For example they have a rich tradition of witches, fortunetellers and medicine man/woman. They are also keen on warding off curses and evil spirits and quite a lot at least in the older generations take it very seriously.

Existence of the paranormal implies the existence of normality, which doesn’t exist in Eastern Europe. So what’s paranormal elsewhere is normal there. In Soviet Russia, you spook ghosts.

Communists fought and killed most of the traditional spirits and monsters. Some like vampires fled to the west, but have been slowly returning since the 90s.

The accident was man-made, the things that followed are certainly anything but "normal".

I am very interested in hallucinations induced by radiation. It seems that a lot of energy causes people to see things they usually don’t. Even cameras die from radiation.

            Very strange.

Soviet era shit is being leaked because there is no soviet union anymore, so no repercussions if people from the republics outside of russia leak it.

They’re so superstitious but decades and decades of totalitarianism drove the good stuff deep underground. There was probably still some real pagan shit in the villages before the wars steamrolled through and then the famines and what have you.

        And mushrooms.

I remember a Finnish guy posting about his national mythology a couple of days ago. It was a pretty good thread, it’s possible that it’s still in the archives.

I looked into Finnish myth for my own interest, so I will post what I can remember.

Apparently, the Vikings feared them a lot, since Finnish shamans were very skilled at conjuring wind. They used to steal Finnish girls from tribes in hopes of their magic avoiding them and thus protecting Vikings. No trace of Viking invasion remains, only of Swedish(and short Russian) occupation. I guess it worked.

The Saami were always known as powerful mages. People often came to them for divination and healing, not just Finns, but everyone who was able to get to Lapland.
Sadly, most of this knowledge has been lost due to conversion.

There are at least 2 places in the afterlife. Tuonela, the land of the dead, ruled by Tuoni and his wife and Pohjanmaa, the icy and cold hell ruled by the Northern Maiden(this is the translation of her name). To get to Tuonela, you must first cross a river. It is also guarded by a swan who ensures that nobody who doesn’t belong there enters.

the paranormal thing about eastern europe are the village idiots that roam around drunk and speaking random gibberish; urban centers have are unremarkable, typical westoid trash feel but without scrotes
I guess there are lots pf abandon villages, abandoned soviet era factories, abandoned orphanages where they kids were tortured by the staff or in-between themselves, jails where they kept the prisoners for labor camp or other re-education
there are lots of places to visit in the balkans or in ukraine and more northern area if you want your dose of desolation, bleakness and loneliness
