GuestAnon, you’re confusing survival of the fittest with meritocracy. Selective pressure 100% does create stronger animals. Sometimes that selective pressure comes from resource scarcity, sometimes it comes from other things. It’s reasonable to extend these principles to behaviours. This is the basis of evolutionary psychology. Feel free to criticize evolutionary psychology, but your reference to meritocracy just shows that you didn’t understand the post you replied to.

GuestMeanwhile in reality
>Having few bananas mean only the rich (who own majority of the bananas) and the desperate (who will do anything to suck of the rich) will survive
>"Strong monkies" make a system that benefits the rich creating plenty of surplus value in process
>The rich monkies see that they’re losing control when there are too many bananas and will then destroy bananas to create a shortage and to repeat the cycle
Tale as old as society

GuestBecause companies that produce high quality products don’t get repeat business, their products last a lifetime.
The key is making it so your product lasts slightly longer than the competition (or exactly the same length of time if you’re part of a lightbulb consortium), while also appearing higher quality at first glance. Bonus points if you can shove in some buzzword features and pretend it’s more energy efficient somehow. Make something too crappy, and the consumers will buy from your competitors next time (who are all really just shell companies and brands you already own the rights to).

GuestI once had a Tefal ActiFry. You put a little bit of oil in them with some chips (fries for you merilards) and they’d automatically rotate and flip as they cooked so when they were done they’d taste perfect, like they had been deep fried. It didn’t last very long and it stopped working within a few months.

Guestwhy put in the r&d when people aren’t willing to pay for a fancier microwave?
even though the computer in that would be peanuts to produce, why spend the money even developing it in the first place, if you can get the same amount of money by just not doing it?
making something cheaper is often more rewarded than making something better -
October 13, 2021 at 2:41 pm #203087

GuestReal answer is competition leads to manufacturers using cheaper shoddier parts to save on costs. People buy the cheapest thing that works so all you need to do is get a working product, it doesn’t have to be durable.

GuestAre you telling me that you use a convection oven to pop jiffy pop?
And anyway, if you want to talk about flavour, etc, the best way to make popcorn is with a dedicated popping device like an air popper or stovetop popper and add butter and other toppings separately to get the exact proportion of butter, saltiness, etc, that you want. But at the end of the day, it’s popcorn we’re talking about, not fuckin caviar, and I’m most happy flinging a bag into my microwave, pressing a button, and coming back 2-3 minutes later to collect my perfectly popped popcorn.

personally i would not call this antiquated, because it’s basically like any other modern microwave, i could slap this in my kitchen and nobody would even question it, because it looks and functions like any brand new microwave -

GuestBecause of marketing department and bean counters
The marketing department wants to sell microwaves to scrotebrains who can’t set the timer and power themselves
the accountants want to make it as cheap as possible
Result-cheapest electronic system that fail as soon as you look at it.Same goes for everything.
Iphone-
Marketing flaws-OS for scrotebrains that’s useless for anyone smart
acounting-hardware designed to failAndroid-
Marketing-Muh always listening voice assistant cause scrotebrains don’t wanna type
Awful sandboxing (for android 11+) that slows phones down cause scrotebrains can’t help themselves with avoiding virusesAccounting- Bloated OS, designed to make phone slower after x amount of time.
scrotebrained choice of flash memory that becomes slow over time
Unrepairable hardware (impossible to get spare parts)PC-
Marketing-Software designed to not run on old hardware while fooling you into thinking you need it(like games… People still run new games on old hardware by modding them, proving that it’s intentional but muh graphics).
accounting-Hardware sometimes self destructs (see capacitor plague and battery acid leaks)Cars-
Marketing- scrotebrained digital systems that fail and takes away the ability to even start your engine cause scrotebrains feel it’s high tech and cool
Accounting- designed to be unrepairable-

GuestCars aren’t designed to be unrepairable, that’d bite the manufacturers in the ass hardcore. It’s much better to design them to be annoying to repair, making the customer bring it to the shop for repairs instead where you can fleece both the customer with spare part prices and the shop with yearly maintenance software licenses.
