Anon, most of it was always scrotebrained. But most of it was cordoned off by borders like the border around AOL that contained the AOLtards there.-

GuestYou get normalscrotes off the internet. You do that by removing the platforms that cater to them (social media, youtube, other lowest-common-denominator shit) Why do those platforms cater to normalscrotes, giving them a reason to be on the internet with all their drivel? Because normalscrotes are consoomers and it’s profitable to gather up a bunch of them and then sell ad space. So to get rid of the platforms doing this, you have to make online advertising no longer a viable way to make money.

Exactly. Technology-related politics and irrigation systems are, in fact, technology.
Discussing the behavior of cattle on social media is no different than discussing social media policies/happenings, which happens every day.-

GuestWhile I’m tempted to say youtube comments 10 years ago were just as formulaic (remember "the dislike bar is the size of Justin Bieber’s penis"?), back then there would be at least a few top comments that weren’t some generic joke format. What’s really disenheartened me is going to videos on really niche subjects and still seing every comment be this me: bullshit.

GuestYeah it’s difficult to tell why and what happened. My gut instinct is that the feeling comes from the failure of the Internet. It was this cool new thing with limitless possibilities but now it has turned into something that mindlessly feeds "content" to people and spies and takes away your freedom. I can’t see any way out of this, the whole smartphonesphere is built on this. There are people don’t use PCs anymore, just smartphones.

GuestThe iPhone was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for the golden era of the internet or whatever you want to call it. Released in 2007, it took some years to catch on and by 2011 the culture was already bonked beyond repair. Everything after that was just a slow painful death for what the internet once was.
Also thisThe commercialisation of the internet and it’s consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

GuestHagen recounts how links were established with others, including Yves Devilles from INRIA in Paris, Johan Helsingius of the University of Helsinki in Finland, Daniel Karrenberg of the University of Dortmund in Germany and with other university and technical sites such as the Technical University in Vienna, the University of Stockholm in Sweden, Siemens in Germany and Olivetti in Italy. Eventually e-mail via UUCP was established with support from Armando Stettner at DEC laboratories. Those involved wanted also to have "a regular exchange of news articles (USENET) as well," Hagen adds. Usenet in Europe, he explains, "was born from a tape I took with me from [the] San Francisco USENIX conference …back to Amsterdam." He tells how he met Dan Lorenzeni at a USENIX conference. Since Lorenzeni worked for Philips, whose mother firm was from the Netherlands, and Hagen was from the Netherlands, an agreement was made to have Lorenzeni send Hagen tapes of news articles. Hagen describes how a 1200-baud UUCP intercontinental link was set up between philabs in the United States and mcvax in the Netherlands. He explains that they couldn’t use 2400-baud modems as that "equipment was unreliable, expensive, and modems from different manufacturers could not talk to each other." On one occasion, Hagen remembers he came into the office "rather early (9:30 am) and noticed that the 1200 baud modem [was] still running. UUCP US and UUCP Holland were sending each other resync messages. It was running from 7 pm the previous night to the [next] morning. Andphone charges were six dollars a minute." Within 5 minutes, Hagen remembers, he was in the Director’s Office "trying to explain the high phone bill" which they had run up using "equipment which was not even allowed," as the law in the Netherlands didn’t allow use of a 1200-baud modem.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AOL was a complete freaking failure in Europe that failed to turn a profit well into the mid 2000s at which point they sold their networks along with all call centers to local providers which you would know if you had any knowledge about what the fuck you’re talking about beyond wiki articles. Guest>aol in Europe failed to make a profit therefore usenet never existed in Europe and eternal September never applied to Europe despite evidence already being presented in the thread to the contrary.
Seek help and take meds.
FYI: The failure of AOL in Europe is well documented in articles and on Wikipedia, so that part of your argument falls flat too.
I know you’re desperate to be right and to have the last word, and I know you’re literally begging to be able to tell others to “cope, seethe and dilate” while calling them zoomers and scrotes because you don’t actually have any single point of refutation, but you should know when you’ve been beaten.
Remember to read the full thread and all linked posts before replying next time, and lurk for at least 5 years before your first post. Thanks.PS: I know that last part will really upset you, so just breathe in and hold your breath for 5 seconds before breathing out to calm yourself down. Thanks.

Guestthe moment people on phones could access the internet, it was over
there used to be hurdles, very minimal, for setting up connections and accessing forums, that meant those who could do the bare minimum effort could only access it…but now that every scrotebrain on the planet has the ability to fling its shit opinion wherever it may land, without any hassle, knowledge, or expertise…it is over
maybe look into IRC’s if you want good discussion

GuestWhat is it with people repeating the same joke over and over anyway? And I don’t just mean the same format like OP’s pic. I mean literally writing the exact same joke again.
Go to any popular video, read the top comments and then sort the comments by newest, and you will see people just posting the top comments again.
What do they get out of it?
And yes I assume some are bots, but not all.-

Guestyou know the kid in school that would repeat maymays he saw on 9gag/tumblr/whatever the day before? Same thing, you take content and repeat it to get some percentage of the original’s value.

GuestNot him and in principle I agree but on the same freaking video? If you repeat the joke at school you’re at least gonna get some attention/reaction if you do it on the same video at best you will get one person saying you stole the joke.

GuestNo, you get upvotes/thumbsup/whatever other scrotebrained form of validation your website uses. You’d expect that to happen, but it doesn’t, people keep updooting the same joke over and over.
I’ve considered making an account on reddit that will literally only reply variations of the template "That’s a huge red flag, sounds like you dodged a bullet" and see how long it takes me to get to like 10k karma, because that’s something that people will upvote no matter how much they see.-

there are GPT3 schizobabble bots, and people who imitate the bots
there are shills, and people who imitate the shills.
there are smart trolls who satirize it, and there are dumb trolls who only amplify it.
and then there are the people who are too dumb to tell the difference.in general the result is the loss of trust, attention, lower intellectual investement, lower effort, garbage posts.

GuestPick any ultra-popular 2016 or earlier video that doesn’t get views anymore (so top comments are 4-5 years old) and you’ll find standard, opinionated comments.

GuestDo you mean by like 1980’s standards when it was mostly academics? Anyway, it’s unfixable as a whole, but giving thought-out responses and arguing in good faith usually gets you somewhere. Most people respond fairly to that, and the ones that don’t you can just ignore. Ditching terrible forum (meaning the big ones) helps too. If you do all that and don’t contribute to the problem by posting inane one liners, that’s all you can do.

Guesti think this is the real issue- morons have always existed, but finding spaces that don’t specifically cater to cloutchasing/attention whoring or actual monetization with systems like reddit’s upvotes bringing the most popular comments to the top is getting harder and harder. as "social media" goes, image boards and (bizarrely) tumblr are as close as you get. shilling and building up a dumb internet persona still exist on these platforms but it isn’t baked directly into how they work.

GuestHonestly, we’re just at the end of an era in internet discourse right now. Everything seems really stale, lame, stupid, etc etc because we’ve basically been using the same freaking memes for the last 3-4 years. This cycle happens over and over again and the language/memes are refreshed with a totally new layer of irony and conceit; usually after the discourse becomes so "normified" that you can’t escape scrotebrained meme formats anywhere.
The first era I was really aware of was the rage-comics/cake is a lie/advice animals era. I was about 16 at the time and saw the natural growth of these memes from this platform gradually take over the internet as a whole. Eventually, LULZ got sick of the memes they created being used by scrotes but by that point the damage was already done, we had to endure about 2-3 years of "internet discourse" just being scrotebrains posting Rick Astley for "epic trolls" and misusing memes that started on /b/.
I think we’re quickly approaching the end of this era. Yes it freaking sucks, but I’ll remind you that it also freaking sucked when Adam Sandler was wearing a "YOU MAD?" t-shirt and every freaking moron was shouting "THE CAKE IS A LIE".

For real though, I think the prevalence of this format, especially the common use of "no one:" speaks to the oversocialization of its users. It reflects a need to knowingly recognize something as outside the majority opinion, for fear of being rejected if they express it ardently without that layer of distancing, or more commonly simply to ridicule that idea for being something "no one" else would express.

The amount of interesting videos I find in a year went from 100s to 10 max. I don’t even remember when was a last time a subbed to a new channel. All my subs go back to early 2010s. Same trends can be observed in any other "big tech" social media platforms. They had potential to improve human condition intead they only making it worse in any way possible.

GuestThey recently changed something about their algorithm. For years it was exactly as you said. 10 new interesting videos a year at most and suddenly it’s recommending me excellent channels with between ~25k-125k views. I honestly think some monkey bonked up and they will reverse this soon enough but holy shit it feels so nice to find new interesting shit again.

GuestIs there actually a place where we can have normal discussion? Because man, even search engines are turning up a shit number of results these days exactly as pointed out.
Sometimes it really does feel like it’s not JUST the shifting of the generations, the billions added to the network (even if that obviously has it’s impact) – but that there is literal effort to stifle decent discussion.

Guest>Yeah but that free(er) internet puts by association nex to some questionable shit.
What do you think the old internet was? From the age of BBS’ over forums to now. International free speech comes with free speech that someone sees as "questionable", no doubt.> Is there really no active, but ‘lesser known’ on the CN?
Are you looking for the singular cool kids club? What is like one part of the old internet is the Debian or Gentoo forums. Also not corporate. Also not really focused on shilling idols and astroturfing products.
Another part is like Pleroma and the fediverse. Contains everything including aforementioned "questionable shit" to an extent. Maybe some German guy brags about how much he likes freaking his 14 year old girlfriend. And an Asian person might have a recipe how to cook dog liver.

GuestYeah you’re right, I’m looking for something that by definition doesn’t exist. It existed in illusion because a larger % of early internet adopters were people likely to be somewhat interested in technology and computers, whereas now it’s free access anywhere, anytime, by anyone.
Cheers anyways for the responses.

GuestYes, you can’t return to having ONLY the people who can configure a modem from CLI AND additionally think doing so is worthwhile (instead of watching TV or whatever).
But of course the people in certain places still are largely the people interested in… IDK, car engines. Or military weapon systems. Or Linux distributions. Or non-smartphone flash photography.
> In my experience the fediverse and anything similar is always overrun by either extremely leftwing or rightwing scrotebrains living out their fetishes.
Obviously that’s also a thing. Burgers gonna burger. So do the French. So would the Chinese if they were present on the fediverse.> Are there any worthwhile instances?
To do what? Personally I go with the anime free speech zone. Easy to find.Yes, you’ll get politics, but if you want you can techpost about how stupid the design of a new car engine is or show off the key weaknesses in the flight characteristics of your homemade quadcopter with kitchen knife rotor blades as as easily as you can worship anime tiddies. And it is possible that you get related talk.

GuestThe problem lies in rating systems themselves, people are dumb and want like number go bigger, well thought out comments don’t lead to like number go bigger, for that you need to appeal to lowest common denominator, and since so many people chase LNGB, it leads to a flood of comments like picrel. Hearts don’t help either, as they lead to people sucking off the uploader in hopes of getting one, further pooping up comment sections. This is why i like this site so much, the lack of ratings means the only thing you can get from a post is a (You), which, unlike likes, aren’t all worth the same, the most valuable (You) is a well thought up reply, least valuable is a l33t h4x0r doxxing you, which isn’t likely to happen, most likely if your post is shit someone will call you a scrote and move on with their lives, this leads to more interesting discourse. The lack of accounts also helps, because since no one knows how you look like or what you’re interested in, they can only attack your post. TL;DR We need anonimity in every type of site to foster interesting discussions

>At this point the normies enter. What’s interesting with this previous cycle was that normies didn’t actively adopt Pepe/Wojak memes, since there was an active attempt to label them as "white supremacy". What they did adopt however was the tone of those memes. Despair, clown-world; albeit a watered down bastardization of those emotions, but those emotions none-the-less.
I disagree with this. I do think that what happens with the normization of a meme is not the adoption of the emotion, but rather the co-option of the aesthetic: normies almost by definition lack the emotional depth to fully interiorize the concepts expressed by the original memes, but they happily latch on the superficial appearance of the meme, strip it down, and wear its skin. I do believe they either just pretend or don’t even understand. I think no other event in recent history demonstrated this as the "nerd" fad fueled by The Big Bang Theory; I won’t spend any word for this or I might start foaming from the mouth, we all know what happened.
The last phase in the life cycle of a meme is the corruption of the meme to the point that the connection with the emotion is severed, and with the arise of new circumstances this dictates the necessity for a new meme, and the cycle starts again.-

GuestI think the core of the problem is that they lack basic self reflection and critical thinking skills. Else they wouldn’t trust the scientists, the experts, the government, the media, the education system and all the rest of it.
they have a cognitive dissonance and egoistic collectivist bias so deep that they will basically sacrifice anything in order not to face the truth and have to think and reflect on it. their whole ego is tied up in collective identity and they are completely terrified of the though of standing outside the popular collective narrative, terrified that their peers might be upset and and dislike them, so much that they willingly inject themselves and their children with an unknown liquid with unknown side effects and unknown ingredients made by big pharmaceutical corporations that makes their profits from people being ill.
