Entering college a bit late, need a recommendation for a laptop. Right now I am using a really old tower that I will probably sell.
My major is CS if that matters and my budget is probably $1200ish.

Just buy a macbook, spare yourself the second hand embarrassment
tuxedo laptop
Well my uni gave all of the cs students a MacBook pro. It's kind of a jarring change from always using windows but it's quaint. To answer your question literally anything is fine, especially now with the black Friday discounts you can buy a lot of laptops for >300 bucks
Would a $300 laptop actually be good
Kinda my leading choice rn
I was just gonna sell parts on ebay for a bit of money
>old tower that I will probably sell
Who would buy an old tower in this day and age?
>My major is CS
Buy a chromebook and save your money for all those cloud instances you'll be using for real work.
Macbook air if you're a normal human
Something with ryzen 3+ at the very least if you don't want a mac for some god forsaken reason
Seriously brother I hate apple as much as anyone here but their ipad and laptops mog the competition, everyone is going to be using macs and you can even get a student discount
>no numpad
it's trash, simple as that
Huawei Matebook's are very premium and affordable at the same time. (at least in my country)
Literal poorfag cope.
OP needs to buy a macbook, not a shitty knockoff.
Are they comfy to use
Yes, but if possible, buy the 2023 models. 2022 models have a built-in camera above the keyboard instead of the screen. I personally prefer the D14 since it is cheaper and doesn't have a numpad. (i hate numpads)
Get a macbook. With all my complaints aside, most of the time it "just werks" and lets you focus on schoolwork because no gaymes.
Any Lenovo or other Chinese laptop will do just fine and only cost a quarter of 1200$. Or listen to the iTards in this thread and waste all your money on a macbook
You can either get a macbook and have a comfy experience knowing your whole class and professors will be working on macos + never having to worry about battery life or carrying a charger, or you can get a shit windows machine.
T480 with a good aftermarket battery.
Just bought a new IdeaPad for the same purpose a few weeks ago. Linux runs well, if that matters to you, and I'm really happy with it. Also looks really sleek. (I cringe everytime I see a gaming laptop at college.)
im wrapping up 4 years at a t100 us university. i have really enjoyed my m1 mba. probably the best i’ve ever owned and still rocking it. i had a huawei matebook for my first year with windows LTSB and it was okay but honestly the mac is lightyears ahead.
biggest pluses for me
>insane battery life for a laptop, no worrying about finding outlets all day at your school
>extremely fast loading applications like web browser and ide, noticeably faster than matebook/winblows
>unix based system works really well with coding classes
>no fan and no overheating either - completely silent laptop, amazing feat of engineering. laugh at the kids whose laptops take off like jetplanes in your classes
The King.
OP whatever you do, do NOT fall for the Thinkpad meme.
>Entering college a bit late, need a recommendation for a laptop.
Just about any laptop will do. I have an ideaPad with an i3-1115G4 for which I upgraded the RAM and put in a secondary SSD. Also zip tied a USB dock to a laptop stand and use it with an external monitor. If I ever get around to doing CUDA, then I'll dust off my gaming rig.
Not OP but also searching for a thinkpad for the same purpose rn. I am also probably going to sell my desktop PC when I start university next
year too. This is why I'm thinking of getting a series P thinkpad. I don't plan to gayme on it, but I will use it for other heavy purposes for the
short while I won't have a desktop PC. Is getting a P series thinkpad a good idea?
Does a 100% battery charge last long enough and also does it make a lot of noise on idle?
What are some downsides of the P series and what do (You) use for university?
Get a chrome book
Do all your dev work in an amazon workspace and pay for hourly usage instead if monthly sustained usage.
You can keep your private stuff local on the chrome book and you'll have initial experience with cloud platforms
Plus your laptop will have a lot more battery life than running your tasks locally
Honestly you just need something that is light and easily transportable. You're not going to be doing any gaming on that shit, just writing documents, taking notes, and basic internet shit. Having a good separation between school and your hobbies is a good thing anyways.
i used an msi laptop and played league of legends in calculus, fans blasting
graduated last may
youll be ok anon, dont give into the iSharts
