Not sure, but when the Anglo-Saxons arrived the Britons were struggling in a war against the Picts. The siss Hengist and Horsa were invited by the Britons to help fight off the Picts, or so the story goes. Also, the Romans had recently left Britain and the Britons may have become dependent on them, which is why they were unable to defend themselves against anyone.

The name was taken from Latin usage because it was Rex Scotorum et Pictorum so simply because the name Scot came first.
And Pictish is Scottish Gaelic and it is impossible it came from Ireland, with no evidence at all supporting it.

Caesar used Germans as his shock cavalry and so did many other Roman generals by hiring them as auxillaries. Germans and Romans had a lot of interactions that were positive.
