GuestIs it really dying though? Ive been torrenting for years aswell (normie shit like videogames, movies, books, scat porn) and even today i rarely have a problem finding what i need. qBittorrent has an in-built search function with 5 or more pre-installed torrent search engines so i don’t even have to look for the proxies online. I just type the name of the torrent i want and it automatically shows me the results.

GuestThis used to happen to me too. You need to manually disable all antivirus settings, because it scans every single file that’s getting unpacked, which exponentially raises unpacking time. Unless you’re installing some 200gb shit or something. It just takes that freaking long to unpack.

Its definitely past its peak.
Also looking at top releasers they are mostly old school veterans who grew up during internet birth. There are no new blood. When veterans start dying from age i don’t see replacement.-

Not really. I started torrenting 3 years ago, a friend of mine 2 years ago. We both run homeservers. I’m using only public torrents, he’s gone for the private torrent and usenet route (necessary since he also wants german content). He also contributed some changes to the *arr software family. Although we’re both computer scientist, so it’s definitely not an accurate representation of mainstream society, but the 10+ friends& family members who use my server are at least brought into contact to the piracy scene – even if it’s just a bit.

GuestI think it’s the opposite. Overall piracy has grown, but the market and consumption has grown disproportionally more, so a lower percentage of people are pirating, but a higher number overall is doing it. It’s like people saying desktop PCs are dying because they’ve lost massive market share to tablets and smartphones, but the overall market size has grown so much, that desktop PC ownership has only ever increased.

GuestNon-glowing providers don’t make it their business to know what guilty and suspicious behaviour their paying customers are up to. If they don’t keep logs, they physically can’t help law enforcement.
Proving that providers don’t secretly glow is another matter.

Guest>Non-glowing providers don’t make it their business to know what guilty and suspicious behaviour their paying customers are up to.
And neither does Protonmail. Having both guilty and suspicious people along with people who just want to improve their online privacy comes with the territory of running any privacy oriented service. They act and cooperate with authorities if there’s a court order issued by Swiss courts and if Swiss courts have determined that international cases can also fall after their jurisdiction.
https://protonmail.com/blog/transparency-report/
>If they don’t keep logs, they physically can’t help law enforcement.
They don’t, unless it’s determined by the police that you’re breaking laws and there’s a court order involved. If you expect email providers to then act like Tom Hagens or Saul Goodmans and do what those two characters did and help their clients then you’re not living in reality.

GuestNah, it was always shit. Waiting an hour just to start downloading part 1 of 15 was no fun at all. And then you’ll have to pray your download won’t get interrupted, and even when it doesn’t there still was a limit on how fast you can download (and, worse, how much you can download within a given period of time). And by the time they finally fixed their shit no one cared because there were far better alternatives.

GuestThis quote should hang in all the corporate offices and meeting rooms, because clearly the corporate eggheads forgot it. I predict the resurgence of mass piracy soon as we’re going back to the fragmented mess of inconvenient and expensive services that led to piracy in the first place: when Netflix and Steam were the only providers of content, and were cheap too, there wasn’t even the need to pirate, but now everyone else wanted a slice of the pie, so platforms multiplied and prices skyrocketed. I wonder if there will be a protocol that will make bittorrent obsolete as it was to the eD2k protocol back in the day. Also, I miss megaupload.

GuestMy parents taught me how to wire two VCRs together to copy video tapes from blockbuster when I was in kindergarten. Our movie shelf at home was 95% generic tapes with hand written labels. I remember being surprised to see some movies for sale and asking why they had artwork on the jacket. I also remember being mystified to find out what my parents were doing was illegal, despite not hurting anyone. Something that still mystifies me to this day. I have 3 kids and they’re all learning to torrent. I will discourage them from wasting money on music and media that can be obtained for free. Fuck the garden gnomes.

Guestmy granddad had an enormous VHS collection, and later a DVD collection. his living room had these giant glass-front cases full of leather-bound zipper cases of DVDs.
he created a system of organization and you’d come by and look through the paper catalog and find the movie you wanted.
he’d been doing it for so long, there must have been i don’t know, 10,000 movies or something. it was unbelieveable.
he didn’t buy them, he would go to blockbuster once a week or so, rent movies he hadn’t gotten yet, and burn copies of them to add to the collection.
my dad did a similar thing with music, and had these racks of hard drives full of albums.
he showed me limewire as a kid, and i’ve never stopped since. -

Guestgot a question that doesn’t really fit anywhere else
am I just getting unlucky with the sites I’m using when trying to find torrents?
been mostly using rarbg and piratebay but it seems like the rate at which the content I’m looking for has slowed down. used to find stuff the next day or two, and now it’s sometimes almost a month or more.
have uploaders given up or have garden gnomes caught on and found a way to stop it?mainly torrented backroomcastingcouch videos

GuestThis.
Russia is the last bastion of torrenting.
If it’s not on pornolab or rutracker, you will probably only find in some private tracker impossible to get into-

This. Your other last resort is Bitdig and if you can’t find it, on one of these three sites tough luck.

Guest>using the internet to pirate
Back in my day we copied that freaking floppy. That freaking floppy of course was a hugeass 5 1/4" floppy and had the latest C64 warez scene releases on them.
You kids have it easy. -

GuestI had horrible internet growing up relative to what was available. Talking sub 1mbps in 2014. I basically could not stream so I downloaded overnight. Back then it was manual to look up shows, download, organize manually, etc.
Today ibhave decent internet but still want that level of control over my media.
Growing up I dreamed of being able to expose media externally and access it over the internet. I also dreamed of automation to this.
Given scenes normalized naming conventions, it’s way more doable for modern shows
I still torrent, or more accurately, maintain polling infrastructures. Today I run a Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, qbittorrent and Plex all networked together. Radarr polls for movie releases. Sonarr polls for new episodes (can be specific to language too), and Prowlarr automatically manages torrent trackers for both. Radarr and Sonarr send requests to qBittorrent that fires back to Radarr/Sonarr, which then tells Plex new content is up.
I get new push notifications within minutes of new episodes airing on my phone. I can’t remember the last time I sought out new TV shows. Its as comfy as just sitting down and watching TV-

GuestPirated since I was 12. Remember getting a few viruses on my old crappy computer back then too. Only scrotebrained possible thing I’ve done in a long time is torrent from a fit-girl fake site. Game worked and my computer performance remains unchanged so I guess I got lucky. To be honest I don’t really care either because I’ll just do a clean install of winblows again if I by some mistake run into a virus.

Guest>Anyone here been pirating and torrenting since they were kids?
You are a kid though, I’ve been pirating way before torrents were popular.
We used to have (self hosted) FTP servers with pirated content, regular file upload servers who didn’t give a shit about copyright, and of course P2P sharing software like Napster Netwire, Kazaa, BearShear, eMule etc.>I feel like a veteran of a part of the internet thats slowly being purged. Its also funny when normies try to torrent then get a virus instantly.
It’s not really purged, but normies prefer the convenience of streaming services so the demand isn’t as big as it used to be. -

you mean "paid"
vets of the net are boomers with desirable tech skills, and companies pay them well to get shit done
the neo-web is one giant fuck-you subscription service
at some point it became easier to buy a subscription to get shit done than it does to keep trusting Russians to crack the code without stuffing it full of their own spyware crap -

GuestI dont really pirate software since I just use free open source stuff.
And I pay for non-AAA games I think are good because I want to support the industry. I don’t play the typical AAA trash though.
Media usually is virus free. -

Guestit’s crazy how kids don’t know how to pirate nowadays
Even most of the anime fandom outside this site is lazy as hell and instead goes to these random streaming site instead of guaranteed quality and having the choice of subs, encoding, etc. from the a torrent site
