While there’s certainly something to be said of modern secular political ideologies allowing for mass death due to cold and unfeeling moral calculations, it’s also just as large, if not larger, of a factor that the technology used to kill people under these regimes was way more advanced than it ever was when religions held serious political power. There’s no saying if Christians or Muslims of the Crusade times would commit a holocaust on the other if they had the means to do so.

honestly, mostly that populations had gotten much much larger since the wars of religion ended.
also its worth examining those numbers a little more closely, the great leap forward and cultural revolution killed perhaps 30-40 million out of 1 billion mostly via famine due to agricultural mismanagement not ideology.
stalin and the soviets killed perhaps as many as 9 million including famine victims. Monstly in political purges aimed at ensuring Stalin remained in control.
Hitler was not in fact explicitly atheistic instead applying a religious fervour to the idea that a nebulous ethnic group had a spiritual destiny to be the master race, its a religion of sorts at its heart.
but between all the ‘atheist ideologies’ we get maybe 70 million dead which is large
but then the 30 years war killed 25% + of the population of germany and that was just one religious war as a percentage of people affected by them religious wars tended to be far more bloody. normalise the figures for population size and everything looks about equal.
