You’re mostly right but it really lasted like 2 centuries at best, there’s a reason all the non niche movies and other media are set in that time period.
Said empire defintiely stopped being "roman" when the namesake city was left behind like an abandoned dump for many other attempted sites until Istanbul was picked.
By the time of the civil wars it was unrecognizable from its post republican "principate" era, it was more an eastern monarchy than an actual empire. Kinda like how the various ‘chinese'(in reality, mostly steppe foreigners) dinasties don’t really count as one state’.
In short that’s why the the christianized zealot state that emerged by the 4th-5th centuries has objectively zero to do with the augustan empire. Even if romaboos insist on shoehorning it in it only makes things worse; said "byzantine" state was more interested in theologian debates than in business to the point it managed to be more backwards than not germanic europe at the time being held back by popery, AKA the dark ages, but even the freaking arabs too. So the medieval greeks had zero or negative economic or military advantages against laughably poor and weak foes and steadily bled out territory by chunks after each round of infighting. No wonder they gained a bad rep when they were actually studied seriously by thinkers in the age of Reason. The only thing these got wrong is that the same was 90% true for the ancient "classical" greeks and italics, too. Objectively speaking the latter were only spared because of "my ancestor :)" cuckery from nearly all enlightenment writers.-
