Can pseudoscience still be valuable to human society?

Of course, is this a real question?

Well I guess it is then, pseudoscience can be, but is not necessarily, useful to society, it wouldn’t if humans were perfectly rational actors working together to form a society, but they aren’t, so a well crafted system of false beliefs can do a lot for the ‘health’ of a civilization and the interactions between non-rational actors.

      >self explanatory
these progressive people really are a cult aren’t they
the answer to your question is no btw, pseudoscience consumes societal resources that would be better employed for actual science.

      >valuable to human societ
What do you mean by that?

As evidenced by Ted K., you can also make a compelling argument that science isn’t valuable to human society.
And before responding, note that I said compelling – many people agree – no that (You) will find it convincing.

      >science
      >publish or perish model
      >many "scientists" abuse statistics in order to do politics
      >others are forced to make up results so they don’t lose their shit research "jobs"

at this point the only difference between science and pseudoscience is political, since true unbiased research is rare today and the publish or perish shit model forces many to keep publishing useless shit. In the other hand pseudoscience at least can be found to be somewhat entertaining.

This is your brain on postmodernism and critical theory. Don’t let it happen to you. Critical Theory, not even once.

Reminder that the time of year you were born in mildly correlates to various factors, so knowing a person’s star sign has valid predictive power, and that this was the actual basis for astrological prediction before it was taken over by the ‘new-age’ crowd and commercial journalists.

Soviets were very interested in astrology and effects of sun cycle etc on prenatal development, disease, heart attacks, etc. If you look at magnetobiology a lot of it is plausible if you’re LULZ and not /soi/.

astrology is much of a science field as astronomy, both aren’t scientifically rigorous enough and experimentation is very limited

pseudoscience is good for entertainment purposes only.

    • #55005

yes, here’s a real world example:
in my country the national health service offers homoeopathy for free (or did offer, they might have stopped), which of course works no better than placebo.
But placebos actually work pretty well for treating many patients, especially if the symptoms are anxiety related or psychosomatic, and homoeopathic medicine is cheap and has no side effects because it’s just water. Due to ethical reasons, doctors aren’t allowed to proscribe placebo pills or sham therapies, but they can proscribe homoeopathy, which gives them a loophole enabling them to proscribe placebos where appropriate.
unfortunately reddit atheists don’t understand this and at this point sperg about how homoeopathy is just water and doesn’t do anything.

What is driving the resurgence of astrology, tarot cards, and other assorted quasi-occult mysticism? I feel like this is a symptom of some kind problem in society and failure of its institutions
