GuestNot sure, but when the Anglo-Saxons arrived the Britons were struggling in a war against the Picts. The siss Hengist and Horsa were invited by the Britons to help fight off the Picts, or so the story goes. Also, the Romans had recently left Britain and the Britons may have become dependent on them, which is why they were unable to defend themselves against anyone.

>Did we not pour down out of our native forests and reclaim a degenerate Europe where civilisation, under effete Mediterranean dregs, was dying out? My God! The very name of France comes from our huge yellow-bearded Franks, and in Spain they call a gentleman a hidalgo — hijo del goda — son of the Goth — the huge blue-eyed, conquering Nordick! Fancy a world without Clovis — or its Charlemagne — the Teuton Karlomann, and the Vikings and the Norsemen…ho for the frozen seas and the epick of sleet and blood, strange lands and far wonders! Greenland, Iceland, Normandy, England, Sicily — the world was ours, and the mountainous billows heaved with the Cyclopean rhythm of our barbarick chants and shouts of mastery! Art? By Woden, were not our deeds and battles, our victories and empires, all parts of a poem more wonderful then aught which Homer cou’d strike from a Grecian lyre? Ho! Yaah! We are men! We are big men! We are strong men, for we make men do what we want! Let no man balk us, for our gods are big gods, and our arms and our swords are tough! Hrrrr! The stones of towns fall down when we come, and crows love us for the feast of dead men we give them. The lands shake with the thump of our feet, and hills grow flat when we stride up and down them. The floods are dry when we have drunk them, and no beasts are left when we have killed and gorged. By day we kill and seize, at dusk we feast and drink, by nights we snore and dream big dreams of strange seas we shall sail, old towns we shall burn, stout men we shall slay, wild beasts we shall hunt, deep cups we shall drain, fat boars we shall tear limb from limb with our hands, and gnaw with our sharp teeth. Great Thor, but this is life! We ask no more! We know the cool of deep woods, and the spell of their gloom and the things void of name that lurk or may lurk in them.

GuestThe hidalgo etymology is simply wrong, although Spanish aristocrats did use to ostentatiously insist upon their goth (and roman, mind you) high heritage.
Lovecringe and deluded pill nonetheless

GuestHidalgo literally means "hijo de algo" son of something. Which implies he has some privileges just for being the son of someone.

Many such cases. Sad.

GuestRoman army leaves. There’s no military social structure that replaces or develops fast enough. Celts in the backwaters start making hill forts from hundreds of years prior again. Germanics come with more modern tactics honed against the Romans for centuries. Imagine if a Greek phalanx army had to fight a peak Roman one. Basically that

GuestBy that time Britain was in an utter state of chaos and disrepair they basically just invited the Anglo-Saxon-Frisian chieftains, who took advantage of the power vacuum. Pretty much an early version of the Glorious Revolution

GuestFor example, London at that time was already long abandoned before the Saxons took over. The people who didn’t move to Gaul (or weren’t able to) moved westward to avoid barbarian raids and stuff.

They didn’t. They just came out on top of Alba and got to put their name on the whole messy Scot-Pict-Briton-Angle kingdom.

GuestThe name was taken from Latin usage because it was Rex Scotorum et Pictorum so simply because the name Scot came first.
And Pictish is Scottish Gaelic and it is impossible it came from Ireland, with no evidence at all supporting it.
And the dalriatan country did not come from Ireland by any contemporary evidence.-

But, to be fair, ancient anglo Saxon gravesite DNA matched closest to Icelandics, Dutch, and Danes.

GuestI mean, Germanicus killed a lot of Germans but Germanic people destroyed Rome in the end. It’s not really so cut and dry as med vs Nord.
LULZ just has a terrible tract record of threads devolving into med vs germ but honestly things are much more nuanced than that.

GuestCaesar used Germans as his shock cavalry and so did many other Roman generals by hiring them as auxillaries. Germans and Romans had a lot of interactions that were positive.
It’s almost as bad as how people paint Celtic and Roman interactions as one sided despite celtic societies blending in and trading quite a bit with Roman. Many old Celtic cities like Milan became Roman and Austrian Celts supplies a lot of metal for Rome.

Cisalpine Gauls weren’t granted citizenship until much later though, even if they’ve been subjugated for a long time. That’s just the closest non-Italic, barbarian ethnic group. Germanics were treated with much more contempt. -

GuestYeah, but in the end it was mixed. Germanics ended up being the core of their armies. Most people in the ancient world were incredibly xenophobic and racist compared to modern people. Reading Greek philosophers and historians shows a group of people obsessed with race and lineage.
