How did the great powers let this happen? Why throw a fit for N.Korea and Iran but not Pakistan?

The greatest geopolitical error made by America in the 20th Century was allying with Pakistan instead of (more openly) with India.
Pakistan should have been invaded instead of Iraq.

India was openly socialist until the 1990s and aligned with the Soviets. The US needed Pakistan to (1) keep the Indians in check and (2) keep the Soviets in check in Central Asia. Containment.

Yeah but’s not the case anymore. Pakistan’s actions have backfired on them spectacularly because after continually lying to the world that "noooo, we’re not arming and training terrorists that are killing Iranians and Americans and Indians and Chinese" and finally being caught in the act when the US tracked guns they gave to the Pakistani government and found all of them in the hands of terrorists, they lost basically every ally they had. The US’s relationship with India is now stronger than ever specifically because we told Pakistan to go fuck itself.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad we’re closer to India. They’re honestly not just a much better ally, but ideologically both parties can understand one another. This said, it doesn’t change what Pakistan did, and CONTINUES to do. Now that they’ve been found out and gutted over this shit, they have no reason to stop.

Because Pakistan was a key US ally during the Cold War.

      >Why throw a fit for N.Korea and Iran but not Pakistan?
North Korea is an insane communist totalitarian dictatorship that has sworn to destroy America and Japan and regularly fires missiles at Japan.
Iran is an insane theocratic dictatorship which regularly promises that it will "wipe Israel (our greatest ally) off the map".
Pakistan on the other hand is just your standard run-of-the-mill 3rd world corrupt republic, like Mexico or Brazil or India.

US Cold War allies get away with a lot to this day. Everybody knows that Pakistan has been steadily funding the Afghan Mujahideen and then Taliban pretty much since 1979, yet even the recent hearing on the issue for the House Armed Services Committee avoided asking about whether we should place sanctions on Pakistan. As to why they’re allied, Pakistan was born as a British ally – its existence was only secured by the final will of the British Raj, and so it served as an outpost in South Asia for British interests even as India became extremely hostile to the West and retreated into its own "splendid isolation" of non-alignment (although as anti-colonialists, they pushed more into the Soviet camp). When the British became a non-entity east of Egypt after Suez, we (America) stepped into their role as Britain’s new overlord.

It’s literally on the verge of an Islamist takeover LMAO, they dug their own grave since their independence and especially started digging it after Yahya Khan started inviting Islamist fundamentalists that secular socialist Arab Republics had expelled to help genocide the Bengalis, and later once Zia-ul-Haq invited more in to help train the Mujahideen and destabilize Afghanistan overall.

Yes, which unironically was a key reason the US during the Cold War era supported them over India. The US political establishment was quite racist from the 50s to the 70s, and Nixon personally hated the Indians, seeing them as ugly, smelly, disgusting poo-skinned slum-dwellers and thus wanted to support Pakistan over them.

Nixon’s personal autism was a non-factor in US Cold War alignments. Kissinger just let the moron rant after Indira Gandhi cockblocked his efforts to assist Pakistan in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.

Ironically the Islamist faction in Pakistan has always been the most pro-US. Zia-ul-Haq was probably the most pro-US leader Pakistan ever had. It the Pakistani socialist leftist faction that has historically been anti-US and anti-Western.

No, it makes perfect sense. Truly civilian-controlled governments have generally been far more concilatory to India and they’ve been reaponsible for the periods of detente between the two countries. On the other hand, the military is completely tied into the Islamist faction of the government and it sees the US as a partner it can use to cudgel India and Afghanistan – now that the US is backing away in horror with Trump even calling for sanctions back in his term and Biden shifting his complete focus to India, Pakistan’s military establishment has seen the writing on the wall and fully embraced its identity as a Chinese vassal in exchange for protection from Afghan and Indian national interests.

Iran is not ”an insane dictatorship” by any standard. Arguably more democratic than Russia for example. There are decently fair elections, and the supreme leader functions more like a constitution, drawing the guidelines in which the elected leadership acts. They keep each other in check somewhat. Iran could have been even more democratic and free, but USA and your great allies just had to prevent that from happening. God I hate ignorant american scrotebrains so much.

Technically Pakistan was and is in its full legal right to develop nuclear weapons, since it never actually signed the NPT (along with Israel and India).

Iran and North Korea on the other hand did sign the NPT, which makes their nuclear weapons programs in violation.

Nukes are really easy to develop, a smart college student who’s taken a few nuclear physics classes could design a nuclear bomb with access to academic material, and every western country with nuclear reactors could build a bomb in less than a month if they really wanted to, but building a nuclear bomb is politically risky and can only really be justified if your menacing neighbor has them. Pakistan had to have nukes once India had them and India had to have nukes because China had them so it was politically justifiable.
      >Why throw a fit for N.Korea and Iran but not Pakistan?
Because Iran is the enemy of the US and the US is the world’s dominant superpower. Also insane religious fanatics who under no circumstances should have access to apocalyptic capabilities are a major part of their government. Iran is more justified since the Israelis have nukes, but they were already an enemy of the US before starting their nuclear program. North Korea had no imminent nuclear threat and was another crazy despotism that should not possess apocalyptic power, and once getting those nukes made a habit of threatening just about everyone with them.

They’re all pretty justified as deterrents against US aggression, either real or perceived. You’d be pretty damn paranoid to if your enemies built half a dozen military bases around your borders.
