Guestevery year on january 1st I create 365 folders named with the format of YYYYMMDD.
Then throughout the year whatever I do for the day goes into its corresponding folder.-

GuestI save the newest version of the file for that day. this way for things that take multiple days I have progressive backups, and can see the older versions and how they have changed over time.

Guestwhy is music and memes small M and rest begin with capital?
btw FUCK any Linux software that automatically creates any of these folders and that includes distro installers.
I do NOT want any folders in my home folders beginning with caps. I will store images in my images folder, I do not want a Pictures folder or even a pictures folder. I want my documents in documents, NOT Documents.

~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
Make the names in that file lowercase and your system defaults will change.

GuestHave a "Data" drive or partition.
Inside of it a list of folders for each large category (for example "Books", "Games", "Programs", etc.)
Every folder ever is categorized as "category folder" (which always has an underscore in front to put it on top) and "item folder" (which is just a folder with the name of the item).
For example:
>D:_Video_Movies_To Watch
>D:_Video_MoviesAmerican Psycho (2000)
As you can see, each folder’s subfolders can be categories (prioritized on top when in alphabetical order) or items (listed below).
If possible, item folders and files should go as deep in the subfolder tree as possible, so they’re subdivided into their own specific category, rather than all together in a big general one. This isn’t that important if you only have a handful of files in the general category, but if you have hundreds it might be necessary in order to find what you need quicker.
To prioritize some category folders over other category folders I put 3 underscores in front of them (and if I want even more I can add 5, 7, etc.) For example:
>D:_Video___Mine
>D:_Video_Anime
>D:_Video_Documentaries
>D:_Video_Internet Videos
>D:_Video_Movies
>D:_Video_Tutorials
>D:_Video_TV ShowsElement folders that are being added over time have the following naming convention:
>YYMMDD – Name
Where the date is the day the project has begun.
If it’s important to maintain the order between multiple projects started the same day you can add a lowercase letter after the date (211002a) or 2 other numbers (21100301) or add either after a dash like so:
>211002 – a – Name
>211003 – 01 – Name
The last method is great if you don’t want all of the elements to have the inter-day order.
If the end date is also important it’s added after the start date like so:
>YYMMDD – YYMMDD – Name1/3

GuestThe Data folder also has a "_Documents" folder (where I keep my documents), which is separate from the system’s "Documents" in the user folder, since that’s often a mess of shit that programs install for you, and I want to keep things separate.
2/3
The desktop is completely covered by a program called "Fences" by Stardock, which gives me containers forthe files on the desktop, as well folders linked from wherever.
I have all new files go to an empty container, and I have containers showing me the data drive and the 3 folders on the Desktop, so I can easily drag and drop between them and work on their contents without having to navigate to them.3/3
Admittedly I’m not always perfectly rigorous (laziness mainly), but that’s the system.
If you have any question, I’m happy to talk about my autism for as long as you want.Woke af. Thanks

GuestIn the data drive there’s a category folder called "_Archive" that’s essentially my collection of files, subdivided by topic.
This integrates what would be my LULZ folder.
For example:
D:_Archive_Technology_ProgrammingBjarne Memes
(the last folder could be made into a category, but since it’s not important and they’re not subdivided into subcategories, I chose to keep it as an element)
Keep in mind that this is separate from my "_Programming" folder (where I keep what I use FOR programming, such as projects and resources) that lives on the data drive.
This "_Programming" folder in "_Archive" is for things that are ABOUT programming, such as memes, funny images, interesting/curious documents, etc.
This separation goes for programming and a few other main activities (for example the main music folder holds the music I listen to, while the music folder in the archive holds stuff about the musicians, genres, etc.)
Some things have a main folder but not one in the archive (for example my "_Finances" folder), and vice versa (the "_Vehicles" folder). The Data folder also has a "_Documents" folder (where I keep my documents), which is separate from the system’s "Documents" in the user folder, since that’s often a mess of shit that programs install for you, and I want to keep things separate.

GuestI have a few category folders in my "_Downloads" folder (also in the data drive, like the "_Desktop" folder, redirected there from their usual location in the user folder), such as "_Torrent", "_SLSK", etc. but I download most files on the desktop, which by default contains only 3 folders:
>_
This is always empty and I use it for when I need a temporary folder to put some files I’m working on in the short term
>_DSKTP
This holds the things that I need to work on ASAP (so I want to keep them on the desktop to not forget about them) but that I’m not currently working on
>_Sorter
This contains 2 subfolders
>_Batches
Every day (or whenever needed) I take all the files from my desktop or from my phone’s downloads folder, or whatever, and group them in a neat package inside of this folder (so they look like "211002 Desktop" "211003 Android" "201003 Cousin’s drive")
>_Categories
Which contains shortcuts to the most used category folders and subfolders around the computer.
Whenever I need to sort my files, I pick a batch, open it alongside the "_Categories" folder and start dragging/cutpasting.
The most used dozen or so folders have a shortcut in the favourites/links so I have them always visible to the left of every folder (I’m on W7, not sure on other OSes).
I also have some of them in my taskbar’s quick launch for ease of access even when I don’t have folders open or in front.

GuestFinder on MacOS has tagging built-in for files.
This is excellent, tagging over folders always. More should do this. You can create "Smart Filters" and tag files of specific type in specific folder automatically etc. or write scripts to tag your files automatically.

Guesthttps://i.imgur.com/ifnkHhD.gif
drive set aside for downloads
name files with format:
>YYYYMMDD – <tags>
where tags are just space-separated keywords that let me search it easier e.g.
>ika musume computer typing gif cute funny
usually 6-10 depending on how detailed i want it to be. then i just use the program ‘everything’ to search shit easily
probably some explorer replacement that would let me search like ‘everything’ does but ive used it for a long time and im used to the workflow/keybinds now -

Guestthrowing everything into docs/videos/pictures and some important things on the desktop (like todo lists for everything)
then subfolders in any of the above for active projects, so like user > pictures > cat-1 > rat > cat > cat-1
then user > pictures > cat-2
or user > pictures > cat-1 or cat-2 > rat > cat > cat-1, cat-2, cat-3 > rat-1then, when the drive fails, throw it into a pile which boots them all up for a day or 2 whenever a new drive is connected, and they sit there forever
hopefully to never wear out
good luck to the person trying to sort through my files but theyre there and archived -

Guest>I buy a new hard drive every year 1tb seems to be fine.
>Every new year I create a label both physical and digital like for example "2021"
>Each day is numbered by date, "10.3" and copy it from my desktop to the corresponding hard drive if I have nothing for that day I delete said folder from my desktop.
>At the end of the year the drive(s) go into cold lead storage.
>I have drives with emulators and roms, wow private servers, versions of Minecraft, versions of windows and Linux. Pdf files of the Bible, languages, books like Harry Potter, physics, science, math, medical papers, etc anything I think interesting if society falls, at least knowledge will be passed on in some form.
I have printed books with sata interface code, how to generate electricity, how to view the files all stored in ext4 a tape drive with drivers and source code printed in a book to view ext4 files. A Linux PC etc in vacuum storage.
One day before I die I will donate my life’s work to a museum with instructions that these go into a digital bunker. This way when humanity begins again we don’t have to start from scratch. I also have everything backed up on tape drive.-

GuestI take pictures of things people take for granted. Videos etc. I have archives of thingiverse and Wikipedia. 3d printers, and information about them. Manuals on internal combustion engines, dielectric batteries, canning, curing, cooking, creating antibiotics. It’s by no means comprehensive, but I’m hoping that if it’s ever needed, humanity has a running start.

GuestSchematics on how to get the computer to work etc. Capacitors die so I had to figure out how to both make it work but how to get shift registers etc in the future to work. They might have to use vacuum tubes again so it’s very clear how to build a working computer. How to make an x86_64 chip. All this is stored in a bomb shelter.
