I feel like the flashlight kind of ruins the idea of the "Primal" factor of fear.
My understanding of the primal fear is that it is what made our great ancestors, Neanderthals and first humans, freeze in terror at the sight of it. The dino is scary, but the flashlight just makes it too artificial. Decrease the brightness, and make the outline barely visible, with the eyes shining in the dark, then you got me.

I am really scared of the sea. I used to ignore the no swimming warning on a particular beach with strong waves, until I got my feet sunk in a splash of wave, and watch as the shore is eroded and what used to be a gentle slope became a cliff in one hit of wave.

The reason why water sucks is biological – it’s neither acidic nor basic, a great solvent for all sorts of other substances, most of it happens to remain liquid on Earth, it can be moved around and managed easily with fats and proteins, but also helps those fats and proteins work properly. Water environments are easy mode for biology. Why would you want to be there when it just lets noob organisms get huge, fast and powerful for free? Come out on land where things are harder and you need to strategize more, instead of just being a half-inch jellyfish that instantly kills.

How long would the current push you down before you could break free and swim up? Could someone like Michael Phelps defy that shit and enter that wave at the right angle to just force swim his way up and through to the surface?

The pic looks like Teahupo’o to me, which is a break in Tahiti. The deep seafloor rises very rapidly up to a shallow part with a reef on it. Similar conditions at most of these Pacific spots lead to very localised breaks like this. At the point where the crowd is, the wave doesn’t ‘break’, so they can just chill there and they bob up and over the wave harmlessly. The more central part that the camera is looking towards is where it actually breaks and you don’t want to hang around there. The difference is literally a few metres.
I’d love to visit it one day.
The wave breaks onto a shallow reef and if you try to surf it and get it wrong you can get crunched easily.

Also a foot inside the boot is a terribly common thing amongst remains of missing people. I forgot which podcast covered it on youtube, but it was mentioned how it was a common occurrence with no apparent explanation.

The shoe/boot with a foot still inside thing is super common because its a joint. It gets detached easy by carrion creatures, natural decomposition, weather conditions, etc and the foot itself is left relatively untouched. The shoe may also float better, carrying it off from the body, etc
This is why cement shoes are a terrible idea in reality.

I’m much too small to satiate it’s caloric needs. Instead I see myself swimming alongside it, like a remora tagging a shark. The remora doesn’t fear the shark, the remora swims with the shark. Always close to an apex predator just enjoying itself eating the scraps of fish carcass the shark can’t get to.
It’s like that one small frog that tarantula’s ‘adopt’ as house pets as the small frogs eat the smaller insects that would threaten the tarantula’s eggs.
In a way, they are now equals, even with one being vastly more powerful.
