When I was 20 or so and I watched the film "The Social Network", I couldn’t understand to save my life why he wouldn’t just sell his invention for a few million and fuck off into retirement. Why the hell would you want the hassle of running a business when you could just withdraw peacefully from society with enough money?
Later I grew up and came to realize that Type-As seek money and power for their own sake, frequently valuing them above things like comfort. It comes down to individual temperament and what you actually value.

The average 12 year old sold to an American plantation could expect to do hard labor on a farm, working from dusk till dawn, six days a week. He would live in ramshackle shelters, on licey beds either hand built with straw or if he was extremely lucky a handmedown mattress from the house, and would eat mostly scraps or what he and his fellow slaves raised themselves in what little free time they had. Yes anon, American chattel style slavery was some of the worst in recorded history. It was not, however, even the worst that was in practice at the time. White men were not raiding peaceful jungle villages for slaves, they were buying them from already existing markets. If they can be blamed for anything it was ramping up the slave trade because they bought slaves in bulk and sold guns by the crate which were used to war and capture more slaves.

But yeah while war creates a strong necessity and necessity is the mother of invention, it’s still scrotebrained to claim it speeds up tech rate by centuries. No amount of warfare was gonna speed up horse breeding to the point where they could go from pulling chariots to carrying people on their back quicker than it did, it’s not like you can beat a horse into growing up quicker.
