I remember loving the intro to TFC.
Also played a bit of megaTF, but that was a weird derivative with airstrikes and Beavis & Butthead soundbites in it.

          >Does anyone remember the original quake capture the flag mod?

Hell yes. All those single player maps retrofitted for CTF. Nothing more satisfying than getting that cap or defending the shit out of your flag. Was amazing when they added a rune mod too so you had crazy runes like the Mars extra damage or the drunk playing upside down rune. What a game. Quakeworld was also the spawn of classes and classic team fortress if I’m not mistaken. Detpacks for days.

You can still experience it if you only browse boomer hobby forums (example: old tech, cars diy, fishing) that don’t have sjw members. It was pretty much like that back in the day, nothing else. None of the social media bs.

It was like LULZ. No bans, no censorship, banter everywhere, no sensitive snowflakes. Why do you think i am still here?

        just to suffer

CS 1.6 is still played in Balkans and Eastern Europe.

The first results on any search engines for Holocaust were revision sites. Google video top videos were all 911 truth and conspiracy docs. If your kid started toe walking after their MMR at 15 months you could actually find out what caused it. I feel sorry for midwits that only remember games and stupid shit. Their used to be actual information out there.

Yes, but CPMA was gay. OSP was a much better duel game. CPMA was better for TDM, but not as good as qw, so overall just an inferior game, even though I played it more than OSP and qw combined.

Yes, played that quite a bit.

Yes I remember that. The only reason they even caught him is because he turned himself in. I remember getting a copy of the leaked code off UseNet and the code was such a mess… I don’t have it anymore though, but there’s tons of leaked HL2 code out there.

CAL/CPL tournies were trying to push people from 1.5 onto 1.6. Took me like a day to get my registration (which is why i have a 5dig), because the service was such crap. And it was so buggy and shitty that people would have to uninstall steam to reinstall 1.5 to play games. Was a mess for months, and a horrible experience for early adopters. People swore they’d never use it.
Then newfags came in and didn’t know how shit Valve was and so just ended up using it, and now they have a monopoly, basically. So that’s cool.

This is what mostly made the old internet what it was. Computers were $1k or more and an internet connection was a luxury not a utility for the common person.

In the beginning people shared some common characteristics, at least to a certain degree.

Ubiquitous smart phones for even the dregs of society was the dagger in the heart of the old internet. It became much more DIVERSE. Now every shitbag with a Twitter account is spewing diarrhea into the ether.

A major feature of the old internet was right-wingers hadn’t yet discovered it. People that used it were usually pretty educated, intelligent, center to left-wing. It wasn’t until the 2010s that right-wingers really started flooding onto the internet in numbers and everything went downhill from there

Mixture of the above 2 posters. A lot of you are millennials so they dont realize how much the internet really was like the wild west back then.
No regulation, authorities were too stupid to catch people mostly.
Computers were expensive and internet was 100% superfluous for normal everyday life so it filtered out only people who wanted/needed it.
Even games were better on console until like ps2 era so it filtered out all the soijack gamers and it was just master race gamers.

Compared to today every melanoid and grandma has internet in their pocket. Ever single person is a "gamer" so they have to make games so boring to not offend one special snowflake.

Also no corporations was nice. Now every corp is trying to track all your info so they can figure out how to get you to consoom more.

If you haven’t played UT99 on dialup with a CRT in the basement, with a PS/2 ball mouse and mechanical keyboard from IBM, and those hyper generic plastic speakers with the volume treble and bass knobs, You haven’t experienced the old internet.
Mistyping an address didn’t give you "oops sorry", it gave you illegal imagery, extreme scat porn, gore, and who knows what, all in glorious frame gif’s or apng’s.

It was glorious. It was just communication the way it was meant to be. Like the time when everyone had land lines and had to memorize phone numbers. You had to ask your friends mom if your friend could come to the phone. These days it’s all whores and begging for money. People are barely communicating with each other anymore
People are talking sure, but there’s no conversation. Sad. And it’s gonna get even worse, so stay tuned for that. Or even better, don’t. The internet is over. This is something else now. Pray Jesus gives you a sign so may find him anon. Good luck

        >Imagine if the barrier to entry was intelligence and a PC rather than a mobile phone or tablet.
The internet was genuinely better pre-2008 for that very reason, and while it may not have been very noticeable at the time, it was in hindsight, that you would discuss topics on forums or IRC, read content on peoples personal websites e.g. on Geocities, and it was quite obvious you were interacting or reading content from another White man
The people who ended up populating social media thanks to smartphones, were the ones back then who had very little interest in the internet or PC’s, now they are addicts who literally can’t form an opinion without being told what it is by the twitterverse or the reddit narrative.
Then of course once the internet population increased, the corporations saw it was a market, and that’s when things began getting pozzed. They try to keep the image of a lot of these centralized sites like reddit/imgur/twitter/etc as a free exchange of ideas and content but you can see how controlled it is purely by how corporate friendly it is, unpopular opinions are hidden/banned, risky content is removed, etc. It used to be something of a time honoured tradition to get goatse’d for example, in recent years on the centralized corporate friendly website, such shenanigans have been replaced with being rick rolled, absolutely G rated bullshit, and while i won’t really lament the loss of being tricked into staring into the meaty void of an anonymous mans hyper stretched anus, the fact that it’s gone missing from the everyday internet and more importantly, what it’s been replaced with, is a good example of how the internet has changed for the worse

          Notice a pattern here?
Dudes create their own shit, get flooded with retards, leave, migrate further away to uncharted territory, make things work there, retards flood in, repeat.
I think this made people eventually move away from africa (assuming that the theory of people originating from there is correct), and now when everything works the retards are flooding in..

Yeah it is interesting the parallels you can draw between RL and the rise of the internet through the 90s to present, the internet is like a sped up version of what happened to western society

So white flight right? I want to read Slaughter of Cities by EMJ. garden gnomes move diverse folk into big cities causing whites to flee to the suburbs. Nigs destroy the city and lower property value. They eventually cause black flight where blacks follow whites to the suburbs. Meanwhile in the city, garden gnomes buy up properties for cheap and gentrify the area and turn them into hipster homes. Leftist whites then pay a premium to not live around diverse folk in their hipster areas. Even the most staunch leftist white does not want to live around diverse folk.

It was smarter and more detached from the normie world. We used to have interesting conversations about abstract things and just generally commentate or spectate the mainstream society.

Now that all you fucking retards are here the level of discussion is fucking Facebook tier and everyone is a slacktivist taking sides on every issue.

      Related to your picture:

I think they’re just on such a fast release cycle (cod every year, bf every other year, etc) combined with the engines changing constantly and the games being throwaway when the new one comes out just makes it pointless to try to learn how to mod newer games.

Oh shush. I already get overly excited when modern games get mods like "FO4 realistic guns" "Breakpoint Spartan Realism Mod" which were the norm back in the day, each even moderately popular game had those almost 2 months after launch.

On a sidenote: I’m of the opinion that player profiles ruined games. Remember doing BF1942, people doing all sorts crazy shit: tanks on planes, riding wings, taking risks, because failure, K/D, accuracy etc all were zero after the match? You already saw this was starting to be an issue in Bf2.

This is what made Counter Strike so appealing to me and it’s what makes me instantly drop so many modern games. It was like the gaming equivalent of LULZ:
                      >you hop on and instantly join a bunch of people already in the middle of playing
                      >everyone is EQUAL – even in your first round you can buy a deagle that will 1 shot anyone if you can aim
                      >at the end of the game everything is reset, it swaps to a different map and you do it all over again

Just like LULZ where you instantly join a bunch of people already having discussions, everyone is anon so you’re all equal, you can make good points with your first post, then after a while the thread is eventually bumped off page 10, archived, then deleted, and you swap to a thread on a different topic and start all over again.

LULZ is basically the closest you can get in the 2020s outside of fossilized boomer forums/communities for niche interests and hobbies. Firearms forums are usually pretty old internet tier and pretty funny.

You have no idea, it was over by then. There was a time long ago when you could boot up into your very own operating system and connect the the fundamentals of the internet through a local dialup nerd. It was all text based but it evolved quickly from there to Netscape and a few other open source providers of web browsers, it was amazing.

Looking at pics like these gives me a special feeling. When you look at the table, the "chair", and the half disassembled, already janky-looking PC, it feels like that’s a complete picture. Yep, everything is makeshift and poor, nothing to see here. Except the you can’t disregard all the math and engineering that went into the invention of that machine. That disk drive out in the open and tilted at an angle? I bet it still works just fine. Why? Because there were so many failsafes and redundancy build into both the reading mechanism AND the data encoding that you could shake the fucking table and it would probably still work. And on some level, I think everyone who owned a PC in such living conditions were at least somewhat aware of this fact. That the machine so many would look down was the marvel of whatever shitty house they lived in. Whereas people take so many things for granted today, back in the day there was something unique about having computers in any household. It was a different time.

      >got internet in ’92
      >saw it destroyed more and more over the years
Imagine television/library without garden gnomes and advertising. That was the internet. It was white kids and Japanese kids fucking around trying to troll one another in every way possible. It was a time where hacking was still done by anons and not by alphabets, it was a time where free meant virus, p2p meant free and a time of flamewars and forums.
My first porn was a 1,2mb video of a guy with a nose around his neck, being straddled by a redhead dominatrix. I had to leave the computer on for an entire night to download a full album, and then in the morning id find it wasnt the music i wanted but rather some weird bootleg music from Poland or Russia. Ive seen pictured load bit by bit, and the earliest websites introduced me to Berserk and other good stuff. The mediocre 4chuck we have today pales in comparison to the freedom and the wealth of information we had at our disposal. I was 12 and could use Altavista to effectively download childporn since i was searching for girls my age.

The world was our fucking oyster.

Then garden gnomes brought in the normies and everything changed. Now im stuck here with you two digit iq mongoloids; having the same discussion over and over educating generation after generation that Hitler was indeed right.

I was poor so if I wanted to play a new game, like simcity 3, I had to go on IRC and network with some seedy characters who would then give me an account on their FTP server.

Magical. Connecting to internet wasn’t cheap and it was totally an unknown territory. You can still kinda experience it with the deepweb, which is the unindexed pages of the internet – same with onion sites. Though this experience is now being affected by the knowledge you have of the internet and what you are supposed to do with it.

It was like leaving the starting village in a brand new video game, you really don’t know how the game works or what are the mechanics, and how large the wilderness is, what’s in it and how it works. Now if you did it, it’s like you played the game for years and a new DLC map was released, it wouldn’t be as unknown because of your prior game-knowledge.

      Comparatively?
Heaven, back when 240p was considered good video quality. We weren’t even nearly as filled with bots, shit was gold man. Good memes, everyone at least trying to be original rather then using the same long dead template (2016 memes are still active)

Normies actually ruined the internet, corporate monopolies are the norm now. I’d give up everything to go back to those days

User-friendliness was non-existent and that made it so, so fucking good.

It was almost impossible to get banned from anything except some forums, and even then the rules were much, much more lenient on even the most censor-happy places than they are today basically anywhere other than LULZ.

Hell, even LULZ itself had less censorship when it was young.

Also everyone was just more chill, now there’s this hard schizm between lefties and everyone else and it’s even present in fucking /gif/. That never used to be the case.

It was so hard to find shit since search engines basically didn’t exist, but because of that it was like exploring in the wild. Just… So fucking good.

It was literally as if the whole internet was LULZ, it was fucking magical.

      The old internet was amazeballs.

You had to know what an IP address to join any multiplayer game.

The barriers to entry were high, no newfags.

you actually had to squeeze the lemon (56K internet, shitty sites, no videos everywhere, images scrolled to load) to get a few dropplets of juice and they were juicy.

Now everything is instant and we’re not grateful.

it’s nice to see some things haven’t changed though, like the ease of setting up networks and customer support. i tried contacting microsoft recently after i couldn’t figure out how to stop a computer immediately waking up from sleep when connected to a lan. there advice was

This thread is literally making me tear up. Fuck, it’s never coming back. Probably only going to get worse. I’ve been on a computer since childhood in the early 90s. My family always loved electronics and tech so I always had up to date computers and internet since I was born. I literally started on MSDOS thanks to my Dad. I literally have been on computers my whole life. Even before I could read. God damnit what has the internet become. I have a career from home because my Dad had the forsite that computers and internet were the future. I want to go back.

No moderators anywhere. No way to track anyone. People had ‘home pages’ on places like Anglefire. Normies creeping in from Web.tv. Deja News. No Google. Search engines were easy to manipulate. Could hack Dmoz and Go.com and swap out URLs to anything for the lulz. Dotcom bubble, could get a job at any company if you knew basic HTML.

For keeping in touch with RL friends, i liked ICQ, i could never understand why people started preferring MSN Messenger and other similar programs (note: programs, not apps, people didn’t call everything an ‘app’ back then) with their bloated UI
For internet friends, i liked IRC, i remember using mIRC on windows and having various themed versions that had cool extra elements to add to the relatively bland chat box, show what music was playing, all that shit. On Linux i liked irssi for console, xchat when in the desktop environment
I actually feel like the always on, always connected nature of the internet now has ruined the social aspect, despite ‘social media’ being abundant. Back in the day, you’d connect to the net, and connect to your ICQ or IRC networks, with the express goal of wanting to talk to people, which after connecting you’d do. I remember my IRC channels would have the same group of people all start connecting around 6pm and we’d all talk into the night.
Now with shit like social media, it’s just people throwing out random comments to be liked later on by people, even replying to comments is less of a discussion and more of just a separate statement being added to the mix.

When I was about 13, I discovered a white supremacist chat room on yahoo. This was permitted at the time, cancel culture didn’t exist. I went in the chat and larped as a melanoid to troll the neonazis. Then I proceeded to download nu metal songs off limewire at 28kbps. TOTSE was the only forum I really spent any time on. That’s where I found the anarchist cookbook and am erotic story of man who had sex with a dolphin. I wish I had been a little older at the time. I maybe would have made more productive use of the internet.

A lot of it is still around. But unless you are trying to find super specific information, or information that is just not popular, you will never be able out of the current bubble that the search engines try to entrap you in. Bow down to the algorithm.

It was slow and someone using the phone cuts it off. It’s a lot more awesome to hangout with your friends IRL who live close by. Play on the rich friend’s console (PS2 usually). Taking turns playing Tekken and whatever games he has. Play basketball with the bros at the local basketball court or someone’s garage. Go to internet cafe with them after school to play Counter Strike and yell obscenities at each other.

Search engines actually worked and were not censored. Social media in its current form was non-existent so normies and politicians did not give a fuck about the web. Also we had IRC, ICQ, Napster, Kazaa and other P2P solution (with all the fucked up porn an 12 year old’s developing mind clearly does not need – imagine everything that is now pushed to the darkweb at your fingertip, so you could feel even a bigger loser watching someone your age getting head from an adult woman), FTP servers, LAN parties (GTA1, Carmageddon1, CS, Quake1-3), LAN caves, Warez, stack of 1.44MB floppy discs in your desk drawers, HDD mobile racks to combine the 100+ rar files you and your buddies downloaded over a week on 56.6k modem, 4x CD burners cost about 700 USD (inflation adjusted). IT and gaming as a hobby was a fringe group interest and carried a stigma. Good times.
