I’m trying to find more uncommon or overlooked items that would do great in a post money situation. Any tips on the best food items to buy or can, items to trade and simple but necessary skills to learn or have books on. I’m currently stocking up now. Also, is solar power worth it or should I just live in the dark?

I live in small town kansas

Best tip I’ve received so far is sewing tools. Without cheap walmart clothes we will need to repair our own clothes.

I’ve been learning woodworking and restoration/repair with old-fashioned hand tools.
As part of that I’ve also learned how to hand-sharpen quite well.

I figure both will be useful skills. You’d be shocked how many people in the industry don’t know what to do the second their power tools stop working.

            >Running water might not be available

            >Take pan and fill with some water (doesn’t matter how contaminated the water is)
            >Put smaller pan in pan
            >put lid upside down
            >Boil
            >condense will drip down from lid into smaller pan

            you now have distilled water

For cleaning purposes only, not for drinking. Distilled water has no minerals. You could also look for a water filter like the Big Berkey. Costs a lot, but can also clean any type of water (the dirtier the water the sooner you need to replace the filters).

You know by now every other person you talk to is a brainteasers idiot and that men especially that are dumb will act out in defense of their wrong ideas and stances.
Realize that they will be unbridled of law and will just kill you for the most idiotic reasons.
You may fight for awhile, months, years… but ultimately all your prepping will be useless because someone will come abd kill you for no justifiable reason

Not saying there wont be powerful entities that eventually come to my small town and take over. But until the world lights back up we will need to live like they did in the early 1900s so having a few overlooked items like Pool Shock for making bleach will be invaluable and can get you alot of goods and blowjobs post money.

There is an abundance of clothing in first word countries. You probably have way more than you would ever need and thrift stores are completely full of them. Shoes and shoe repair however is a different story. Most shoes are thrown away when they blow out while clothes are thrown out or donated when they become unfashionable

I’ve heard that alot. But I just imagine people will run out of cigs way sooner than lighters. It seems legit but I’m assuming society isnt on full collapse, well at least where ill live. and since I wont be living in the woods it wont be that necessary.

easy fire is always necessary, even when they run out of fuel, in a pinch you can use it as a flint

Yeah but they’re so common. I dont think theyd go for very much until like a few years down the road. I still got some but I dont think its worth buying a shit ton to sell.

I cant see how you would use more than 2 or 3 lighters a year for that shit. also you can always borrow a bit of someone elses fire to light yours or the many other methods. They guy even said they can be used liek flint. youd just have to keep trying and itd eventually catch a spark.

But I honestly think per dollar pepper or booze would be more valuable. thats all im saying. they arent useless but most people will be able to live without them or make the couple they have last forever. Like I said. even without fuel you can use it as a flint. just need dried grass at that point.

ultimately, skills and non-consummable tools are the best
but for $20 you can buy bulk lighters and buy a lot of friends when the time comes

cheaper to buy fluoride wash in bulk than toothpaste, you can brush your teeth with the brush to get rid of plaque, then swish with fluoride wash.
I buy pic related a couple at a time for almost 3 bucks each. Stuff lasts quite a while.

There’s a thing called washing soda too. Not the same as baking soda.
          To make your own detergent:
1c. each of baking soda, washing soda, 1 teas. of liquid castille soap. Then pour in a cup of vinegar. In a big container. It’s will bubble big.
Have to stir it every once in a while, letting it sit to dry out for a few hours. Kind of stinks. But just a quarter cup in washing machine will clean well. You can add a scent if you want to.

If you’re looking at trading in a post-collapse economy, you should not be thinking about things you can hoard now. Instead, look at what can be produced:
      1. food
      2. water
      3. medicine
      4. electricity

Learn how to create one or more of those things, and get the fuck away from major cities. Then you’ll be fine.

I live in small town kansas. tons of corn and wheat production here. I imagine food wont be an issue for a few years just on how much is in our silos. I’m not a garden gnome but I’d rather be a trader than some manual laborer or militia man. I’m looking into distilling and I asked about solar panels in the OP. are they worth it? I could only afford like a $200 one though.

Corn is DOGSHIT for self-sufficiency. The amount of water needed per edible calorie is disgustingly high with corn. Wheat is much better, but the refinement process is pretty extreme. Potatoes are decent. Mushrooms are infinitely better.

As for solar power, getting "off-grid" is not about finding an alternate way to create a livable amount of electricity, but about lowering your electricity needs. Solar power is something that only rich people can do because of the huge initial investment and solar cell replacements that are required.

I used to work for a crop consulting company as a field scout. Im certain they would have us inform farmers and ration out which fields get planted because a limited amount of chemicals and fuel to run the irrigation. We dont get enough natural rain so itd have to be irrigated from our wells. Yeah theyd probably not plant corn but if there is a bunch just lying around to plant they might. We do have several potato fields so thatd be nice.

About solar panels. I’m looking for something that could supply my computer, microwave, phone and electric skillet so I dont have to burn fuels all the time. Also, the computer will be rare but other items id like to use maybe every day.

Also it places a target on your house cause they can see you got electricity. those panels will get taken by the militia in no time. I can just go into a basement to cool off if its hot.

Just pour honey over some cloves (out of their shells) in a tight mason jar. You have to burb it every day, gases build up. Smelly, but tasty.

Spices sounds like a good call. If people don’t have enough food, it’s a dangerous situation to try to trade anything, but assuming they are managing to find something to eat, they would definitely appreciate something to enhance its taste and remember the old days of abundance. Spices take almost no space, weigh almost nothing and keep for a long time.

I’m working on gardening and pickling myself. Best part about it is I go to a foodbank where they leave stuff out, and I got a bunch of free cucumbers and mason jars there (ontop of the cukes I grew myself), just need to get the mason lids, probably will need to buy them. Next year I hope to expand the garden and grow a lot of different stuff.

Another idea I have later on is to find old furniture, tools, electronics, etc. that people are throwing out by their curb, or even at a junk yard, and fixing them up to sell, or barter for things other people have that you need.

This is the angle that most "preppers" don’t want to look at. Learning and gaining experience in real world skills. They want to do things the easy way and simply have things on hand, which can be stolen, taken by force, destroyed in fire or other natural disasters, etc. What you know how to do can help you survive even with nothing at all. People need people who can heal, fix engines, repair houses and build shelters, ability and skill will get you the protection and even privilege you need to survive. Gunsmithing and the ability to make homemade firearms is also a vital skill. In the USA indian wars, the Indians rarely killed gunsmiths, because their services were so valuable.

Gasoline and/or diesel. Possibly kerosene as well since you’re in a rural area. Get some old (but solid) 55 gallon drums that were previously (and originally) used for petroleum (motor/gear oil, hydraulic fluid. Food grade barrels MIGHT be ok, but I’m paranoid about them being lined with plastic, the fuel dissolving that lining, and then running liquified plastic through my motors as I rotate that fuel.)

I would recommend spending some decent cash on a good high volume manual pump, as stored fuel must be rotated periodically and siphoning 55 gallons or more out of those things every 12 months or so to fill up your cars is gonna be a royal bitch.

Remember to add Sta-bil, and put those drums on a solid palette to prevent corrosion from sitting on the ground out in the weather. If you want to be a safety autist, ground them to prevent static discharge, otherwise just be mindful that a tiny static spark means a big ass fire when working around those drums.

Invest in a GOOD generator (Honda, Generac, possibly a Champion. Don’t fall for the Predator meme) so you have the option to make electricity rain or shine should disaster strike. This also gives you more options for prepping refrigerated/frozen food like real fucking meat.

There you go. Now you can drive, make your own electricity, and you also have literal liquid gold for trade in a disaster scenario.

While all that is great advice. I live around way too many car nuts to worry about that. we have a small race track/ demolishin durby shit here. Also, I’m certain most of the fuel will be rationed out to farmers to irrigate the fields.

Don’t know how applicable this one is for you either but loading up an old MP3 player with music you like isn’t a bad idea. Keep some CD’s or burn them onto a usb. Same with any movies, shows, books you like.

Prepping for living in da woods is of course very unrealistic and difficult. mostly because thatll require nukes being dropped. Im thinking more about the fall of america or the electrical grid from solar flares. Simply, wed just become a 3rd world shit hole. people will still have some peace and need things. militias will form and itll be more like city states in olden times.

watch the show Jericho. Basically nukes are dropped. small towns are isolated. They have to accept trading caravans, repell refugees and eventually go to war with another small town for food. To me it seems like most likely what will happen.

First thing is SPICES, They were and still are as good as gold. In a collapse/post money people will not have access to exotic spices but the rich people, like the ones with post apocalyptic armies and land will want pepper, salt, herbs, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg etc. If you have enough of the stuff I’m sure you could trade for what ever you want. Bonus points for stockpiling COFFEE.

The second thing is medicine. Anything that can reduce a fever will be worth a lot of money.

The third thing is Alcohol. You can store it for your whole life or you can learn to make it from fermentation and or distilling. You tell a corn farmer you’ll make his corn mash into whiskey and I bet you he will give you all you can eat. Can also use high prof alcohol as disinfectant.

A random thing you could do that isn’t mentioned is stock pile rope and cordage. In a collapse/post money scenario people will not have that many machines or cars to do work as gas will be limited.

Do you know what was used all over the place and for everything that is hardly around now? Rope and pullies. Yep, everyone will need that and good rope is not easy to find or make.

You could even have cordage and make fishing nets for people/families near you and I bet they would trade just about anything for a couple fishing gill nets.

MREs are more useful when you need to keep moving and stay light in weight. It doesn’t hurt to have a box for emergencies (this includes things like floods, tornadoes, etc) but canned non-perishables tend to be more satisfying, it’s just that you need a place to store that weight.

Watch the show "jericho" this is the situation i believe is most realistic. Also best things so far ITT has been sewing supplies and old phones with tons of guides on making shit. you can trade the phone itself for alot since knowledge will be worth the most when no one knows how to do shit. fill it with guides on making medicine, fixing cars, growing food guides etc…

A few raspberry pi’s + a bunch of sd cards with kiwix.
On it I put the entire wikipedia, anything else that might be useful like medicine books, how-to’s on electricity/engineering, basic school stuff to educate kids etc.etc.etc.

And I put them in a grounded faraday cage.

Catering to vice will be the ultimate money maker.
Booze. Drugs. Women. If you can supply these early into collapse (1-5 years in) you can capitalize on te absolute debauchery that will happen early on. People will trade canned goods for weed beer and pussy because early on the majority of survivors will be scum and lucky retards. After that, though, they will get filtered when it will come time to create and not just feed on the decaying corpse of civilization.
After that it will be food, tools, clothes, and minor luxuries like alcohol, sweets, and animals.

When I was a kid, maybe 5-6 years old (I am 10x that old now, I had a premonition that I would live to see terribly tragic times. And I also somehow knew that sanitation/cleanliness would be the difference in who lived and who died, no matter how prepared the food or ammo supply.

So here’s my advice about keeping the homestead clean on a regular basis so you won’t be caught in a complete shithole when the SHTF for realz:

Bathrooms and Kitchens get a deep clean once a week, minimum with spot-cleans daily. Wipe counters, stove, garbage can lid, microwave, frig handles, etc, DAILY. Where you cook and eat and where you shit and wash your body are the most important areas to keep clean. And I don’t mean just no-clutter clean. I’m talking sterile clean. As is humanly possible.

Use HOT water to wash and rinse your dishes.
Sinks and drains are disgusting. Pour a cup of baking soda down the drains and follow up with a cup or two of white vinegar. (Can also use hydrogen peroxide.) Do this every other month or so.

Buy a bottle of Soft Scrub, a toilet brush, and a few cleaning sponges. Use them and you’ll get the routine down to no more than 10-15 mins. Let the sponges air on the window sill. Don’t just throw a wet sponge under the sink. Ew. And obviously use separate sponges for the and bathrooms…NEVER should a bathroom sponge be used in the kitchen or visa versa. Double Ew.

Also if you have a dishwasher, throw your kitchen sponges in to sterilize them and let them air after.

I keep one currently used bottle and TWO backups of baking soda, vinegar, rubbing alcohol and peroxide at all times. Because if the SHTF and I’ve got the basics for covered. Likewise with toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, and tissues, garbage bags, laundry detergent, borax etc. I don’t use bleach in my home b/c I have a septic but I would if hooked up to city sewer.

Thanks ol’ fren. We appreciate the wisdom. Consider buying Pool Shock cause it can be made into bleach easily.

        Continued…
Keep floors swept/vacuumed/mopped and leave your shoes at the front door or porch. Don’t wear your shoes in the rest of your home. Or keep a pair of slippers are something that never go outside.

Bedding gets changed WEEKLY. Ok, maybe bi-weekly for you lazy fucks. Pillows get washed and dried every 2-3 months. And whenever possible AIR your pillows out in the sun. Even if you live in an apartment put your pillow on a chair and let it sit next to a sunny open window. Best option: Get a clothesline and when on that rare sunny windy day when the Chemtrails aren’t in your area, AIR your quilts and blankets and sheets.

And always, always, always, change to clean bedding when sick and change again when feeling better.

Also…OPEN ALL YOUR WINDOWS AND LET YOUR DWELLING AIR NO MATTER HOW COLD at least weekly if not daily. If you have poor cross-air circulation, place fans in windows to draw air through and OUT.

Never forget FABRICS hold and carry all manner of microscopic pathogens. (Look up Typhoid Mary if you don’t believe me.) Also never ever ever leave your clothes or bedding on the floor. Invest in a few hampers, FFS.

Regularly wipe down door knobs, remotes, steering wheels, and DAILY clean your cell phone and keyboards with just a dab of rubbing alcohol on a clean cotton cloth. (Poor man’s computer wipes.) And do same with your eyeglasses.

HOSE OUT and AIR OUT your garbage cans once in awhile, too.

Oh, and you people with dogs. They should have their own furniture and their own bedding which gets cleaned/changed more often than your own.

        /end rant

Correction. It isn’t about external cleanliness, but internal. Those who obsessively externally clean will share the same fate as animals caged.

All I know is that rabbits should be a supplement meat and you can’t live off of just them.

Goats (milk), chickens (eggs and meat), fish (meat) and bees (honey). Everything else is a meme that requires big farm or a lot of food to feed.

Learn to craft simple ancient tools and weapons. Pic related for example could be made in like 5 minutes with some rope, and in skilled hands could be as effective if not more effective than a bow.

I already own a sling shot. weapons are so readily available here that i dont think thatd be necessary. but yeah a sling would be nice for warning shots or a last resort weapon.

It could be a valuable trading item, a cheap hunting tool to not waste precious ammo, it could also be used to lob thrown weapons (molotov’s, etc) at much greater distances. Sling staffs were also a thing for greater power and larger projectiles.

Okay now im getting it. if I had a mini catapult or scorpion throwing molotov cocktails or bleach/ammonia jars that would be pretty great.

I had the idea to make an attachable bayonet and carve the bottom end of the staff slightly to fit it. You would have a ranged weapon, a tool for navigating harsh terrain, and what effectively amounts to a spear rolled into one.

spears will be my favorite weapon in ooga booga times. Keep dangerous things at pole lengths away. Easy to use and requires very little training. can even be thrown at stuff too. what’s not to like?

low tech hunting tools seem great; even if you own a gun you may want to conserve ammo, or you want to keep quiet.

Another thing that will help in the long run, learn to live with less.
Not just having less stuff, but actually eating less.
Everything will last longer. You’ll get fitter.
And coloring books and crayons. When punks come to call, that might keep them busy. If you’ve got neighbors with kids, that will barter well too.
And string and rope. In case the kids get out of hand.
