SEATO was established to mirror NATO in Asia, as a communist deterrent. Seeing as how Pakistan was anti-communist, stemming from India’s ties with the USSR, and their ownership of East Pakistan (Bangladesh) at the time, it was seen as acceptable. Myanmar and Indonesia rejected joining, as did Malaya and Singapore though these two maintained ties. France was included owing to their recently ended role in Indochina, though the Indochinese states were excluded per the Geneva Agreement, but were placed under their protection. Cambodia rejected this, and SEATO could not protect Laos later on due to France and Britain’s unwillingness to get involved in the greater conflict in Indochina. Had they, you would’ve seen Pakistani troops among others fighting North Vietnamese and the Pathet Lao in Laos. The pact fell apart when Pakistan lost Bangladesh and became critical of its supposed allies for not coming to their aid during the Indo-Pak Wars which had occured, the other states claiming they didn’t because Pakistan was the aggressor.

Now, don’t get me wrong – We would undeniably lose even against Germany alone. That’s a fact. But the thing is that German military in 1938 was FAR from even that of late 1939. It would be a very costly war for Germany, way costlier than the invasion of Poland and proportionally probably also more than say invasion of France. Again, we would have – obviously – lost, and I don’t think World War 2 would have been avoided, but chances are it would have ended years earlier. Then there are the even more speculative things like the plans of the german generals to kick off Valkyrie in the event of war breaking out in 1938 as they believed that Germany was not ready.-

Basically a similar thing going on in SEA at the moment, it’s the reason why the ‘quad’ alliance failed and why the US is now banking on the AUSUK alliance.
South Korea, Japan and India simply could not be made to work together/with the US.
Even Europe has it’s fingers in the pie but they are also fractured over the matter, with France, Germany and the other member states having different ideas about their actual aims in the region.-

Sure, just like they have when the Hungarians invade and took Carpatho-Ruthenia for themselves between the First Vienna Award and the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.
Hungary was recognised as a German ally and neither of them would try their chances against those.
Which is what happened next. Romania didn’t freaking fight either, Germany told them to sign all of Transylvania off in the Second Vienna Award and they were happy they asked only so much. Stood by and did nothing when Wehrmacht-Hungarian forces took a turn to assfuck Yugoslavia.
Sure, if you had perfect foresight then Poland would know Germans are just biding their time and the existence of these small states is beneficial for it. And the Little Entente would know they were bonked anyway and would have started the unified war which would possibly force the Allies’ hand.
But they did not and nothing even begins to suggest any of these states would do just that. -

Research the black ships, it’s a really interesting piece of history. to summarize, Japan was under Sakoku (no one in or out) or centuries, then americans just showed up with modern ships demansing japan open up (essencially, unequal treaties like those forced in china,). this made japan wake the fuck up and become a modern great power to defend itself.

The legion was around way before the AOF and AEF though. With colonials they could just use good status or force to get them in. The first was mainly used for the pacification of the territory, while the second for the war (Mobilization was unpopular in Algeria for example, it was mainly quartered to the Pieds Noirs).

Is it just me or does a lot of American propaganda seem almost fundamentally different? I don’t have any examples on hand to explain what I mean, unfortunately. It seems as though they like to portray the enemy as small, weaker, and a nuisance and themselves as the bigger figure that effectively just needs to dole out punishment to an insolent child (like ). This is in contrast to other propaganda which portrays the enemy as a big beast that threatens them and which needs to be slain like a dragon, with themselves being portrayed as small and vulnerable (like that one piece of Nazi propaganda that shows several European nations as small armies against one single large man as the Soviet Union). Might just be my confirmation bias though.
