines and email are more futuristic than the cloud.
